Dedoplistskaro weather through the year
SpringMar–May
Spring is the green season on the steppe. March, at 11 °C, is the cloudiest month (47%), April reaches 16 °C and May about 21 °C. Showers are frequent but light: May brings the most rain, around 92 mm, usually as short downpours on about ten days. This is when the grassland flowers, eagles and vultures circle over the cliffs, and the tracks into Vashlovani are usually passable between rains.
Highs 11° to 21° · lows 1° to 11° · 204 mm rain
SummerJun–Aug
June, at about 27 °C, is still pleasant, but July and August push to about 30 °C, with nights around 18 °C and the clearest skies of the year. The ridge of Khornabuji Fortress and the open steppe have no shade, and Vashlovani, lower and drier to the south-east, is usually hotter still. Start at dawn, carry plenty of water and spend the middle of the day over a long lunch in town.
Highs 27° to 30° · lows 16° to 18° · 162 mm rain
AutumnSep–Nov
September cools to afternoon highs of about 25 °C and nights of 14 °C, and with clear skies (22% cloud) it is the best month for long days in Vashlovani or at Chachuna. October is mild at 18 °C, though showers return on about six days of the month. November drops to 11 °C, with frosty nights not far off.

January highs average about 5 °C and lows -3 °C, and snow, unusual in lowland Kakheti, turns up in most winters and may hang around for a week or more. December is the driest month, just 21 mm. Clear, frosty days are good for Khornabuji and the town, but dirt tracks into Vashlovani can turn muddy or icy, so ask locally before heading out.

Best time to visit Dedoplistskaro
The best time to visit Dedoplistskaro is late April to early June, or September to mid-October. Spring brings flowers, birds and 16 to 21 °C days, ideal for the ridge walk at Khornabuji and drives into Vashlovani. September and early October repeat those mild temperatures with drier tracks and clearer skies. High summer, around 30 °C in town and hotter on the semi-desert floor, suits only dawn outings. Winter is quiet and frosty, with spells of lying snow in most years.
The weather in Dedoplistskaro is dry by Georgian standards: roughly 591 mm a year on some 80 rainy days, much of it in thundery bursts in May and June. What matters is the roads beyond town. The tracks into Vashlovani and towards Chachuna are unpaved, and even a modest shower turns their clay into slick mud. Go with a 4x4 and a driver who knows the routes, check with the park office first, and keep a spare spring day.

Dedoplistskaro weather: FAQ
When is the best time to visit Vashlovani National Park?
April to early June and September to October. Dedoplistskaro, the gateway town, sees about 16 to 25 °C (61 to 77 °F) by day then, and the semi-desert is either flowering or past its summer heat. July and August are very hot on the badlands, and after heavy rain or snow the dirt tracks can be impassable for days. Look at Dedoplistskaro weather by month before you fix dates.
Does Dedoplistskaro get snow in winter?
Yes, more than you might expect in Kakheti. Snow arrives in most years, chiefly between December and February, and a cold spell can keep it on the ground for a week or two, because the town sits higher (~800 m) and more exposed than the valley wine towns. January nights average about -3 °C (27 °F) and days about 5 °C (41 °F).
Is Khornabuji Fortress too hot to visit in summer?
At midday, yes for most people. July highs in town average about 30 °C (86 °F), and the limestone ridge has no shade at all. Go at sunrise or in the two hours before sunset, when the light is better anyway, and carry water. From mid-September the climb is comfortable at any time of day.
When do the steppe flowers bloom near Dedoplistskaro?
Usually in April and May, as days warm to about 16 to 21 °C (61 to 70 °F) and frequent light showers keep the ground moist. May is the wettest month, at about 92 mm. By late June the heat, with highs near 27 °C (81 °F), starts to turn the grassland brown.
