How Georgian writes foreign names

By sound, not by spelling

Georgian has one letter for each sound, so a foreign name is written the way it is said. That is why Michael is მაიკლ (maik'l) in English but მიხაელ (mikhael) in German.

Silent letters drop out and double letters become single ones, so Hannah turns into ჰანა (hana).

The extra -i

A Georgian noun that ends in a consonant takes -i (ი (i)) in its basic form, and foreign names follow the rule: Shakespeare is შექსპირი (sheksp'iri) and Einstein is აინშტაინი (ainsht'aini).

Names that already end in a vowel, such as Anna, Sofia or Hugo, stay as they are.

Sounds Georgian does not have

There is no letter for f, w or the English th, so Georgian uses the nearest: ფ (p) for f, უ (u) or ვ (v) for w, and თ (t) for th, as in ფრედი (predi) for Freddie and უილიამ (uiliam) for William.

German ü, French u and Turkish ü become იუ (iu), and Russian ы becomes ი (i).

No capital letters

Mkhedruli, the script used every day, has no upper and lower case, so names are not capitalised. Headings and shop signs often use Mtavruli, an all-capitals style of the same letters, which you will find in your result next to the two older scripts.

Names in Georgian: FAQ

How do I write my name in Georgian?

Type it into the box at the top of this page and choose the language it comes from. The tool first looks in a list of more than 800 names as Georgian publications write them, and spells any other name by its sound, letter by letter.

Why does my name end in -i in Georgian?

Georgian adds -ი to nouns that end in a consonant, and names are nouns. John becomes ჯონი when people talk about him, and Isaac Newton is ისააკ ნიუტონი in Georgian books.

Does Georgian have capital letters?

Not in ordinary writing. Mtavruli, an all-capitals form of the same 33 letters, appears in headings, on signs and in logos, and the tool shows your name in it.

Is there one official Georgian spelling of my name?

No. Foreign names are written by ear, and newspapers sometimes disagree. Hotels, airlines and border guards use the Latin spelling in your passport, so you never need a Georgian one to travel.

Can I get my name in Georgian as a tattoo?

Many visitors do. Use the Mkhedruli result, copy the letters instead of redrawing them, and ask a Georgian speaker to check, above all when the tool says the spelling was made by sound.

What are the three Georgian scripts?

Asomtavruli, the rounded capitals of the oldest inscriptions from the 5th century; Nuskhuri, the angular hand of medieval church books; and Mkhedruli, in use since the 10th century and the everyday script today. All three share the same letters in the same order.
