Its walls follow the shape of the hilltop, which gives the citadel an irregular outline, and they enclose a flat plateau with the remains of buildings. What stands today dates mostly from rebuilding under King Rostom of Kartli in the 1630s and King Erekle II in 1774. It is an open site, and visitors can usually walk up and around it without a ticket.
The main reason to climb is the view across Gori's rooftops to the Stalin Museum, the Mtkvari and Liakhvi valleys, and on clear days the snow peaks of the Greater Caucasus to the north. A path leads up from the road below. At the foot of the hill stands a memorial to Georgian warriors. The fortress is a good start or end to a visit to the Stalin Museum, about 500 m away.
History
Archaeology suggests the hill was fortified in the last centuries BC, and the fortress appears in written records from the 13th century. It controlled the main road through the Mtkvari valley and was fought over many times. Its present form comes from rebuilding under King Rostom in the 1630s and Erekle II in 1774. Originally the walls ran down to the river, which was reached through a tunnel. The 1920 Gori earthquake badly damaged the fortress.
