Koruldi Lakes

Small alpine lakes at about 2,740 m above Mestia, reached by a steep day hike or by 4x4, with reflections of Ushba.

Koruldi Lakes

The Koruldi Lakes are a group of small glacial lakes on the high plateau north of Mestia, at about 2,740 m. They are not large or deep, but on a still morning they reflect Ushba and the ridges of the main Caucasus. The hike is one of the most popular in Svaneti: about 7 km each way from the centre of Mestia, with more than 1,300 m of climbing. The first steep section leads to the Mestia Cross, a viewpoint at about 2,170 m with a small cafe, and the path then continues more gently across open alpine meadows.

Allow 7.5 to 10 hours for the round trip on foot. Many visitors save time by hiring a 4x4 to the cross or all the way to the lakes and walking only part of the route. There is little shade above the treeline and few water sources, so carry plenty of water and sun protection. The lake water is murky and not suitable for drinking. Snow often lingers into June, and the most reliable months are July to September.

What to see and do

  • Reflections of Ushba in the lakes
  • The Mestia Cross viewpoint over town
  • Alpine meadows with views of Tetnuldi and Shkhara
  • Option to drive part of the way by 4x4

How to visit

Getting there

The trail starts in central Mestia, about 7 km and 1,300 m below the lakes. Drivers in Mestia offer 4x4 return trips up the rough track.

When to go

July to September. Plan 7.5–10 hours on foot; about 4 hours by 4x4 here.

Local tips
  • Start early to beat afternoon cloud and the heat on the open climb.
  • Carry at least 1 to 2 litres of water; the cafe near the cross is the only reliable refill.
  • Take a warm layer and a rain jacket, as weather on the plateau changes fast.
  • Do not drink the lake water.
