Lagodekhi Weather
Lagodekhi weather is greener and wetter than the rest of Kakheti. The town lies at ~430 m right under the main Caucasus ridge, which wrings about 974 mm of rain a year out of passing air. Summers are hot, peaking at about 32 °C (90 °F) in August, and winters mild, with January nights near 1 °C (33 °F) and almost no lasting snow in town. For the reserve's forest trails and waterfalls, May, September and October are the best months.

Rain and rain days come from Lagodekhi's own weather station (daily records 1955-1992, NOAA GHCN-Daily). Temperatures are estimated for this spot from 1991–2020 station averages and a 1 km climate model (CHELSA). Cloud cover: CHELSA 1981–2010. Daylight and sunrise are for the 15th of each month (Georgia keeps UTC+4 all year). A rain day has at least 1 mm.
Lagodekhi weather through the year
SpringMar–May
March is cool at 13 °C, and April, at 18 °C, is the cloudiest month (45%). Spring is the season of running water: rain builds to a May peak of about 126 mm, and snowmelt from the ridge feeds the streams, so the Ninoskhevi and Black Grouse waterfalls are at their fullest. Trails are muddy, so good boots matter more than a sun hat.
Highs 13° to 24° · lows 5° to 14° · 299 mm rain
SummerJun–Aug
June is hot (29 °C) and still wet, with about 118 mm. July and August are the hottest, clearest stretch: about 32 °C by day, 22 °C at night and rain on about seven days a month. The beech forest keeps the lower trails shaded, while up on the ridge it is far cooler. This is the main season for the multi-day walk up to Black Rock Lake on the Russian border.
Highs 29° to 32° · lows 19° to 22° · 291 mm rain
AutumnSep–Nov
September, at 27 °C, and October, at 21 °C, are among the best months: warm, mostly clear and colourful as the beech and hornbeam forest turns. Rain does not disappear, though, with about 90 mm in each month, so expect a wet day or two. By November highs fall to 13 °C, and snow usually begins to close the high routes.
Highs 13° to 27° · lows 6° to 17° · 253 mm rain
WinterDec–Feb
Winter weather in Lagodekhi town is mild: January highs average about 7 °C and lows 1 °C, and snow rarely settles at the reserve entrance. The lower forest trails stay open and quiet, while the upper reserve, rising to ~3,500 m, lies deep in snow. The driest months are December and January, with around 40 mm each, so short winter walks often get dry weather.
Highs 7° to 10° · lows 1° to 3° · 131 mm rain
Best time to visit Lagodekhi
The best time to visit Lagodekhi is May, for waterfalls in full flow, or September to mid-October, for warm, settled hiking weather and autumn colour. For the trek to Black Rock Lake, aim for July to September, when the high ridge is usually free of snow; the route is generally walked from June to October. July and August are hot in town, about 32 °C, but fine on the shaded forest trails if you start early. Lagodekhi weather by month shows winter as mild but suited to short, low walks only.
Behind the town the land climbs from ~590 m at the reserve edge to peaks near 3,500 m. Air pushed against that slope cools and drops its moisture, giving Lagodekhi more rain than any of its Kakheti neighbours and keeping the forest damp even in summer. For walkers, trails are often muddy and slippery for a day or two after rain, and streams rise quickly, so ask at the visitor centre about conditions before you set off.
What to pack for Lagodekhi
- Waterproof hiking boots for muddy forest trails
- Lightweight rain shell, even in July
- Quick-dry clothes and spare socks for stream crossings
- Warm layers for a night at the Black Rock Lake shelter
- Trekking poles for slick descents after rain
Lagodekhi weather: FAQ
When can you hike to Black Rock Lake from Lagodekhi?
Usually from June, once the snow clears, to early October, with July to September the safest window. The lake lies high on the main ridge, where snow lingers into summer and returns early in autumn, so it is far colder up there than the 32 °C (90 °F) August afternoons in town. Register at the visitor centre and ask about snow on the upper trail.
Is Lagodekhi too hot in August?
In town it is hot: the average August afternoon reaches about 32 °C (90 °F), and nights stay warm, near 22 °C (71 °F). Under the forest canopy it feels cooler, and the waterfall trails can be done before the worst heat. Start by 08:00, carry plenty of water and expect the odd afternoon thunderstorm.
When are the Lagodekhi waterfalls at their best?
In spring, especially May. That is the wettest month, with about 126 mm of rain, and snowmelt from the ridge adds to it, so the streams run high and loud. Autumn rain, about 90 mm a month in September and October, can top them up again. In midsummer the falls are thinner, but rainy days are fewer.
Can you visit Lagodekhi National Park in winter?
Yes, the lower trails. In town, January afternoons reach about 7 °C (45 °F) and nights fall to about 1 °C (33 °F), and the short forest walks stay possible on most days. The high routes, including Black Rock Lake, are snowbound and out of reach until early summer, so winter is for waterfall walks rather than treks.
