Argo Cable Car

Gondola line of 2,586 m from central Batumi to Anuria hill, about 250 m up, with terraces over the port, city and sea.

Argo Cable Car

The Argo cable car is the quickest way to see Batumi from above. Eight-seat gondolas leave from a station on Gogebashvili Street, close to the port and within walking distance of the old town, and climb 2,586 m to the top of Anuria hill, about 250 m above the sea. The ride takes around 15 minutes each way, rising over the edge of the city and the green slopes behind it. Its name recalls the Argo, the ship of Jason and his crew, whose legend is tied to this stretch of the old Colchian coast.

At the top station you find viewing terraces, cafes, shops and a restaurant serving Georgian dishes, with the curve of the coast spread out below. On clear days the view runs from the harbour and the towers of the New Boulevard to the mountains inland. Many people time the ride for late afternoon, so they can watch the sun sink into the Black Sea and then see the city lights come on. In summer the complex also stages evening folk song and dance, and wine tastings are offered at the top.

What to see and do

  • A 15-minute ride over the city in eight-seat gondolas

  • Sunset over the Black Sea and the lit-up skyline
  • Restaurant and cafes at the top station
  • Summer evenings of Georgian folk song and dance

How to visit

Getting there

The lower station is on Gogebashvili Street near Batumi port, an easy walk from the old town. Batumi is about 370 km (5 to 6 hours) from Tbilisi by road or train.

When to go

All year; clear evenings for the sunset. Plan 1–2 hours here.

Local tips
  • Check the weather first, as low cloud can hide the view completely
  • Summer evenings bring queues, so arrive a little before sunset
  • Take a jacket: it is breezier at the top than in town
  • Combine the ride with an evening walk in the old town or on the boulevard
