Juta weather through the year

SpringMar–May

Spring barely registers here. March highs are about 2 °C, and April, the cloudiest month, sits around 7 °C with nights below freezing. Snow usually lies deep in the valley through April, and in May rain and snowmelt build to about 160 mm on 17 days, more wet days than any other month. Avalanches can reach the side road from Sno in spring, so most visitors wait until summer.

Highs 2° to 12° · lows −7° to 2° · 357 mm rain

SummerJun–Aug

Summer is the season, though hardly a dry one. June is the wettest month, about 163 mm on 16 days, and July still gets about 152 mm, much of it in afternoon thunderstorms that roll off the Chaukhi walls. Highs of 17 to 20 °C and nights of 5 to 9 °C make for fresh hiking. July has the clearest skies, around 33% cloud, and snow can cling to the Chaukhi Pass into July.

Highs 17° to 20° · lows 6° to 9° · 448 mm rain

AutumnSep–Nov

September is a strong month for walking: rain falls to about 97 mm on 10 days, highs are about 15 °C and the meadows turn tawny. October is cold, with afternoons near 10 °C and frost most nights, and new snow starts to stick on the passes. By November highs are around 3 °C, the high routes are snowbound and the valley empties.

Highs 3° to 15° · lows −6° to 5° · 236 mm rain

WinterDec–Feb

From December to March Juta is a snowfield. Highs stay below freezing, about -2 to -4 °C, nights bottom out at -9 to -11 °C on average, and roughly 59 to 77 mm of precipitation a month arrives as snow. The access road has a landslide-prone section and avalanche paths, so ask locally before planning a visit. The few winter guests are mostly ski tourers and snowshoers with a 4x4 transfer.

Best time to visit Juta

JFMAMJJASOND
Best weatherGoodLess pleasant or closed

The best time to visit Juta is July and August, when the trail to the Chaukhi Pass is usually clear of snow and afternoons reach about 20 °C. Set off at dawn, since storms often build by early afternoon in this valley, which is markedly wetter than Stepantsminda. September is quieter and a little drier, good for walks below the Chaukhi walls and for crossing to Roshka and the Abudelauri Lakes if snow allows. June is lush but very wet.

Local weather tip

Juta is boxed in by the Chaukhi massif, and its steep walls help make the weather in Juta. Warm valley air rises against them on summer afternoons, part of the reason the Juta weather by month adds up to about 1,220 mm a year, around half as much again as Stepantsminda 12 km away. Cloud can close in within an hour. Start early, carry a map or GPS track, and turn back from the pass at the first thunder.

What to pack for Juta

  • Waterproof jacket and trousers for afternoon storms
  • A warm hat and gloves, even in August
  • Gaiters and waterproof boots for snow on the pass
  • A headlamp for pre-dawn starts
  • A map or GPS track for the Chaukhi Pass

Juta weather: FAQ

When does the snow melt on the Chaukhi Pass?

Snow can remain on the pass into July, especially after a heavy winter, so late July and August are the safest weeks to cross. June attempts often mean steep snowfields that need experience. September is usually the last reliable month, because by October nights in the valley fall to about 0 °C (32 °F) and fresh snow returns.

How long does snow last in Juta?

In a typical year snow covers the valley from about October to April, and it lasts longer on north faces and passes. January averages about -4 °C (25 °F) by day and -11 °C (12 °F) at night. The side road from Sno can be cut by avalanches in spring, so check access before a winter or spring trip.

Why does it rain so much in Juta in summer?

June, July and August bring about 133 to 163 mm a month, far more than winter, as warm air climbs the valley and often builds into thunderstorms against the Chaukhi peaks in the afternoon. Mornings are often clear and calm. Plan to be off exposed ground by early afternoon and carry full rain gear.

Can you camp in Juta in summer?

Yes, the meadows below Chaukhi are a popular camping spot from July to September. August nights in the valley average about 8 °C (46 °F) and are colder higher up, while days reach about 20 °C (68 °F). Pitch away from streams that rise in storms and bring a warm sleeping bag; see the tour page for what gear is included.
