Sighnaghi is the most visited town in Kakheti, Georgia's wine region, and the road there is quick and good. It runs past Tbilisi airport and through Sagarejo, then over a low ridge into the Alazani valley, with the Caucasus wall on the horizon on clear days.

With a car you can visit one of the country's oldest domed churches at Ninotsminda, buy hot bread from a roadside clay oven and pay respects at St Nino's grave in Bodbe before you reach town. Add a winery and the transfer becomes a short wine day.
