It is a quiet complex of churches and the ruins of the Ikalto Academy, one of medieval Georgia's main centres of learning. The main church, Khvtaeba, dates from the 8th to 9th centuries and stands on the site of an older church where St Zenon, the monastery's founder, was buried. Beside the roofless academy walls are the remains of a winepress building, a reminder that viticulture and winemaking were among the subjects taught here.
Ikalto is far less visited than Alaverdi, and that is part of its appeal. You can wander between the churches and the academy ruins in near silence, with views down to the Alazani Valley. Entry is free and a visit takes under an hour. It combines easily with Old and New Shuamta, Alaverdi or Telavi itself on the same day.
History
St Zenon, one of the Thirteen Assyrian Fathers, founded the monastery in the late 6th century. In 1106 Arsen Ikaltoeli, an adviser to King David IV the Builder, founded the academy, which taught theology, rhetoric, philosophy, astronomy, geometry, music, pharmacology, metalwork, and viticulture and winemaking. According to legend, the 12th-century poet Shota Rustaveli studied here. Persian troops of Shah Abbas I burned the academy in 1616, and it never reopened.
