Gori weather through the year

SpringMar–May

March warms to about 12 °C, April to 18 °C and May to 22 °C, and the orchards of Shida Kartli usually blossom in April. May is the wettest month, but only by Gori's modest standards: about 66 mm on 10 days. Spring is a fine season for the climb to Gori Fortress and for the rock-cut halls of Uplistsikhe, before the stone heats up.

Highs 12° to 22° · lows 1° to 10° · 155 mm rain

SummerJun–Aug

June, at 26 °C, is pleasant, but July and August bring about 29 to 30 °C, nights near 17 °C and clear skies, with cloud cover around 20%. Rain is scarce, only five or six days a month. Uplistsikhe's bare sandstone has no shade, so go first thing in the morning; the Stalin Museum makes a good indoor stop for the hot middle of the day.

Highs 26° to 30° · lows 14° to 17° · 137 mm rain

AutumnSep–Nov

September is Gori's most settled month: about 25 °C by day, 13 °C at night and just 35 mm of rain on roughly five days. October cools to 19 °C, good weather for the vineyards of the Ateni Valley and the frescoes of Ateni Sioni. November is grey and chilly at 12 °C, with frost beginning to appear at night.

Highs 12° to 25° · lows 2° to 13° · 124 mm rain

WinterDec–Feb

Winters are cold and fairly dry. January highs average about 6 °C and lows -3 °C, a little colder than Tbilisi, especially after dark, and most winters bring snow that lingers for days or a couple of weeks. With only around 30 mm of precipitation a month, many winter days are crisp and dry, fine for a day trip, though the fortress path can be icy.

Highs 6° to 7° · lows −3° to −2° · 91 mm rain

Best time to visit Gori

JFMAMJJASOND
Best weatherGoodLess pleasant or closed

The best time to visit Gori is May to June and September to early October. Days of 22 to 26 °C are warm enough for the fortress and Uplistsikhe without the midsummer glare, and rain is light. July and August work if you start early, as afternoons reach 30 °C. Gori weather by month also has a good word for winter: cold but often dry, which makes the city an easy day trip from Tbilisi, with fewer visitors at the museum and at Uplistsikhe.

Local weather tip

The Shida Kartli plain is a broad basin with the Likhi range to the west and the Greater Caucasus to the north, and both block much Black Sea moisture. That makes the weather in Gori dry and sunny: about 507 mm of rain a year, against 716 mm in Surami under the Likhi. Sightseeing is dependable, but shade is scarce on the open fields and on Uplistsikhe's bare rock, so bring a hat and water in summer.

What to pack for Gori

  • Sun hat and water for shadeless Uplistsikhe
  • Shoes with grip for smooth, worn rock steps
  • Sunglasses for glare off pale sandstone
  • Warm coat for frosty winter day trips
  • A light layer for cool spring evenings

Gori weather: FAQ

Is Gori colder than Tbilisi?

Slightly, mostly at night and in winter. Gori's January averages about 6 °C (42 °F) by day and -3 °C (27 °F) at night, against roughly 7 °C and 0 °C in Tbilisi. Summers are a touch cooler too, about 30 °C (86 °F) in August against Tbilisi's 32 °C. Snow is also more common here: most winters bring a few spells of it, while in Tbilisi it rarely lies.

When is it too hot to visit Uplistsikhe?

Midday in July and August. Gori's average highs then sit just under 30 °C (86 °F), and Uplistsikhe's pale sandstone throws the sun back at you with almost no shade. Arrive at opening time or in the last hours before closing. From mid-September to May the site is comfortable even in the middle of the day.

What is the driest month in Gori?

February, with about 28 mm, though January, August and September are almost as dry. For travel, rain days matter more: August and September average only about five days with 1 mm or more, so outdoor plans are rarely washed out. May is the wettest month, at about 66 mm, with highs near 22 °C (72 °F).

Is Gori worth a day trip in winter?

Yes, if you dress for the cold. January days average about 6 °C (42 °F), visitor numbers are low, and the Stalin Museum is indoors. Uplistsikhe is quiet and atmospheric, though its worn rock steps can be icy after snow. Combine the two with Gori Fortress for a short winter outing from Tbilisi.
