Svaneti Hiking Week
Seven days of day hikes in Upper Svaneti from comfortable bases in Mestia, Mazeri and Ushguli, climbing to the Koruldi lakes, walking under Ushba and Shkhara and crossing the Guli Pass, with a car to move your bags.
KutaisiPhoto: Kober, CC BY-SA 3.0Upper Svaneti is best known for the village-to-village trek from Mestia to Ushguli, but some of its finest walking lies just off that line. Above Mestia the Koruldi lakes reflect Ushba's twin horns. In the Becho valley a short, rough path climbs to the foot of the Ushba glacier. The Guli Pass, close to 2,950 m, links Mazeri to Mestia in one long, grand day. And at Ushguli the valley floor leads straight to the ice of Shkhara, Georgia's highest mountain. This week strings those walks together while you sleep in hotels and guesthouses with hot water and Svan cooking.
You start and finish in Kutaisi, the closest airport to Svaneti. A driver handles every transfer and moves your luggage, so you walk with a light day pack. The difficulty rises and falls through the week: a long warm-up to Koruldi, a moderate glacier walk at Mazeri, one hard day over the Guli Pass and two easier days near Mestia and Ushguli. If the pass day sounds too much, your guide offers a gentler alternative on the Hatsvali and Zuruldi ridge instead, so mixed-ability parties can travel together.

Day by day
01Kutaisi to Mestia by the Enguri gorgeOvernight: Mestia
Your driver meets you in the morning at Kutaisi airport or your hotel and heads west to Zugdidi, then north into the Enguri gorge. Past the great concrete arch of the Enguri dam, the road follows the river into the mountains. The last two hours are a slow, scenic climb with waterfalls on the cliffs and the first Svan towers in the villages. You reach Mestia in the late afternoon. Stretch your legs on a walk through the old quarter, where the 12th-century defensive towers stand between the houses.
02Up to the Koruldi lakesOvernight: Mestia
A 4x4 drives the rough track above Mestia to the large cross on the ridge, which saves most of the forest climb. From there you walk up open slopes to a plateau with a group of small glacial lakes at about 2,850 m. On a calm morning Ushba and the Tetnuldi ridge appear upside down in the water. Have lunch at the lakes, then walk all the way back down to Mestia on a path that zigzags through meadows and pine forest. The descent is long, so take poles.
03Mazeri and the Ushba glacierOvernight: Mazeri
Drive west to the Becho valley and Mazeri, a scatter of farms below Ushba's south face. Walk up the valley to the Shdugra waterfall, a long ribbon falling off the cliff, then on a steeper, rocky path to a viewpoint below the broken icefall of the Ushba glacier. The final part is a scramble over boulders, and your guide judges how far to go. Back in Mazeri the evening is quiet, with dinner in your guesthouse and the mountain lit pink above the trees if the sky is clear.
04Over the Guli Pass to MestiaOvernight: Mestia
The hardest and most rewarding day of the week. Leave early and climb through forest and then steep meadows to the Guli Pass at nearly 2,950 m, where the whole Ushba massif fills the view to the north. The descent to Mestia passes high pastures and the upper Koruldi slopes before dropping back into the forest. Your bags go to Mestia by car. If you prefer a shorter day, drive back to Mestia instead and ride the chairlift to Hatsvali for a ridge walk towards Zuruldi with similar views and about half the effort.
05Chalaadi glacier, then the road to UshguliOvernight: Ushguli
After a slower start, drive a few minutes out of Mestia to the bridge over the Mestiachala and walk upstream through beech and birch woods. The path is broad and gently rising, with a short boulder section at the end below the tongue of the Chalaadi glacier. Be back in Mestia for lunch and a visit to the Svaneti Museum, which keeps icons and manuscripts once guarded in village churches. In the afternoon take the paved road to Ushguli, about two hours away, for two nights at the top of the Enguri valley.
06To the Shkhara glacierOvernight: Ushguli
Walk out of Ushguli up the wide valley of the young Enguri, with the 5,000 m wall of Shkhara ahead the whole time. The path is mostly level, crossing meadows and stony river flats, and climbs only near the end to the snout of the glacier, where the river pours out of an ice cave in some summers. Return the same way and finish the afternoon at Lamaria, the small church on the hill above Zhibiani, before a last dinner of kubdari and tashmijabi in the guesthouse.
07Back to Kutaisi
The usual route back runs via Mestia and down the Enguri to Zugdidi and Kutaisi, a full day in the car with a lunch stop. In midsummer, when it is open, the shorter gravel road over the Zagaro Pass to Lentekhi and Tsageri is an alternative, rougher but very scenic. Either way you reach Kutaisi in the evening, and we can continue to Tbilisi or drop you at Kutaisi airport for a late flight.

Good to know
Who it's for
- Strong walkers who want Svaneti's glaciers and passes without a multi-day point-to-point trek
- Parties with mixed fitness, since the hardest day has an easier alternative
- Hikers who like a proper bed, a shower and Svan home cooking every night
- Photographers chasing reflections of Ushba and close views of Shkhara
If you would rather walk village to village with your bag sent ahead, the Svaneti Trek: Mestia to Ushguli is the classic choice.
What to bring
- Sturdy hiking boots; the Ushba glacier path and the Guli Pass are rocky
- Trekking poles for the long descents to Mestia
- A waterproof shell and a warm fleece, as weather on the passes changes quickly
- A day pack of 25-30 litres and capacity for two litres of water
- Cash in lari for Ushguli, where card payment is rare
- Sun protection: the light above 2,500 m is strong
- Weather in Svaneti changes fast. The guide may swap days 2, 3 and 5 to use the best forecast for the high walks.
- The Guli Pass day is long. Walkers who are slower than about 300 m of climb an hour should choose the alternative.
- Mestia has ATMs and pharmacies; Ushguli has neither.
- Drives on the Mestia road are slow because of bends and roadworks; plan your flight home for the evening or the next day.

Questions about this tour
How is this different from the Mestia to Ushguli trek?
The classic trek walks from village to village in one direction. This week uses bases and a car, so you hike different side valleys and passes each day and sleep in better rooms. It suits people who want big glacier scenery without four consecutive trekking days.
Is the Guli Pass day compulsory?
No. It is the one hard day, about 9 to 10 hours. Anyone can switch to the shorter Hatsvali ridge walk, and the group meets again in Mestia in the evening.
Can we fly to Mestia instead?
Small planes fly from Tbilisi and Kutaisi to Mestia in good weather, but they are often cancelled. We prefer the road and can book a flight for you if you accept the risk.
When is the best time?
July to mid-September for the high walks. In late June snow may still lie on the Guli Pass and around Koruldi, and we adjust the plan.
Do I need a permit?
Not for these walks. Carry your passport anyway, as Svaneti is near the border and police occasionally check documents.
