Between Imereti and Racha rises a long, grassy range that few foreigners ever cross. In 2022 the Transcaucasian Trail team opened a route over it, from the village of Drbo near Sachkhere to Oni on the Rioni, roughly 51 km of shepherd paths, forest and open ridge with no guesthouses on the way. Its finest part is an airy stretch of high ground leading to the King Tamar Cliffs, a line of crags above the village of Shkmeri with views of the main Caucasus to the north. This trip turns that route into a supported three-day trek, with pack horses carrying tents, food and water and a cook in camp.

We first looked at a start from Okriba, near Tkibuli, but the realistic crossing to the King Tamar Cliffs begins on the Sachkhere side, so that is where the trek starts. Okriba and Shaori Lake come at the end instead, on the scenic road home over the Nakerala Pass. Before the trek you see the monk's chapel on the Katskhi Pillar and the old cable cars of Chiatura; after it, a full day in Racha with the carved churches of Nikortsminda and Barakoni and a tasting of semi-sweet Khvanchkara at a family cellar. Late spring and early autumn are best, when the ridge springs still run and the air is cool.

Highlights

  • Katskhi Pillar, a 40 m rock column with a church on top
  • The Soviet-era cable cars over the mining town of Chiatura
  • A ridge walk of about 10 km to the King Tamar Cliffs
  • Two nights camping on high pastures with horses and a cook
  • Nikortsminda cathedral's 11th-century stone carvings
  • Khvanchkara wine at a family cellar and the view over Shaori Lake

Day by day

01Katskhi Pillar, Chiatura and the road to SachkhereOvernight: Guesthouse near Sachkhere

Leave Tbilisi in the morning and drive west to Zestaponi, then north into the hills of upper Imereti. Your first stop is the Katskhi Pillar, a natural rock tower of some 40 m crowned by a tiny church, where a monk still lives part of the year; visitors watch from the foot. Continue to Chiatura, the manganese town in a deep gorge, and ride one of its cable cars across the valley. In the afternoon drive the short way to a guesthouse near Sachkhere and Drbo, where the horsemen load the bags and the guide briefs you over dinner.

02From Drbo up onto the ridgeOvernight: Tents on the high pastures

Start walking from Drbo, past the bridge to Speti and the last small shop on the route. A track climbs through hazel and oak, then beech forest, gaining height steadily. As the trees open you reach the first pastures, where cattle and horses graze in summer and herders spend the season in simple huts. Camp is set in a meadow just below the crest, with the cook working from a mess tent. There is no phone signal from here until the far side of the ridge.

03Along the crest to the King Tamar CliffsOvernight: Tents below the King Tamar Cliffs

The best day of the trek. The route follows the open ridge for about 10 km, unmarked and exposed in places, with steep drops on one side and long views north to the snowy Racha range. Your guide watches the sky closely: this section is not walked in storms, and there is a lower line through the forest if needed. In the afternoon you reach the King Tamar Cliffs, a band of grey crags above Shkmeri tied by local legend to the queen. Camp is on a pasture below them. The horses take a lower path on the exposed parts and meet you there.

04Down through Shkmeri and Korta to OniOvernight: Oni

A long descent into Racha. The path drops past the old church of Shkmeri and through hay meadows and orchards to Korta, then follows lanes down to the Rioni valley and Oni, the small market town of upper Racha. The horses finish here. Check into a guesthouse, shower, and sit down to Racha cooking: bean pie with smoked ham, shkmeruli chicken in garlic sauce and a first glass of local wine.

05Racha churches and Khvanchkara wineOvernight: Ambrolauri

A gentle day by car with short walks. In Oni look at the 19th-century synagogue, a reminder of the town's once large Jewish community. Downstream, Barakoni stands on a cliff above the meeting of two rivers, its walls covered in carved ornament. After lunch head to Nikortsminda, whose 11th-century facades carry some of the finest stone reliefs in Georgia. End the day at a family cellar in the Khvanchkara area, where the naturally semi-sweet red wine of the same name is made from Alexandrouli and Mujuretuli grapes. The night is in Ambrolauri.

06Shaori Lake, Nakerala and back to Tbilisi

The road home climbs south from Ambrolauri to the Nakerala Pass, where a viewpoint looks back over the whole Rioni valley and the mountains you crossed. Just beyond lies Shaori, a reservoir among pine and fir that is the largest lake in Racha. Then the road drops through Tkibuli and the Okriba hills to Kutaisi, where you have lunch. Then it is motorway all the way east, reaching the capital around dusk, or stay in Kutaisi if you fly out from there.

Good to know

Who it's for

  • Experienced hikers who want a new route with almost no other walkers
  • People who like wild camping but prefer horses to carry the weight
  • Wine lovers who want to finish a hard trek with Racha's own wine
  • Travellers looking for a shoulder-season trek when the high Caucasus is snowy

If you want Racha and Imereti without camping, our Racha & Imereti Off the Beaten Path covers the same region by car with short walks.

What to bring

  • A sleeping bag for cold nights near freezing on the ridge
  • Waterproofs and a warm layer; the ridge is windy
  • Two to three litres of water capacity per person
  • Trekking poles for the 1,500 m descent to Oni
  • Cash in lari; there are no ATMs between Sachkhere and Oni
Please note
  • The route is unmarked. The guide navigates by GPS, and the ridge section is only walked in settled weather.
  • There is no phone signal from Drbo until the cliffs above Shkmeri.
  • Oni has the nearest pharmacy and a small hospital.
  • Shovi, once a resort in upper Racha, was largely destroyed by a landslide in August 2023.

Questions about this tour

Is this an established trail?

It is a new long-distance route, mapped and published by the Transcaucasian Trail in 2022, but it is unmarked and largely unsigned. Our guides use their own GPS tracks and local horsemen who know the pastures.

Why does the trek start near Sachkhere and not in Okriba?

The King Tamar Cliffs sit on the ridge between Sachkhere and Oni. Starting there makes a natural three-day crossing. Okriba, near Tkibuli, lies on the road from Racha back to Kutaisi, so you still drive through it on the last day.

When is the water a problem?

The springs on the ridge often dry up by August. That is why we prefer late spring and autumn, and why the horses always carry water.

How exposed is the ridge?

Parts of the crest have steep drops on one side, but the path itself is a broad grassy strip. It is not suitable in storms or strong wind, and the guide uses a lower forest route if needed.

Can we stay longer in Racha?

Yes. Add a day for a forest walk in upper Racha above Oni, or a second winery visit around Ambrolauri.
