Nabeglavi

Small spa village in the forested hills of Chokhatauri municipality, source of Nabeglavi mineral water, on the road to Bakhmaro.

Nabeglavi

Nabeglavi is a small spa village at about 510 m in the green, forested foothills of Chokhatauri municipality, on the road that climbs from Chokhatauri to Bakhmaro. It is known across Georgia as the source of Nabeglavi mineral water, a naturally sparkling bicarbonate water you will see in supermarket and restaurant fridges all over the country. The spring was discovered in 1905, and a small balneological resort grew up around it in the village.

There is not a great deal to do here, and most travellers treat Nabeglavi as a pleasant break on the drive up to Bakhmaro: a short walk in the woods, a coffee and a taste of the water close to its source. The water is somewhat less mineralised than Borjomi and is widely drunk as a table water. Accommodation is limited, so most people stay in Bakhmaro, Chokhatauri or Ozurgeti.

History

The Nabeglavi spring was discovered in 1905, and its reputation for healing properties led to a small health resort being set up in the village. Industrial bottling began in 1958, and the water became one of the best-known mineral water brands in Georgia. It is naturally carbonated, with a bicarbonate, calcium and sodium composition, and today it is bottled by the company Healthy Water.
