Key takeaways
  • Racha is the upper Rioni valley in north-western Georgia: lower Racha around Ambrolauri (~550 m) has the carved churches and the vineyards, upper Racha around Oni (~830 m) the old Jewish town and the spas, and the highest villages, Ghebi, Chiora and Glola (~1,300 to 1,350 m), the trekking.
  • Ambrolauri is ~77 km from Kutaisi over the Nakerala Pass (1.5 to 2 hours) and ~265 km from Tbilisi (4.5 to 5 hours); minibuses run once or twice a day, and a small plane flies from Natakhtari near Tbilisi on clear days.
  • Visit from late May to October: July and August for the high trails and Udziro Lake, mid-October to early November for the harvest and the forest colour. The main valley road stays open in winter, but the upper villages are snowbound.
  • Two days cover Shaori Lake, Nikortsminda, Khvanchkara, Barakoni and Oni; allow three to five days for a night in the high villages or the two-day Udziro Lake trek.

Racha is the head of the Rioni valley in north-western Georgia, a green and thinly peopled corner of the Greater Caucasus about 4.5 hours by road from Tbilisi and under 2 hours from Kutaisi. This Racha travel guide covers what brings people here: the stone carving of Nikortsminda, family cellars pouring semi-sweet Khvanchkara, Shaori and the other lakes, the old Jewish quarter of Oni, and high villages such as Ghebi where the walking begins. It is a place for slow road trips and quiet treks rather than a checklist of famous sights.

Below you will find every way in, including the climb over the Nakerala Pass and the small plane to Ambrolauri, a guide to the seasons and to winter access, the sights of lower and upper Racha, tables of lakes and hikes, the food and wine, where to sleep, and plans for two, three and five days. We checked the facts in October 2026. Mountain roads, flights and guesthouses change often here, so confirm whatever your plans depend on shortly before you go.

Where is Racha, Georgia, and who is it for?

Racha is the upper course of the Rioni, closed to the north by the main Caucasus ridge on the Russian border and to the south by the Racha range. With Lechkhumi around Tsageri and Lower Svaneti around Lentekhi it forms the region of Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti, the least populated in the country at roughly 32,000 people. To the east lies the Java district of the Tskhinvali region (South Ossetia), which is occupied; there is no way through on that side.

Georgians split Racha into three steps of height. Lower Racha, around the regional capital Ambrolauri, is vine country at ~550 m, warm in summer and home to the finest churches. Upper Racha centres on Oni, ~28 km further up the valley, with its synagogue, museum and spa villages. Mountain Racha, which locals call Mtaracha, is the group of high villages below the glaciers: Ghebi, Chiora and Glola.

Is it worth the journey? Yes, if you have already seen Kazbegi and Kakheti, or you prefer carved stone, wine poured by its maker and empty trails to famous viewpoints. Expect few restaurants, no ski lifts and simple family guesthouses. With only two days for the mountains, Kazbegi is easier; with a week in the west, Racha fits neatly between Kutaisi and Svaneti.

How to get to Racha from Kutaisi and Tbilisi

Most visitors arrive over the Nakerala Pass from Kutaisi, but there are three other ways in.

RouteDistance and timeNotes
Kutaisi to Ambrolauri via Tkibuli and the Nakerala Pass~77 km, 1.5 to 2 hShortest and most scenic; passes Shaori Lake and Nikortsminda
Tbilisi to Ambrolauri via Zestaponi, Terjola and Tkibuli~265 km, 4.5 to 5 hLeave the highway near Zestaponi; no need to enter Kutaisi
Kutaisi to Ambrolauri up the Rioni through Lechkhumi~90 km, 2 to 2.5 hLower and slower, by Tvishi and Alpana; a good way back
Tbilisi to Oni via Sachkhere and Shkmeri~230 km, 4.5 h or moreBypasses Ambrolauri; closes after heavy snow, so ask first
Minibus from Kutaisi2 to 3 hAmbrolauri at 11:00 and 16:00, about 15 GEL ($6); Oni at 16:00, about 20 GEL ($8), in 2026
Minibus from Tbilisi (Didube)5 to 6 hOne or two a day, in the morning or early afternoon, about 25 to 30 GEL ($10 to $12)
Flight from Natakhtariabout 30 minSmall plane to Ambrolauri on set days, only in good visibility

The Nakerala Pass road

From Kutaisi the road runs north to the coal-mining town of Tkibuli and its reservoir, then zigzags up limestone cliffs 300 to 600 m tall to the Nakerala Pass at 1,217 m. Beyond it a karst plateau opens out, with Shaori Lake at the roadside and Nikortsminda a few kilometres on. On the Imereti side of the pass rises Tskhrajvari, the Nine Crosses summit at 1,569 m, with a wide view over lower Racha and a pilgrims' festival on the last Saturday of May.

In by the pass, out by the riverDrive in over the Nakerala Pass and leave down the Rioni gorge through Lechkhumi. You see both faces of the region, and you can stop in Tvishi for a glass of its semi-sweet white on the way back to Kutaisi.

Flying to Ambrolauri

Ambrolauri airport opened in January 2017 for planes of 15 to 20 seats. Vanilla Sky still lists the route in its 2026 booking system, flying from Natakhtari airfield, ~23 km north of Tbilisi, and the official tourism site names Friday and Sunday as flying days. Flights run only under visual flight rules, so low cloud cancels them at short notice, with a refund. Baggage is capped at 15 kg, and a free shuttle leaves central Tbilisi two hours before take-off. Keep a road plan for the return.

Best time to visit Racha, and what winter means for access

Ambrolauri sits low for a mountain town, so its summer is hotter than visitors expect: July and August afternoons average about 30°C, with nights near 17°C. Climb to Shaori or Ghebi and the air turns fresh, which is why Georgian families head for Utsera and the upper valley in August. January days in the main valley reach 5 to 6°C, with nights a few degrees below zero, and October is the wettest month, with about 116 mm of rain.

Racha in winter

The valley road from Kutaisi through Ambrolauri to Oni is kept open all year. Heavy snow can shut the Nakerala Pass and the Sachkhere road for hours or a day, and the lower road up the Rioni through Lechkhumi is then the usual way round. Above Oni, avalanches closed the road towards Shovi and the high villages in February 2023 and February 2024, and it was shut at night during avalanche danger in March 2023. Ghebi, Chiora and Glola can be snowbound for weeks.

Winter suits cellar visits around Ambrolauri, Shaori white and silent, and snowshoe walks or ski touring near Oni and Ghebi with a local guide. Check the road status on the morning you travel and leave a spare day.

Hot valley, cool hillsIn July and August, sleep high. A guesthouse in Oni, Utsera or Ghebi is far more comfortable than one in Ambrolauri, and the churches and cellars of lower Racha are still within an hour's drive.

Things to do around Ambrolauri: churches, wine and the town

Lower Racha keeps its best sights inside a small triangle that a car covers in half a day. Here they are in the order you meet them coming from Kutaisi.

  1. Nikortsminda Cathedral
Raised between 1010 and 1014 under Bagrat III, it is one of the most richly carved buildings in the country. Walk right round the outside first: tall blind arcades frame the Transfiguration, the Last Judgment, the warrior saints George and Theodore and a crowd of real and mythical animals. It lies ~15 km south of Ambrolauri and is on Georgia's tentative list for UNESCO.
  2. Khvanchkara
The village ~13 km west of Ambrolauri, on slopes above the Rioni, that named Georgia's most famous semi-sweet red. Family cellars pour tastings with ham and bean bread; ask your guesthouse to book, as most producers are small, and leave the car keys with a driver, since a cellar visit rarely ends after one glass.
  3. Ambrolauri town
A quiet town of about 2,000 people on both banks of the Rioni, with the Machabeli tower, a giant wine-bottle monument to Khvanchkara and a Museum of Fine Arts holding around 550 works by 20th-century Georgian painters.
  4. Barakoni Church
About 6 km from Ambrolauri, above the village of Tsesi, on a cliff where the Lukhuni meets the Rioni. Rostom, duke of Racha, had it built in 1753, and the architect Avtandil Shulavreli signed his name on the east facade. Carved ornament frames its windows and doors, and the ruined towers of Minda fortress stand nearby. The carving reads best in the slanting light of late afternoon.

Lakes in Racha: Shaori, Tkibuli, Udziro and the high tarns

Racha is no lake district, but it has one large roadside reservoir, one celebrated high tarn and a few remote lakes that only trekkers reach.

LakeHeightWhat it isHow to get there

Sasvano lakesHigh mountainSmall lakes on the wild crossing towards Lower SvanetiExpedition route with a guide; border-zone rules may apply
Kulbaki lakes and Lajana reservoirVariesSmaller lakes in Lechkhumi, to the westBy road towards Tsageri; ask locally

Shaori was flooded in the 1950s as the top step of the Shaori and Tkibuli hydropower chain, whose station began work in 1955. Kharistvala, the settlement built for the dam crews on its western shore, still has town status but no permanent residents. Meadows and mixed forest ring the water: cool and breezy in summer, gold and red in late October, often frozen in winter. Bring a picnic, and ask locally before you swim.

Udziro, a name that means 'bottomless', is the lake hikers come for. The usual route leaves Glola through forest and follows a shadeless grassy ridge to the basin, ~11 km and ~1,550 m of climbing, for a night in a tent by the shore. The season runs from mid-July to early September. Our Udziro Lake Trek page has the stages, water points and gear list.

Oni, Utsera and Shovi: upper Racha

Oni is the market town of upper Racha, ~28 km up the valley from Ambrolauri at ~830 m. Its landmark is the synagogue of 1895, a tall stone hall from the decades when Jews made up a large share of the town. Most of the community left for Israel around the end of the Soviet era; a few families still keep the key, so ask at the houses nearby if it is locked. The Racha regional museum, with around 14,000 objects from Bronze Age finds to costume and manuscripts, is a short walk away. Oni also has the only pharmacies in upper Racha, so stock up here.

Utsera, ~11 km further on at ~1,050 m, is a small spa that grew up in Soviet times among fir forest. Several carbonated springs rise near the river, each with its own taste; fill a bottle at the pavilions, walk the riverside paths and sleep cool in July. Book ahead for August, when Georgian families take most rooms.

Shovi, ~30 km beyond Oni at ~1,500 m, was for almost a century Racha's favourite mountain resort. On 3 August 2023 a glacier collapse above the Buba valley sent a mudflow through it, killing 32 people; one more was never found. Most of the resort has stayed closed since, and in October 2026 we found no confirmed plan to reopen it. You can still drive up the valley to Glola, but keep off closed ground and debris, and remember that many Georgian families lost relatives here.

Above Shovi the Ossetian Military Road, laid out in the 19th century, climbs towards the Mamisoni Pass at ~2,900 m on the Russian border, where there is no crossing. Local drivers run some summer jeep trips towards glacier viewpoints; ask the border police and people in Oni what is allowed before going beyond Shovi.

Ghebi, Chiora and Glola: the high villages of Mtaracha

At the head of the Rioni, where the valley narrows under the main ridge, three villages form Mtaracha. Ghebi, the largest, stands at ~1,350 m, ~30 km north of Oni: a few hundred year-round residents, wooden balconies, small medieval churches and hay meadows running up to the forest. Digs at its Brili burial ground found Bronze Age and early Iron Age metalwork linked to cultures on both sides of the Caucasus. Chiora, ten minutes down the valley, is smaller and quieter, and Glola, ~25 km from Oni on the branch towards Shovi, is the trailhead for Udziro.

Up here, walking is the point. Paths climb from Ghebi into side valleys towards summer pastures, the shepherds' huts at Lagora and viewpoints over the Shoda and Kedela peaks, which rise to ~3,300 to 3,600 m. Hosts can find a horse for your luggage, and in summer families sell fresh cheese and smoked ham at the gate. Rough jeep tracks go on to the village of Gona and into the Notsara valley; hire a local driver for those rather than risking a rental car.

Before you drive upThere is no cash machine above Oni and phone signal is patchy. Take enough lari for beds, meals and drivers, ask in Oni whether the road and bridges are clear after storms, and pack warm layers, because nights at 1,350 m are cool even in August.

Best hikes in Racha

Racha has some of the emptiest trails in the Georgian Caucasus; on a summer day you are more likely to meet shepherds than other hikers. Paths are rarely waymarked, so load an offline map, and take a guide for anything above the treeline.

Imereti to Racha ridgeDrbo, near Sachkhere~51 km to Oni, +~2,540 m3 days campingHardLate May into early July, or September until mid-October

The Imereti to Racha ridge is the newest long route here: an unmarked line of shepherd paths and open crest from Drbo, near Sachkhere, past the grey King Tamar Cliffs above Shkmeri and down to Oni. There are no guesthouses on the way and the ridge springs dry up by August, so we run it with pack horses, tents and a cook, and finish with a night in Oni and a Khvanchkara tasting.

In winter the same valleys suit snowshoe walks from Oni and ski touring around Ghebi, always with a local guide. For a wider comparison, our guide to hiking in Georgia sets Racha beside Kazbegi, Svaneti and Tusheti.

Border zoneThe upper Rioni runs up to the Russian border. Carry your passport on every hike, stay on known routes, and arrange a border-zone permit before any crossing towards Lower Svaneti by way of Zeskho.

Khvanchkara wine, Racha ham and what to eat

Khvanchkara is a red blended from two local grapes, Aleksandrouli and Mujuretuli, grown only in a small protected zone around the village that bears the name. Cool hills and a harvest that often runs into late October leave plenty of sugar in the grapes, and fermentation is halted before it has used it all, so the wine comes out naturally semi-sweet, ruby and soft, with a taste of raspberry. Output is tiny and the label popular, so buy from the families who grow it. Lechkhumi next door adds Tvishi, a semi-sweet white, and the scarce red Usakhelouri.

Most tastings take place in family cellars in Khvanchkara and the villages around it, often at the kitchen table. A few bigger wineries near Ambrolauri have tasting rooms and guest rooms. In autumn the Racha-Lechkhumi Wine Festival gathers the region's producers in one square; its date and host town change from year to year.

Money, health and phones

  • Ambrolauri and Oni have cash machines; above Oni, and in most guesthouses, you pay in lari cash.
  • There are hospitals in Ambrolauri and Oni, and Oni has the only pharmacies in upper Racha. Call 112 in an emergency.
  • Magti usually has the best village coverage; expect gaps on high routes.
  • Churches are working places of worship: wear clothes that hide shoulders and knees, and women will need a headscarf and a skirt.
  • Book ahead for August, when Georgian families fill Utsera and Oni, and for the October harvest.
  • In summer an ordinary car manages the paved valley roads to Ambrolauri, Oni, Utsera and Glola. Gona, Notsara and the tracks above Shovi call for a 4x4 and a local driver, and from December to March the car needs winter tyres.

Racha itinerary: 2, 3 and 5 days

These plans start and finish in Kutaisi. From Tbilisi add half a day at each end, or in summer come in by the Sachkhere road and leave over the Nakerala Pass to make a loop.

  1. 2 days: the essentials
Day 1: over the Nakerala Pass to Shaori Lake and Nikortsminda, lunch in Ambrolauri, a tasting in Khvanchkara and Barakoni in the late light; sleep in Ambrolauri. Day 2: Oni's synagogue and museum, the springs at Utsera, then down the Rioni gorge through Lechkhumi, stopping at Tvishi, to Kutaisi by evening.
  2. 3 days: add the high villages
Follow day 1 above, spend day 2 in Oni and Utsera and sleep there, then drive up to Ghebi and Chiora on day 3 for a half-day walk through the hay meadows before heading out.
  3. 5 days: hiking Racha
Day 1: Kutaisi to Ambrolauri with Shaori, Nikortsminda and Barakoni. Day 2: a Khvanchkara tasting, Oni, and on to a guesthouse in Glola. Days 3 and 4: the Udziro trek with a night at the lake. Day 5: back down the valley and out to Kutaisi or Tbilisi.
  4. A week in western Georgia
Add two or three days here to Kutaisi's monasteries and canyons, then cross to Svaneti in summer by the 4x4 road over the Zagari Pass from Lentekhi to Ushguli.

Prefer it arranged? Our five-day private tour pairs Gelati, the Katskhi Pillar, Chiatura and Okatse Canyon with Nikortsminda, a Khvanchkara tasting, Barakoni and Oni. Being private, it runs on any date for any group size, led by a guide who speaks your language.

Racha FAQ

Is Racha worth visiting?

Yes, for quiet valleys, carved medieval churches and wine bought from its makers. Nikortsminda and Barakoni are two of the best-carved churches in western Georgia, and the upper valley has near-empty trails. It is less dramatic than Svaneti or Kazbegi, and beds are simpler.

How many days do you need in Racha?

Two days are enough for the main sights: Nikortsminda, Barakoni, Shaori Lake, a Khvanchkara cellar and Oni. Three let you add a night in the high villages around Ghebi, and five leave time for the two-day trek to Udziro Lake.

How do I get from Tbilisi to Racha?

Drive ~265 km via Zestaponi, Tkibuli and the Nakerala Pass to Ambrolauri, about 4.5 to 5 hours, or take a minibus from Didube (5 to 6 hours). Small planes also fly from Natakhtari to Ambrolauri on set days in clear weather.

Are there flights to Ambrolauri?

Yes. Vanilla Sky lists the Natakhtari to Ambrolauri route in 2026, usually on Fridays and Sundays, and the flight takes about 30 minutes. It flies only in good visibility, so keep a road option.

What are the best lakes in Racha?

Shaori, the large reservoir beside the Nakerala road, is the easy one. Udziro, a high tarn at ~2,800 m, is the hikers' prize and needs two days from Glola. The Sasvano and Kulbaki lakes are remote and best visited with a guide.

Can you visit Racha in winter?

Yes. The main road to Ambrolauri and Oni stays open, though the Nakerala Pass can close for some hours after heavy snow. The high villages are snowbound, so winter trips centre on wine, food and guided snowshoe walks.

Is Shovi open after the 2023 landslide?

Most of the resort has been closed since the mudflow of 3 August 2023, which killed 32 people and left one missing. Check the current situation in Oni, and respect closed areas and memorials.

Is Khvanchkara wine sweet?

It is semi-sweet, not a dessert wine. Fermentation stops early and leaves natural grape sugar, so it tastes soft and fruity. Serve it slightly cool with ham, cheese or fruit.
