Marneuli weather through the year
SpringMar–May
The plain warms quickly in spring. March reaches about 15 °C, April about 20 °C and May about 25 °C, when the farmland around town turns green and planting is in full swing. May is also the wettest month, yet it averages only about 59 mm, spread over roughly nine days of short showers. Nights stay cool, from about 4 °C in March to 13 °C in May, so a jacket helps after dark.
Highs 15° to 25° · lows 4° to 13° · 133 mm rain
SummerJun–Aug
Summers are long and hot. June averages about 30 °C, and July and August about 34 °C, with nights near 21 °C. Rain almost vanishes after June, with only four or five wet days a month and cloud over less than a fifth of the sky. Shop the market early, while the produce is freshest and the heat has not built, and drink plenty if you head out to the archaeological mounds.
Highs 30° to 34° · lows 18° to 21° · 107 mm rain
AutumnSep–Nov
Autumn is harvest time and the most pleasant season here. September still reaches about 28 °C and October a gentle 21 °C, and both months bring only five or six days with rain. The stalls are at their fullest with late vegetables and fruit. By November afternoons fall to about 14 °C and nights to 4 °C, cool but still mostly dry.
Highs 14° to 28° · lows 4° to 16° · 95 mm rain
WinterDec–Feb
The weather in Marneuli in winter is mild and dry. December to February highs sit around 8 to 10 °C, and nights hover close to 0 °C. December and January each bring only about 18 to 19 mm of rain, and snow rarely settles on the plain. A grey day is usually the worst of it, which makes the town an easy winter stop on the road to Bolnisi or the Sadakhlo border crossing.
Highs 8° to 10° · lows 0° to 0° · 60 mm rain
Best time to visit Marneuli
The best time to visit Marneuli is May, September or October, when highs range from about 21 to 28 °C and the plain is green or freshly harvested rather than baked. These months also suit the Neolithic hill sites near Shulaveri, where some of the oldest known traces of grape wine were found, since there is no shade on the mounds. In summer, keep to an early market visit. Winter is mild enough for a combined day with Bolnisi and Dmanisi.
Marneuli sits in the driest corner of the Tbilisi area. The Marneuli weather by month shows about a quarter less rain than the capital, and from July to September each month gets under 30 mm. The practical side: unpaved roads to villages and excavations turn dusty in summer, so keep the car windows closed and a scarf handy. After a spring downpour the same tracks can turn to sticky mud.
What to pack for Marneuli
- A sun hat and sunscreen for the treeless plain
- A scarf against dust on summer village roads
- Loose clothes that cover shoulders for the mosque
- A refillable bottle for long, hot afternoons
- A light sweater for cool spring nights
