Pasanauri weather through the year
SpringMar–May
Spring is green and very wet. Afternoons warm from about 10 °C in March to around 20 °C by May, and May is the rainiest month of the year, with about 140 mm on 14 days. Snowmelt and rain swell both branches of the Aragvi, which usually run fast and cloudy. The road beyond Gudauri can still shut for snow into April, so check the pass before planning a Kazbegi day.
Highs 10° to 20° · lows −1° to 8° · 306 mm rain
SummerJun–Aug
Summer is the village's best season. Highs of about 24 to 27 °C feel fresh after Tbilisi, nights drop to about 11 to 14 °C, and July and August bring the clearest skies, around 20% cloud. June is still showery, with about 121 mm. Weekend lunchtimes fill with families escaping the city heat, and the riverbanks make an easy picnic spot.
Highs 24° to 27° · lows 11° to 14° · 301 mm rain
AutumnSep–Nov
September is calm and settled, with about 22 °C by day, 10 °C at night and only seven rain days, the fewest of the warm months. October colours the forested slopes, keeps highs near 17 °C and adds a little more rain. By November afternoons fall to about 10 °C, nights reach freezing and the first snow can dust the ridges around the village.
Highs 10° to 22° · lows 0° to 10° · 204 mm rain
WinterDec–Feb
Winter weather in Pasanauri is snowy. Highs reach about 3 to 5 °C from December to February, nights sink to between -4 and -6 °C, and snow usually covers the village from December to February. The road up from Tbilisi is normally kept open, and the village becomes the natural place to wait when the Jvari Pass is shut. A hot plate of khinkali is the best remedy for the cold.

Best time to visit Pasanauri
The best time to visit Pasanauri is June to September, when warm days, cool nights and green valleys make it a pleasant stop or overnight base on the way to Gudauri and Kazbegi. September is the sweet spot, with the least rain of the summer half. May is lush but stormy. In winter the village is snowy and cosy, and skiers can stay here as a quieter base a short drive below Gudauri.
Pasanauri is a junction of two rivers and of lowland and mountain weather. Set deeper in the mountains, the village gets nearly twice the rain of Tbilisi, about 952 mm a year, and the Pasanauri weather by month peaks in May and June. For drivers the practical point is snow: from December to April, closures on the Gudauri to Kobi stretch can stop all traffic north, so check road status here before carrying on.
What to pack for Pasanauri
- A rain jacket for the May and June downpours
- A fleece for cool evenings, even in August
- Winter tyres or chains from December to April
- Snacks and water in case the pass closes
Pasanauri weather: FAQ
Is Pasanauri a good place to escape the summer heat?
Yes. July and August afternoons average about 27 °C (81 °F), roughly 5 °C below Tbilisi, and nights fall to about 14 °C (57 °F), so you sleep well without air conditioning. The same months have the clearest skies of the year, ideal for walks along the Aragvi and a long khinkali lunch outdoors.
When does it rain most in Pasanauri?
Late spring. May averages about 140 mm on 14 days and June about 121 mm, the wettest pair of months. Rain eases in September, with about 71 mm on seven days, and February is the driest month at about 43 mm, although in winter most of it falls as snow.
How snowy is Pasanauri in winter?
Very. In a typical winter snow lies from about December to February, with January afternoons near 3 °C (37 °F) and nights about -6 °C (21 °F). The village looks lovely under snow, but drive with winter tyres and allow extra time for the climb on to Gudauri.
What happens in Pasanauri when the Jvari Pass closes?
Traffic heading for Kazbegi and the Russian border stops further up, at Gudauri, while the road from Tbilisi to Pasanauri and on to the resort usually stays open. Many drivers wait it out in the village over lunch or a night. Closures happen repeatedly from December to April, so keep a flexible plan.
