Abastumani weather through the year
SpringMar–May
March can still bring snow, with highs of about 9 °C and nights of -4 °C; March is also the driest month, at about 31 mm. April reaches 14 °C and May 19 °C, but rain rises sharply in May, to about 83 mm on 13 days. The pine forest is fresh and quiet, though higher trails usually stay muddy or snowy until late spring.
Highs 9° to 19° · lows −4° to 5° · 170 mm rain
SummerJun–Aug
June is the wettest month, about 107 mm on 14 days, so expect showers. July and August are warm and pleasant with afternoons of 26 to 27 °C and nights near 12 °C, the old spa's main season for families escaping the lowland heat. Cloud cover is higher than you might expect, 34 to 40%, so not every summer night is good for stargazing.
Highs 23° to 27° · lows 9° to 12° · 222 mm rain
AutumnSep–Nov
September is the clearest month at 30% cloud, with highs near 22 °C and cold nights around 7 °C, which makes it the best time for the observatory. October is still bright, about 16 °C by day but only 2 °C at night. By November highs are down to 9 °C, frosts are regular and the first snow showers can arrive.
Highs 9° to 22° · lows −3° to 7° · 129 mm rain
WinterDec–Feb
Abastumani has a proper mountain winter. In January the high is only about 1 °C and the low -8 °C, and a snow cover usually lasts through December, January and February. January is also the cloudiest month (46%), which limits winter stargazing. The village is quiet, and the road from Akhaltsikhe can be snowy and icy, so winter tyres are essential.
Highs 1° to 3° · lows −8° to −7° · 130 mm rain
Best time to visit Abastumani
The best time to visit Abastumani is July to September. Summer brings pleasant 26 to 27 °C days in the pine woods, and September adds the clearest skies of the year for the observatory, with highs near 22 °C. Late June is green but showery. For stargazing, also pick a night near the new moon and check the observatory's visiting schedule. Abastumani weather by month makes winter a season for snow and silence, though cloudy January skies are poor for astronomy.
Snow defines the weather in Abastumani: the village is usually white from December to February, and the ridges above keep their snow far longer. That matters for routes. The paved road from Akhaltsikhe is the year-round way in, but the rough track north over the Zekari Pass towards Imereti is usually passable only from early summer to autumn, and then only in a 4x4. Outside that window, come and go via Akhaltsikhe and carry chains in winter.
What to pack for Abastumani
- Warm coat and hat for observatory nights
- Rain jacket for showery June
- Red-light torch for stargazing
- Snow boots for December to February
- Walking shoes for the pine-forest trails
