Rain and rain days come from Kojori's own weather station (daily records 1966-1992, NOAA GHCN-Daily). Temperatures are estimated for this spot from 1991–2020 station averages and a 1 km climate model (CHELSA). Cloud cover: CHELSA 1981–2010. Daylight and sunrise are for the 15th of each month (Georgia keeps UTC+4 all year). A rain day has at least 1 mm.

Kojori weather through the year

SpringMar–May

Spring reaches the ridge late. March highs are only about 8 °C, nights still freeze, and patches of snow can linger in shaded woods into April. May is the wettest month, with about 111 mm across 13 rain days, so the path to Azeula Fortress turns slick and muddy. The reward is fresh green forest and wild flowers, and May afternoons near 18 °C are comfortable for a stroll.

Highs 8° to 18° · lows −2° to 7° · 243 mm rain

SummerJun–Aug

This is Kojori's season. Highs climb from about 23 °C in June to 26 °C in July and August, nights drop to a pleasant 11 to 14 °C, and the two midsummer months bring only about seven rain days each. Families from Tbilisi drive up for cooler evenings and long outdoor dinners. Bring a layer for after sunset, and expect the odd heavy June shower left over from the stormy spring.

Highs 23° to 26° · lows 11° to 14° · 214 mm rain

AutumnSep–Nov

September is still mild at about 21 °C by day, and skies stay mostly clear, with cloud near 28%. October drops to about 15 °C, nights fall to around 4 °C and the woods change colour. By November afternoons manage only about 8 °C, frost returns most nights and the first snow is possible, which makes forest tracks and the steeper lanes slippery.

Highs 8° to 21° · lows −1° to 9° · 166 mm rain

WinterDec–Feb

From December to February the weather in Kojori has little in common with the city. Afternoons reach only 3 to 4 °C, and after dark the ridge sits at about -4 to -6 °C. Snow usually lies for weeks. The winding road up can ice over, so winter tyres or a local driver help. Precipitation is at its lowest in December, about 31 mm, and crisp, clear days show the snowy hills at their best.

Best time to visit Kojori

JFMAMJJASOND
Best weatherGoodLess pleasant or closed

The best time to visit Kojori is June to September, when the ridge runs 5 to 6 °C cooler than Tbilisi and the rain eases after the late-spring peak. Hikers heading down towards Asureti or out to Kldekari should aim for September, which pairs firm, dry paths with highs near 21 °C. Late spring is greener but muddier. For snow, come between December and February: this is the nearest place to the capital where a white landscape usually lasts.

Local weather tip

Altitude explains almost everything here. Kojori lies roughly 900 m above central Tbilisi, and the gap shows in every line of the Kojori weather by month table: about 6 °C cooler, close to half as much rain again (740 mm against 511 mm) and a snow cover lasting from December to February, where the city rarely keeps snow beyond a day or two. In practice you can leave the city in a T-shirt and want a fleece at the top.

What to pack for Kojori

  • A fleece or light jacket for cool summer evenings
  • Grippy footwear for the stony climb to Azeula Fortress
  • A rain jacket for the stormy weeks of May and June
  • Warm hat, gloves and snow boots from December to February

Kojori weather: FAQ

How much cooler is Kojori than Tbilisi?

On average about 5 to 6 °C in every season. A typical July afternoon is about 26 °C (79 °F) on the ridge against 32 °C (90 °F) in central Tbilisi, and in January Kojori averages a high of about 3 °C (37 °F) while the city reaches 7 °C (45 °F). Nights feel the difference most.

Is Kojori snowy in winter?

Yes, usually. In a typical winter the ground stays snowy from about December to February, and nights average around -6 °C (21 °F) in January and February. It is the closest spot to the capital where snow tends to stay, but the hill road can be icy, so allow extra time.

How warm is it at the Didgori memorial in August?

Didgoroba, which marks the Battle of Didgori in 1121, is held in August, and the high ground around the memorial averages about 26 °C (79 °F) in the afternoon with mostly clear skies. The site is largely open, so bring a hat, sunscreen and water, plus a jacket if you stay into the evening.

Can you hike from Kojori to Asureti?

Yes, the walk down through the forest makes a good day out. Go between June and October, when paths are mostly dry; May is the wettest month, at about 111 mm. Start in the morning, since the route ends in the lowlands, where Asureti is noticeably warmer than the ridge, and download a GPS track first.
