How entry to Georgia works

Visa-free, e-visa or embassy visa

Most passports need no visa at all. Ninety-one nationalities, among them every EU country, the UK, the US, Canada and Australia, may stay a whole year, and eleven more get shorter stays through bilateral agreements, so a Chinese passport gives 30 days per trip and an Iranian one 45.

Thirty-two nationalities need a visa but can apply for it online at evisa.gov.ge. The remaining 60 apply at a Georgian embassy or consulate.

Insurance is now compulsory

From 1 January 2026, every foreign tourist must hold health and accident insurance for the entire trip, covering at least 30,000 GEL. The insurer can be Georgian or foreign, provided the policy is written in Georgian or English.

Diplomats, drivers of international lorries and coaches and a few other groups do not need it.

Another country's visa can count

If your passport needs a Georgian visa but you hold a valid US, UK, Canadian, Japanese or EU visa or residence permit, or one from another listed country, you can usually enter without a Georgian visa and stay 90 days within any 180-day period.

Seventeen nationalities can rely on a Gulf state's visa or permit only when that document is multiple-entry and still has twelve months or more to run on the day they cross the border.

Work and overstays

Since 1 March 2026, anyone employed or running a business in Georgia, remote work included, needs a work permit. The State Employment Support Agency issues it online for one year, tied to one job.

Staying beyond your allowance can now cost between 1,000 and 3,000 GEL in fines, and the authorities can bar you from coming back for anything between half a year and three years.

The background, border crossings and our advice are in the guide Georgia Visa and Entry Requirements 2026: Visa-Free Stays, Insurance and Borders.

Before you fly
  • Make sure your passport stays valid for every day of the stay. For an e-visa it must run at least three months past the visa and be less than ten years old.
  • Apply for an e-visa a week or more ahead: the portal needs five working days or more to decide, and the second identity check has to be finished within 24 hours of the first step.
  • Carry your insurance certificate on your phone and on paper, with cover from the day you land until the day you fly out.
  • Keep your accommodation booking and proof that you can pay for the trip to hand in case the border police ask for them.
  • EU and Swiss citizens may show a national ID card at the border in place of a passport.
  • These rules apply at the crossings Georgia controls. Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region are occupied territories, and nothing here covers entering them.

Visas for Georgia: FAQ

Which passports need a visa for Georgia?

Most visitors do not. As of October 2026, 102 nationalities can enter visa-free, 91 of them for a full year. Another 32 need a visa but can apply online through the e-visa portal, and 60 have to get one from a Georgian embassy or consulate. Pick your passport in the checker above for your exact rule.

How long can I stay visa-free in Georgia?

Up to a year if your passport is on Georgia's one-year list, which includes the EU countries, the UK, the US, Canada and Australia. A few nationalities get less under bilateral agreements: Chinese citizens 30 days per visit and no more than 90 days in any 180, Iranians 45 days, and most of the rest 90 days in any 180.

Is travel insurance mandatory for Georgia?

Yes. From 1 January 2026 onwards, each foreign tourist must carry a policy covering health and accidents for each day in Georgia, the days you arrive and leave included, insured for 30,000 GEL or more. Policies on paper or on screen are accepted in Georgian or English, from a Georgian or foreign company. Holders of diplomatic and service passports and some international drivers are exempt.

How do I apply for a Georgian e-visa and what does it cost?

Apply at evisa.gov.ge. In October 2026 the fee was 20 USD plus a 2% service charge, and a second verification step costing about 15 USD more had to be completed within a day. Allow at least five working days for the decision. Depending on your nationality you get one entry for up to 30 days or several entries for up to 90 days, and the e-visa cannot be extended once you are in Georgia.

Can I enter Georgia with a US, UK or EU visa?

If your own passport needs a Georgian visa, a valid visa or residence permit from the US, the UK, an EU state, Canada, Japan or another country on the official list usually lets you in without a Georgian visa for a total of 90 days in any 180-day period. It must still be valid on the day you cross. For 17 nationalities, a visa or permit from a Gulf state is accepted only when it allows several entries and lasts at least a year from the day you land.

What happens if I overstay in Georgia?

Since 1 October 2025, breaking the rules on how long foreigners may stay can bring a fine of 1,000 to 3,000 GEL and, depending on the case, a ban on entering the country for six months to three years. Count your days before you book the flight home.
