AutumnSep–Nov

September cools to about 27 °C and October to 20 °C, and both see rain on only about seven days. This is harvest time in Mukuzani and the surrounding villages, and the Gurjaani Wine Festival in October usually falls in mild, golden weather. November turns grey and cooler, around 13 °C, with about 52 mm of rain.

Best time to visit Gurjaani

JFMAMJJASOND
Best weatherGoodLess pleasant or closed

The best time to visit Gurjaani is September and October. Days settle at 20 to 27 °C, the grapes come in around Mukuzani, and the town's wine festival takes place in October. Scan Gurjaani weather by month and late May and June come out second: green vineyards and long evenings, though rain peaks then. Midsummer is hot for cellar-hopping by car, but fine with an early start. Winter suits travellers who want quiet tastings and mild days more than scenery at its best.

Local weather tip

Gurjaani lies on the south-western side of the Alazani valley, below the Tsiv-Gombori ridge, with the Caucasus on the far side of the plain. Being farther from the big mountains than Kvareli, it gets less rain (about 794 mm against 959 mm), and in summer the heat pools on the flat valley floor. The weather in Gurjaani therefore rewards early starts in July and August: drive between cellars in the morning and save Kvelatsminda for late afternoon.

What to pack for Gurjaani

  • Wide-brimmed hat for exposed vineyard rows
  • A light jacket for October festival evenings
  • Compact umbrella for May and June
  • Closed shoes for muddy harvest paths
  • Plenty of water for hot days in the car

Gurjaani weather: FAQ

What is the weather like for the Gurjaani Wine Festival?

The festival is held in October, one of Gurjaani's most comfortable months. Afternoons average about 20 °C (68 °F), evenings cool to around 11 °C (52 °F), and rain falls on about seven days in the month. Bring a light jacket for after dark and shoes that can cope with a damp field.

How mild are winters in Gurjaani?

Very mild for the Caucasus. January highs average about 8 °C (46 °F) and lows about 1 °C (33 °F), and snow on the ground is rare and short-lived. December and January are also the driest months, with roughly 31 to 32 mm each, so a winter tasting trip is seldom spoiled by bad weather.

Which month gets the most rain in Gurjaani?

May, with about 114 mm on roughly 12 days, followed by June with about 101 mm. This late-spring rain often arrives as heavy afternoon showers, so mornings tend to be dry. From July the valley dries out, and by August only about six days a month bring rain.

Is Gurjaani hotter than Sighnaghi?

Yes, by a couple of degrees. Gurjaani sits on the valley floor at ~415 m, Sighnaghi on a ridge at ~790 m: July highs average about 32 °C (89 °F) here against about 30 °C (85 °F) in Sighnaghi, and winter nights are milder too. If heat bothers you, sleep in Sighnaghi and visit Gurjaani by day.
