Surami weather through the year

SpringMar–May

Spring comes slowly to the foothills. March reaches about 9 °C, April 15 °C and May 20 °C, and April is the cloudiest month (45%). Rain is moderate, 51 to 66 mm a month, and the forest paths dry out as May warms. Nights stay cool until late in the season, around 5 °C in April, so bring a sweater for evenings.

Highs 9° to 20° · lows 1° to 10° · 171 mm rain

SummerJun–Aug

This is the resort season. June highs are about 24 °C, July 27 °C and August 28 °C, with nights around 16 °C, comfortable for sleeping. August is the driest (41 mm) and clearest (25% cloud) month. Walks in the pine woods, a visit to Surami Fortress and a stop for warm nazuki bread at the roadside ovens fill a summer day well.

Highs 24° to 28° · lows 13° to 17° · 154 mm rain

AutumnSep–Nov

September is still mild, with 23 °C afternoons and 12 °C nights. October cools to 17 °C and the rain returns: about 63 mm in October and 71 mm in November, as weather systems from the Black Sea begin to push over the Likhi range. November highs are around 10 °C, making it a damp, grey month to travel.

Highs 10° to 23° · lows 2° to 12° · 180 mm rain

WinterDec–Feb

Winter here is wetter than in Gori or Tbilisi. December and January each get about 75 mm, much of it as snow, though a cover rarely survives the whole winter. Typical January highs are about 4 °C, lows about -3 °C. The town is quiet, and drivers heading west on the main highway should allow for snow over the Rikoti section of the Likhi range.

Best time to visit Surami

JFMAMJJASOND
Best weatherGoodLess pleasant or closed

The best time to visit Surami is May to September, when mild temperatures of 20 to 28 °C by day bring back the old climatic-resort feel. June and September are ideal for walks without heat, and August is the clearest and driest month. Spring and autumn suit a short stop at Surami Fortress on the way to Borjomi. If you compare Surami weather by month with Gori's, winter stands out as the snowy, slushy season: then the town is very quiet, best treated as a nazuki stop on the highway.

Local weather tip

Surami sits right where east meets west. The Likhi range, just behind the town, divides Georgia's humid west from the drier east, and damp Black Sea air spills over it in winter. That gives the weather in Surami its odd calendar: rain and snow peak in midwinter, with about 75 mm in both December and January, while August is the driest month. In practice, winter visits mean snow and slush underfoot, and summer is the dependable season for forest walks.

What to pack for Surami

  • Light jacket for cool pine-forest evenings
  • Waterproof boots for slushy December and January
  • Umbrella for the autumn rains from October
  • Small change for warm nazuki at roadside bakeries
  • Comfortable shoes for forest paths around town

Surami weather: FAQ

Why is winter the wettest season in Surami?

Because Surami sits at the foot of the Likhi range, the ridge that splits western and eastern Georgia. When winter storms roll in from the Black Sea, the moist air is driven over the ridge and drops rain and snow on this side, so December and January each average about 75 mm. Further east, in Gori, January brings only about 29 mm.

Is Surami cooler than Tbilisi in summer?

Yes, noticeably. Surami's August highs average about 28 °C (82 °F) and July about 27 °C (80 °F), against roughly 32 °C (90 °F) in Tbilisi, and its nights near 16 °C (61 °F) are fresher. That difference is why Surami has long been a summer retreat for families from the capital.

Is Surami snowy in winter?

Often. Most winters bring several snowfalls, and some stay put for a week or more before thawing, and on a typical January night the temperature falls to about -3 °C (27 °F). The pine woods look lovely under snow, but side streets and forest paths get icy, so wear boots with grip, and expect slush on the days when the temperature climbs above freezing.

What is the best month for a pine-forest stay in Surami?

June or September. Both have comfortable afternoons, around 24 °C (75 °F) in June and 23 °C (73 °F) in September, cool nights and fewer visitors than August. July and August are warmer, at 27 to 28 °C, but still milder than the plain around Gori. Avoid November to January if you want dry walks: those are the wettest months.
