Telavi weather through the year
SpringMar–May
Spring is lush and increasingly wet. March highs reach about 13 °C under the cloudiest skies of the year, April about 18 °C, and May about 23 °C with the heaviest rain, about 119 mm on 12 days. The vines bud, the Alazani plain turns bright green and snow still caps the Greater Caucasus across the valley, a classic view from the walls of Batonis Tsikhe.
Highs 13° to 23° · lows 3° to 12° · 261 mm rain
SummerJun–Aug
Summer is hot, if a degree or so milder than in Tbilisi. June averages about 28 °C, July and August about 31 °C, with nights around 19 °C. Rain falls on six or seven days a month, often in storms that build over the mountains. The shade of the giant old plane tree in the centre and the park at Tsinandali Estate make good refuges on a hot afternoon.
Highs 28° to 31° · lows 16° to 19° · 230 mm rain
AutumnSep–Nov
Autumn is Telavi's high season. September averages about 26 °C with clear skies and brings Rtveli, the grape harvest, from mid-September into October, along with Alaverdoba and the Tsinandali Festival. October is cooler, about 20 °C, and hosts TelaVino. November cools to about 13 °C, with 4 °C nights, and Erekleoba closes the festival year in town.
Highs 13° to 26° · lows 4° to 15° · 178 mm rain
WinterDec–Feb
Winter rounds off the Telavi weather by month on a cool, fairly dry note. Highs settle at 7 to 8 °C, lows stay near 0 °C, and only 28 to 29 mm of rain falls in each month. Snow is more frequent than in Tbilisi, and the frosty, clear days give the sharpest views of the snowbound Caucasus. Wine cellars, monasteries such as Ikalto and Alaverdi, and long lunches fill the short days.
Highs 7° to 8° · lows −1° to 0° · 85 mm rain
Best time to visit Telavi
The best time to visit Telavi is from mid-September to mid-October. Days of about 20 to 26 °C, clear skies and the Rtveli harvest make it the liveliest season for wineries, supras and the festivals at Alaverdi and Tsinandali. Late May and June are a greener second choice, though May is the wettest month. July and August suit travellers who do not mind 31 °C afternoons. Winter is quiet but fine for indoor tastings and monastery visits.
The Greater Caucasus rises straight out of the Alazani valley opposite Telavi, and the range shapes the weather in Telavi. Moist air meeting the mountains helps give the town about 754 mm of rain a year, roughly 240 mm more than Tbilisi, and summer storms often form over the peaks before drifting across the valley. The reward is the view: on clear autumn and winter mornings a snowy wall fills the northern horizon.
What to pack for Telavi
- A linen shirt and sun hat for August vineyard tours
- An umbrella for the May downpours
- A light sweater for cool October evening supras
- A warm coat and gloves for December to February
Telavi weather: FAQ
When is the grape harvest in Telavi?
Harvest work begins around the middle of September and continues well into October, with exact dates shifting by grape and by season. The weather suits it well: September afternoons average about 26 °C (79 °F) and October about 20 °C (68 °F), with mostly clear skies and about seven rain days a month. Book wineries and guesthouses early for these weeks.
How snowy are Telavi winters?
Snowier than Tbilisi's, being closer to the mountains: most winters bring snow, and a fall can hang around for days or a few weeks before it melts. Even so, January afternoons average about 7 °C (45 °F) and nights about -1 °C (30 °F), so the cold is rarely severe. The Gombori Pass above Telavi gets far more snow and can close briefly.
Is the Gombori Pass open in winter?
Yes, the road from Tbilisi over the Gombori Pass is open all year, and recent winters brought only short closures after snow and one for rockfall, after long rebuilding closures in 2024. Conditions change quickly, so check road status before you set off, and use the longer route through Sagarejo and Gurjaani if the pass is shut.
Is May a good month to visit Telavi?
It is green and pleasant, with highs of about 23 °C (73 °F), but also the wettest month, with about 119 mm of rain on 12 days. Showers tend to come in bursts, so plan winery visits around indoor tastings and keep outdoor sights such as Alaverdi and Ikalto for the drier hours.
