Chalaadi Glacier Walk

Svaneti's easiest glacier walk: about 3 km each way through birch and pine from a footbridge north of Mestia to a viewpoint below the stony snout of the Chalaadi Glacier, roughly 300 m of ascent and 2 to 3 hours return.

The Chalaadi Glacier pours down from the massif of Ushba and Chatini into a side valley of the Mestiachala, a short drive north of Mestia. Its lower tongue is covered in rubble and has retreated far up the valley in recent decades, but the walk to it is one of the nicest short outings in Upper Svaneti: a suspension bridge, a shaded path through old forest and then open moraine with ice cliffs and waterfalls ahead.

It is graded 1, the easiest level on our scale, and suits families and anyone who wants a rest day between bigger hikes. The only steep moments come near the end, where the path climbs over boulders and moraine. It is also the best choice in Svaneti when cloud or rain rules out the high routes.

Highlights

  • Suspension bridge over the Mestiachala
  • Old-growth forest along the Chalaadi stream
  • Close view of a Caucasus glacier tongue and its icefalls
  • Short and easy enough for a half day or a rest day

Cross the river on the swaying footbridge and turn up the left bank of the Chalaadi stream. The path is wide and gently graded, winding through birch, pine and alder with the meltwater roaring beside you. Small wooden bridges cross the side streams.

The trees thin out and the path climbs onto the moraine, picking its way over large boulders marked with occasional paint. Stop on the rocks with a clear view of the snout and the ice falls above. Keep well back from the face: blocks of ice and stones drop from it without warning, and the meltwater channel can shift.

Retrace the same path. Take care on the boulders immediately below the viewpoint, which are slick when wet.

Practical information

Getting there

Take a taxi from central Mestia past the airport to the end of the road at the Mestiachala footbridge, about 9 km and 20 minutes: around 30 to 50 GEL (about $11 to $19) per car each way in 2026, or 70 to 90 GEL (about $26 to $33) for a return trip with the driver waiting. Walking the gravel road from town instead adds roughly 2 to 2.5 hours each way.

Getting back

Return to the bridge by the same path. If you did not book your driver to wait, ask in Mestia for a pick-up time before you leave, because cars are rarely passing for a lift back.

Water

The Chalaadi stream runs beside the path, but it is grey with glacial silt and not pleasant to drink even filtered. Bring 1 litre per person from Mestia; a small seasonal cafe near the bridge sometimes sells drinks in summer.

Phone signal

Patchy. Expect a signal at the bridge and near the road, little or none in the forest further up the side valley.

Nearest help

Dial 112. Mestia's hospital is about 20 minutes by car from the bridge. The trail is short enough that a walker with a twisted ankle can usually be helped back to the road.

Permits

None, and no entry fee for the trail. Take your passport, as on any walk in the upper valleys.

Gear and safety

What to bring

  • Trainers with a good sole are enough in dry weather; light boots after rain
  • Warm layer: cold air flows down off the ice even in August
  • Rain jacket
  • 1 litre of water and a snack

Stay safe

  • Do not walk onto the ice or stand directly below the glacier front: rockfall and collapsing seracs are common.
  • After heavy rain the side streams can flood the path; turn back rather than wade.
  • The bridge is narrow and slippery when wet; cross one or two at a time.
Shorter, longer and bad-weather options
  • Walk from Mestia: about 23 km return on the gravel road and trail, 6 hours, still easy but long.
  • Combine with a visit to the Svaneti Museum in Mestia in the afternoon for a gentle full day.
  • If you want a bigger day the same weekend, add the Koruldi Lakes, which look straight down this valley.

Emergency number in Georgia: 112. Tell your guesthouse your plan before you set off.
