Best time to visit Bakhmaro
The best time to visit Bakhmaro is July and August, when the road is open, cottages are let and highs of 18-19 °C bring relief from the heat of the coast. Come on 19 August for the traditional horse race, but book early. September is the clearest month and quieter, good for ridge hikes, though nights drop to about 5 °C. June suits walkers who accept fresher air and more rain. Avoid November to April.
The weather in Bakhmaro is famous for clean, cool air, and just as well known for fog. Cloud rising from the Guria lowlands often wraps the resort for hours, cutting visibility on the ridges and on the long, winding road up. Drive the road in daylight with headlights on, and on walks carry a torch, a warm layer and a downloaded map, since familiar paths look different in thick cloud.

Bakhmaro weather: FAQ
Is the road to Bakhmaro open in winter?
Usually not. In recent years the road has opened in May and closed between late October and early December, and in a normal year snow lies from about November until April. Winter nights average about -9 °C (16 °F). Plan any trip for June to September, and check road status if you travel in May or October.
How cold does Bakhmaro get in summer?
Cooler than most visitors expect. Even in August, highs average about 19 °C (66 °F) and nights about 8 °C (47 °F), and fog can make it feel colder. Pack a warm jacket, a hat and long trousers for the evenings, even when the coast below is near 29 °C (85 °F).
What is the weather like for the Bakhmaro horse race?
The race is held on 19 August, in the warmest month: afternoons average about 19 °C (66 °F), and skies are clearer than in June or July. The Bakhmaro weather by month still shows rain on about 11 days in August, so bring a waterproof, and dress warmly if you stay into the evening, when temperatures drop towards 8-9 °C.
Why is Bakhmaro so foggy?
Moist air from the Black Sea is pushed up the slopes of the Meskheti range, cools and condenses into cloud around the resort at about 2,000 m. The result is frequent fog, with rain or snow on 11-16 days a month. September has the least cloud, about 32%, and often gives the clearest views.
