Lisi Lake

Lisi Lake sits on the north-western edge of Tbilisi, a natural lake ringed by a ~3 km path for walks, runs, bikes and summer swims.

Lisi Lake is a natural lake on the open hills above Saburtalo, in the north-west of Tbilisi, and one of the places locals go when they want air and space without leaving the city. The water spreads over ~0.47 sq km but is shallow, nowhere deeper than ~4 m, and its surface lies at ~624 m, a good deal higher than the streets of the centre. Planted pines shade part of the shore, while the rest is grassy slope and dry steppe, with the forested ridge behind the old town on the skyline. Treat it as a city park built around a lake rather than a wild spot.

The main thing people do here is go round. A lit, paved loop of ~3 km follows the shore, with marker posts every 500 m that runners use for pacing and a separate lane for bikes and scooters. From late spring to autumn you can hire a catamaran or rowing boat at the jetty, or lie on the small beach on the southern shore and cool off in the water in summer, while anglers cast from the banks. Children have playgrounds and an outdoor gym, and a cluster of cafes near the main entrance serves food and cold drinks.

History

The lake fills a natural hollow and is fed by rain, snowmelt and groundwater, which leaves it slightly brackish. Until the 1930s villagers used it to water their fields and grazed animals on the slopes. Boating started in 1936, and from 1937 the banks were landscaped as a leisure area, with some 1,400 trees and shrubs put in. Before the Tbilisi Sea reservoir was filled in the 1950s, no larger body of water lay near the city. In 2007 most of the surrounding land passed to a private developer, who rebuilt paths, a beach and cafes from 2012; the city added the lit walkway in 2016.

What to see and do

  • Walk or jog the lit ~3 km shore loop, timing yourself by the 500 m posts
  • Paddle a catamaran or row a boat out on the water in the warm months
  • Sunbathe and swim at the beach on the southern shore in summer
  • Watch the sun go down over the lake from a cafe terrace
  • Catch Tbilisi Open Air, held each summer at the Lisi Wonderland grounds west of the lake

How to visit

Getting there

Lisi Lake is ~12 km by road from Freedom Square, 20-30 minutes by taxi or ride-hailing car depending on traffic, and there is free parking at the main entrance. City buses and minibuses run up from Saburtalo; check the current route in an app. Delisi is the nearest metro station, but the road from there climbs ~3-4 km to the shore, roughly 45 minutes on foot.

When to go

May–October; mornings or evenings in midsummer. Plan 1.5–3 hours here.

Local tips
  • Weekend afternoons draw big crowds and the car park fills before noon, so come early or on a weekday.
  • Much of the loop has little shade, so carry water and a hat in July and August.
  • On the Tbilisi Open Air weekend in early July the area fills up and parking is scarce, so pick another day for a quiet walk.

Lisi Lake: FAQ

Can you swim in Lisi Lake?

Yes, in summer many people swim from the beach on the southern shore, and the shallow water warms quickly from June. We found no official water-quality report for 2026, so swim where others do and skip it after storms.

How far is Lisi Lake from the centre of Tbilisi?

Lisi Lake is ~12 km by car from the city centre, a ride of 20-30 minutes outside rush hour. A taxi or Bolt is the easy choice; buses and minibuses also go up from Saburtalo, but confirm the number in a transport app first.

How long is the path around the lake?

The loop measures ~3 km, with a post every 500 m. An easy stroll round takes 40-50 minutes, and many runners do several laps.

Is Tbilisi Open Air held at Lisi Lake?

Next to it. Since the mid-2010s the festival has used the Lisi Wonderland grounds just west of the water, usually over a weekend in late June or early July; the 2026 edition was set for 4-5 July.
