Borjomi weather through the year

SpringMar–May

March starts cool, with 12 °C afternoons and nights just under freezing, but by April the park is green and afternoons reach 17 °C. May tops the rainfall chart, about 92 mm on 13 days, so pack an umbrella along with sunglasses. Spring is a good season for the mineral springs, the cable car and the Green Monastery, while the higher national park trails usually keep snow into May.

Highs 12° to 22° · lows 0° to 9° · 195 mm rain

SummerJun–Aug

June is close to ideal: highs near 26 °C, nights around 13 °C and fewer wet days than May. July and August warm up to 28 to 29 °C, with the clearest summer skies (27% cloud in August) and only six or seven rainy days a month. The gorge cools quickly after sunset, so evenings on the riverside promenade are comfortable. Keep midday walks to the shaded forest paths.

Highs 26° to 29° · lows 13° to 16° · 152 mm rain

AutumnSep–Nov

September is the clearest month (26% cloud) and one of the two best by our comfort score: around 24 °C by day and 11 °C at night. October brings 19 °C afternoons and autumn colour on the gorge slopes, with rain rising again to about 62 mm. November is grey and cool, with highs near 11 °C and lows hovering just above freezing.

Highs 11° to 24° · lows 1° to 11° · 171 mm rain

WinterDec–Feb

Winter is cold enough for snow but rarely harsh. January brings highs of about 5 °C and lows of -4 °C, and a snowfall may stay for days or a couple of weeks before melting. Precipitation is low, only 35 to 38 mm a month from December to February, so many winter days are dry. Borjomi is also the practical base for skiing at Bakuriani, 30 km and about 40 minutes uphill.

Highs 5° to 7° · lows −4° to −3° · 110 mm rain

Best time to visit Borjomi

JFMAMJJASOND
Best weatherGoodLess pleasant or closed

The best time to visit Borjomi is June or September, and a look at Borjomi weather by month shows why: warm, mostly dry days of 24 to 26 °C and comfortable evenings for the park, the cable car and the walk to the sulphur pools. May is green but the wettest month. July and August are fine but busy with Tbilisi families escaping the heat. In winter, come for snowy forest walks, mineral water in the frosty park and day trips to the ski slopes of Bakuriani.

Local weather tip

Late spring is Borjomi's wet season. May brings about 92 mm on 13 days and June another 66 mm, the two wettest months of the year, and the forest holds the water for days afterwards. For walkers that means muddy, slippery paths in the park and on the national park trails, and swollen side streams. If May is your only option, keep hikes short and low, and save the long routes for a dry spell or for September.

What to pack for Borjomi

  • Light jacket for cool evenings in the gorge
  • Umbrella for May, the wettest month
  • A cup or bottle to taste the warm spring water
  • Swimwear for the open-air sulphur pools
  • Hiking boots with grip for national park trails
  • Warm boots for snowy park paths in winter

Borjomi weather: FAQ

Does it snow in Borjomi?

Yes, in most winters, mainly between December and early March. A good fall can keep the park white for a while, sometimes a couple of weeks, before it melts, so a snowy stay is likely but not guaranteed. January nights average around -4 °C (25 °F), with afternoons near 5 °C (41 °F). For snow that lasts all winter, and for skiing, go to Bakuriani, 30 km up the road.

Is Borjomi hot in summer?

Warm rather than hot. August, the warmest month, averages about 29 °C (85 °F) in the afternoon and 15 °C (59 °F) at night, a few degrees below Tbilisi's 32 °C (90 °F). The park's shade and the forest paths make midday bearable, and evenings are fresh. For real coolness, head up to Bakuriani, where August afternoons are about 6 °C lower.

Which months are best for hiking in Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park?

June to early October. The long trails climb from the gorge to alpine meadows, where snow usually lingers into late spring and returns in autumn. June brings warm days, with about 26 °C (79 °F) in town, but follows the wet May, so expect some mud; September, the clearest month, is the most settled. Book ranger shelters ahead for multi-day routes.

Should I stay in Borjomi or Bakuriani in winter?

Stay in Bakuriani if skiing is the main point: the lifts are close, and snow there usually lasts from November to March, while in Borjomi it comes and goes. Choose Borjomi if you prefer milder nights, about -4 °C (25 °F) against -10 °C (14 °F) in January, plus the spa park and town life, and you do not mind about 40 minutes on a snowy road each way.
