Green Lake (Mtsvane Tba)
An emerald mountain lake at about 2,060 m in Upper Adjara, ringed by conifer and beech forest, 5 km north of Goderdzi.
Green Lake, Mtsvane Tba in Georgian, lies at about 2,060 m in the Arsiani range, roughly 5 km north of the Goderdzi ski area in Khulo municipality. It is a small lake, up to about 19 m deep, fed by snowmelt, rain and cold springs, and its green colour comes from the conifer and beech forest reflected in its clear water. On summer weekends families from the valleys come up to picnic, and shepherds spend the summer with their herds on the high pastures around it.
You can reach it on foot or with a high-clearance vehicle on a rough forest track. The water is very cold, so most people come to walk, picnic and camp rather than swim, though boats and pedal boats are sometimes for hire in summer. Combine the lake with walks to the nearby Black Lakes or a night in the summer village of Beshumi, and bring your own food, as there are no cafes.
What to see and do

How to visit
Getting there
Green Lake is about 5 km north of the Goderdzi resort and about 15 km east of Khulo, both as the crow flies. The last section is a rough dirt track for walkers or high-clearance vehicles; ask in Khulo or at Goderdzi about 4x4 transport.
When to go
June to early October, when the track is free of snow. Plan half a day here.
- The water stays cold even in August; swimming is for the hardy.
- Bring food, water and a warm layer; there are no services at the lake.
- After rain the track gets very muddy, so use a 4x4.
- In winter, guided ski tours from Goderdzi go up to the plateau around the lake.
