Mountain road and pass status

When the high roads to Tusheti, Khevsureti, Svaneti, Kazbegi and mountain Adjara usually open and close, what the newest Roads Department notice said about each one, and which vehicles may use them. We went through five years of official notices so you can plan around the season, then confirm on the morning you drive.

Not a live feed: check before you set off

Each card gives the newest official notice up to 19 Oct 2026, and we checked the list again on 22 Oct 2026. A pass can shut within hours for snow, rockfall or a landslide, so look at one of these on the day you travel:

Winter tyres and chains

Between the first of December and the first of March, police can turn back cars without winter tyres on the mountain sections that a government decree names, and in snow they can insist on chains. We have not been able to confirm which roads on this page that decree covers, so on any high road in those months, fit proper winter tyres and carry chains.

1 December to 1 March: what your tyres need

  • Snowflake symbol on the tyre.
  • Tread at least 3 mm for cars (M1) and trucks (N1, N2, N3); at least 4 mm for minibuses (M2) and buses (M3).
  • Tyre made no more than 10 years ago, with a readable date of manufacture.
  • Buses (M3) and trucks over 3.5 t (N2, N3) may use winter tyres without the snowflake, but police can then require chains on the drive axle.

Chains and fines

In winter, police may require anti-skid chains at least on the driven wheels, depending on the weather. Chains must be factory-made, fit the tyre size, and be used only on snow or ice.

Police may refuse entry to the listed section, or impound a vehicle that is a danger to others. Fine 100 GEL and 5 points off the licence (rule as published 22 Nov 2024).

Driving Georgia's mountain roads

How the notices work

The Roads Department posts a notice each time it shuts a stretch, limits it to certain vehicles or lets traffic through again. Every notice names the road and a kilometre range, which is why each card lists the sections, such as km 12–72 for the climb to Omalo.

The Georgian-language list is the complete one: plenty of entries from 2023 to 2025 never got an English version. Some reopenings are never posted at all, so a few years in our tables show no notice.

4x4 or ordinary car

Whenever the roads to Omalo and Shatili are open, the notices admit only high-clearance vehicles, meaning ones with at least two driven axles: in practice a 4x4. The Truso track is not on the official list, but it is a 4x4 road too.

The Jvari, Goderdzi, Gombori and Bakhmaro roads and the road from Mestia to Ushguli take ordinary cars when open. Zagari was for 4x4s only until 2025; since then the notices mention only trailers and big buses, which hints that cars may now cross, though no notice says so.

Rental cars

Rental terms often exclude the toughest roads. Localrent, a Georgian rental marketplace, does not let its cars go to Tusheti, Shatili, Juta or the Truso valley or over the Goderdzi Pass, and attaches conditions to the Svaneti roads.

We have not seen what other companies allow, so read your own contract before you plan a pass, or hire a car with a local driver for the mountain days.

Weather and timing

The high passes shut for winter at some point from October to December and reopen from late April to June, depending on the road and the year. An early snowfall can close a pass for a few days before the final closure.

On the Georgian Military Road the risk is avalanches between Gudauri and Kobi: each winter from 2021/22 to 2025/26 the pass was completely shut on 10 to 17 days. Rockfall and mudflows close roads in summer as well, though many are cleared the same day.

Words you will meet in the notices

High-clearance vehicle
Notices that allow only "high-clearance vehicles" define them as vehicles with two or more driven axles, in practice 4x4s.
Trailer bans
Trailer and semi-trailer bans do not affect ordinary cars.
M3 bus
M3 means passenger vehicles with more than 8 seats besides the driver and a total mass over 5 t.

Mountain roads in Georgia: FAQ

When is the road to Tusheti open?

In the 2022–2026 record, the Roads Department let 4x4s over the Abano Pass from some date between 25 May and 20 June and shut it for winter between 4 and 27 October: roughly four to five months a year, and only for high-clearance 4x4s. A spell of early snow can shut it for some days ahead of the winter closure, so check the official list before you leave Pshaveli.

Is the Georgian Military Road to Kazbegi open in winter?

Yes, the road is kept open through the year, yet the Gudauri to Kobi section across the Jvari Pass closes whenever avalanches threaten or a blizzard blows in. Over the five winters from 2021/22 that added up to 10 to 17 days of full closure a season, mostly from December to April, and trailers were banned far more often. Allow a buffer day if you fly out soon after.

Do I need a 4x4 for Georgia's mountain roads?

For Tusheti and Shatili, yes: when those roads open, the notices admit nothing without drive on at least two axles, and the Truso valley track needs one as well. An ordinary car will do over the Jvari, Goderdzi and Gombori passes, up to Bakhmaro and from Mestia to Ushguli, whenever they are open. On Zagari, this year's notices bar just trailers and big buses, yet never say that cars are welcome now.

Can I take a rental car to Tusheti, Shatili or Juta?

Not with Localrent, the Georgian rental marketplace we checked: its terms rule out Tusheti, Shatili, Juta, the Truso valley and the Goderdzi Pass, and it allows the Ushguli to Lentekhi road only with its own authorization in summer. We have not seen other companies' terms. Check your contract, or book a car with a local driver for those legs.

Are winter tyres compulsory in Georgia?

On some roads, yes. From 1 December to 1 March, police require winter tyres on mountain sections listed in a government decree: a car tyre must carry the snowflake mark, keep at least 3 mm of tread and be under 10 years old by its printed date. In snow they can also demand chains. The rule published in 2024 set a 100 GEL fine and 5 penalty points. Which roads the decree lists is not confirmed.

Where can I check whether a mountain road is closed today?

On the restriction list of the Roads Department of Georgia at georoad.gov.ge, which the department repeats on its Facebook page. The Georgian version is more complete than the English one. You can also call its hotline on +995 32 2 31 30 76, and in an emergency dial 112.
