Gomismta Weather
Gomismta weather explains its famous view: at about 2,000 m above Ozurgeti, the village often looks down on a sea of clouds filling the Guria valleys. The same moisture brings about 2,300 mm of rain on roughly 180 days a year, more wet days than any other place we cover. August afternoons peak at about 18.5 °C (65 °F), with nights close to 8 °C (47 °F). It is a summer-only escape for photographers and walkers.

Gomismta weather through the year
SpringMar–May
Snow still rules in early spring. In March the thermometer reaches only about 3 °C in the afternoon and sinks to -7 °C at night, and snow lingers on the ridges long after it has gone from Ozurgeti. April is the driest month, though still about 113 mm. By May highs reach 12 °C, but rain or sleet falls on about 15 days, and the summer season has not yet begun.
Highs 3° to 12° · lows −7° to 1° · 400 mm rain
SummerJun–Aug
Summer days are cool, with highs of 15 °C in June and 18-19 °C in July and August, and nights of 5-8 °C. Rain falls on 13-15 days a month, so fog and showers are part of every stay. Those same conditions feed the cloud seas below the village, most often seen early in the morning and around sunset. Bring warm clothes even in August.
Highs 15° to 19° · lows 5° to 8° · 471 mm rain
AutumnSep–Nov
September is the clearest month, about 34% cloud, with highs of 15-16 °C and cold nights near 4-5 °C, often giving crisp views over the clouds. October brings the most rain of any month, about 266 mm on 14 days, and nights reach freezing. The first snow usually arrives by November.
Highs 6° to 16° · lows −5° to 5° · 724 mm rain
WinterDec–Feb
Winter is snowbound and deserted. The snow season typically runs from November to April, nights in January average -9 °C, and 200-260 mm of precipitation falls each month on 16-18 days. This is a summer settlement, essentially empty in the cold months, so Gomismta is not a winter destination.
Highs −1° to 1° · lows −9° to −8° · 704 mm rain
Best time to visit Gomismta
The best time to visit Gomismta is July and August, when days are warmest at 18-19 °C, the cottages are open and cloud seas below the ridges are a regular sight at dawn and dusk. September is clearer and quieter, good for photographers who do not mind nights near 5 °C. June is possible but wetter. From November to April deep snow puts the village out of season.
The famous cloud sea forms when cool, damp air settles in the valleys while the ridges at about 2,000 m stay above it. But the weather in Gomismta also wraps the village itself in cloud on many days, with rain on about 180 days a year. Allow two nights rather than one, watch the sky at dawn and dusk, and drive down slowly when fog closes in.
What to pack for Gomismta
- Warm jacket, hat and gloves for 5 °C nights
- Waterproof boots for wet meadows and muddy paths
- A tripod and spare batteries for sunrise above the clouds
- A rain cover for your camera bag
Gomismta weather: FAQ
How often does Gomismta have clear weather?
Not often: rain falls on about 180 days a year, more than at any other place in our weather section. September is the clearest month, with about 34% cloud, while July, at about 47%, is cloudier than August. The Gomismta weather by month shows showers on 13-15 days a month even in summer, so stay at least two nights to improve your odds of a clear sunrise.
What should I wear in Gomismta in August?
Warm layers. August afternoons average about 18.5 °C (65 °F), but nights drop to about 8 °C (47 °F) and fog makes it feel colder. Bring a fleece or down jacket, long trousers, a waterproof shell and shoes that can handle wet grass. Ozurgeti, down in the valley, is near 29 °C (84 °F) in August, so pack for both.
Is Gomismta colder than Bakhmaro?
Almost the same: both sit at about 2,000 m, with August highs of 18.5-19 °C and January nights around -9 °C (15-16 °F). The big difference is rain. Gomismta gets about 2,300 mm a year on some 180 days, against about 1,560 mm on 158 days at Bakhmaro, so it is foggier and wetter.
Does Gomismta get snow?
A lot. In a typical year the meadows are white from about November to April, roughly half the year, and January and February nights average about -9 °C (15-16 °F). The village is a summer settlement with no ski lifts, so plan any visit for June to September, when the meadows are green and the cottages open.
