Georgian keyboard

Type in Georgian without installing anything. Spell words the way they sound in Latin letters, use the layout Georgians have on their own keyboards, or tap the letters below. Then copy the text into a message, a search or a map.

Esc: Georgian on or off

Spell it as it sounds: sh → შ, ch → ჩ, kh or x → ხ, gh → ღ, ts → ც, dz → ძ, zh → ჟ. An apostrophe gives the clipped sounds: k' → კ, t' → ტ, ts' → წ. Russian letters work too. Type + to keep two letters apart (s+h → სჰ).

Add a Georgian keyboard to your phone or computer

Phones and computers already include Georgian, so there is nothing to download. The steps follow each maker's own help pages.

iPhone and iPad

  1. Open Settings, then tap General and Keyboard.
  2. Tap Keyboards, then Add New Keyboard.
  3. Pick Georgian from the list.

To switch: tap the globe key at the bottom of the keyboard.

Android with Gboard

  1. Open Gboard's settings, from the keyboard's own menu or under Keyboard in your phone's Settings.
  2. Tap Languages, then Add keyboard.
  3. Pick Georgian (Mkhedruli), choose a layout and tap Done.

To switch: touch and hold the space bar and pick the language.

Windows 11 and 10

  1. Go to Start, Settings, Time & language, then Language & region (Language on Windows 10).
  2. Select Add a language, type Georgian and select Next.
  3. Leave "Set as my Windows display language" unticked, then select Install. Windows adds the Georgian (QWERTY) keyboard with it.

To switch: hold the Windows key and press the space bar.

Mac

  1. Choose the Apple menu, System Settings, then Keyboard.
  2. Under Text Input, click Edit, then the + button.

Typing Georgian: what to know

Two ways to type

By sound changes Latin spelling into Georgian as you go, so gamarjoba turns into გამარჯობა (gamarjoba) and a pair such as kh or sh becomes a single letter. It suits anyone who knows how a word sounds but not where the keys are.

The Georgian layout is the one most Georgians use on their computers. Most letters sit on the Latin key with a similar sound, and seven more need Shift. It is worth learning if you will type Georgian often.

Georgian in Latin letters

Before phones had Georgian keyboards, people texted Georgian in Latin letters, and you will still see it in chats and comments. It follows the keyboard: x for ხ (kh), w for წ (ts'), q for ქ (k), and capitals for the Shift letters.

Paste such a message here with Georgian layout selected and it turns back into Georgian script, ready to read below or to translate.

The lari sign ₾

The National Bank of Georgia presented the sign in July 2014: the letter ლ (l) with two lines through it. Computers gained it a year later, in Unicode 8.0.

On the Georgian layout it is Shift and L. Here there is a ₾ key on the bottom row.

Capital letters

Ordinary Georgian has no capitals. Mtavruli, the all-capitals form seen on signs and in headings, was added to the Unicode standard in 2018, so phones and computers from the last few years display it.

The Capitals button switches your text to Mtavruli and back. Check the result on the device that will show it, as an older one may display empty boxes.

Georgian keyboard: FAQ

How do I type in Georgian without a Georgian keyboard?

Type into the box near the top. Spell a word as it sounds in Latin letters, such as madloba, and it shows up as მადლობა. Or tap the letters on the on-screen keyboard, then copy the result into any app.

Which keyboard layout do Georgians use?

Most type on a layout built on QWERTY: ა is on A, ბ on B and so on, and seven letters sit on Shift. Windows calls it Georgian (QWERTY) and adds it by default with the Georgian language. Choose Georgian layout above to type with it.

How do I type თ, შ, ღ and the other Shift letters?

On the Georgian layout hold Shift: T gives თ, S შ, R ღ, C ჩ, Z ძ, W ჭ and J ჟ. Typing by sound needs no Shift: t gives თ, sh შ, gh ღ, ch ჩ, dz ძ, ch' ჭ and zh ჟ.

Can I type Georgian with Russian letters?

Yes. Each Russian letter becomes the Georgian letter with the same sound, so гамарджоба gives გამარჯობა. For the sounds Russian lacks, add an apostrophe (к' for კ, т' for ტ) or a hard sign (къ for ყ, гъ for ღ). The letter list on this page shows every one.

Where is the lari sign on a keyboard?

Shift and L on the Georgian (QWERTY) layout in Windows, and the ₾ key on our keyboard. If an app asks for a character code instead, it is U+20BE.

What does qartuli klaviatura mean?

It is Georgian for 'Georgian keyboard', written ქართული კლავიატურა. People search for it when they need to type Georgian on a new or borrowed device, and this page works for that too: choose Georgian layout and type as usual.

How can I read a Georgian text someone sent me?

Paste it into the box. The line under it shows how the text reads in Latin letters, or in Russian letters if you prefer, and the Translate button opens Google Translate with the text filled in.

Is what I type sent anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in your browser, and the text is kept only on your own device so it is still there when you come back. Clear removes it.
