Didgoroba (Battle of Didgori Day)
A commemoration of King David the Builder's 1121 victory at Didgori, held at the battlefield memorial of giant swords.
The Battle of Didgori in 1121, when David IV defeated a much larger Seljuk army, opened Georgia's medieval golden age. Each August a ceremony at the memorial, a ring of huge stone swords on the open hills west of Tbilisi, brings together re-enactors, church services and folk music.
The memorial is about an hour from Tbilisi by car on a rough last stretch, and the high meadows are pleasant in summer.
- Bring water and sun protection; there is no shade on the hilltop.
- A car or taxi is the only practical way to reach the site.
