Batumi is the place for a scooter. The seafront boulevard, the Botanical Garden at Mtsvane Kontskhi and the beaches down to Gonio and Sarpi are all an easy ride away, and parking is never a problem. In Tbilisi a scooter suits confident riders for short hops in spring and autumn.

Rental firms ask for a licence that covers the machine: category AM for a 50cc moped, A1 or higher for a 125cc. Riding without the right category can also void your travel insurance. Helmets come with every scooter and must be worn.
For a 50cc moped, firms usually want category AM; for anything up to 125cc, category A1 or a full A licence. A few accept a car licence for the smallest mopeds, but check that your travel insurance still covers you.
Roughly $13 to $17 a day in spring and autumn and about twice that in July and August, with discounts for a week or more.
Traffic is fast and drivers change lanes freely, so only experienced riders should try. For sightseeing, the metro, Bolt and walking are easier.
