Gergeti Trinity Church and Gergeti Glacier via the Sabertse Pass

Kazbegi's classic big day: up past the 14th-century Gergeti Trinity Church, over the Sabertse Pass and on to a viewpoint above the Gergeti Glacier at the foot of Mount Kazbek (5,054 m). About 20 km and 1,500 m of climbing return from Stepantsminda, 8 to 10 hours.

Most visitors to Stepantsminda walk only as far as Gergeti Trinity Church, the lone stone church on its green spur at about 2,170 m. The path keeps going. Above the church it crosses wide summer pasture, climbs to the Sabertse Pass at roughly 2,950 m and then traverses a lateral moraine until the Gergeti Glacier spreads out below you, with the white cone of Kazbek directly above. It is the most rewarding single day of walking in the Kazbegi area and the first part of the normal route to the Kazbek summit.

The trail is clear and mostly easy to follow in good weather, but it is long. From the town square you gain about 1,500 m and cover around 20 km there and back, and the upper half is above 2,800 m, where the air is thinner and the weather changes quickly. Fit walkers manage it in 8 to 10 hours. If you take a 4x4 up to the church, you cut about 7 km and 430 m of ascent, which brings the day down to 6 to 7 hours.

The glacier itself is not a place to wander on without equipment. Our route stops at a viewpoint on the moraine, around 3,150 to 3,200 m, before the trail drops onto the ice. Crossing the glacier toward the Bethlemi hut belongs to the Kazbek climb and needs crampons, a rope and a guide.

Cross the Tergi on the bridge to Gergeti village and follow the lanes uphill to the edge of the forest. The old footpath climbs in short, steep zigzags through birch and pine and cuts across the hairpins of the paved church road several times. It is dusty in summer and greasy after rain. You come out on the grassy saddle below the church with the whole Tergi valley behind you.

Behind the church a broad track heads north across open pasture, gently at first and then more steeply as it bends right onto the ridge. Several parallel paths have been worn by horses and hikers; keep to the main one. There is no shade at all. The last stretch to the pass is a steady pull up a grassy shoulder, and at the top Kazbek and the glacier appear together for the first time. Many walkers turn back here, which is a perfectly good day.

The trail continues along the crest of a lateral moraine, loose underfoot in places, with the glacier tongue on your left. Stop at a safe vantage point on the moraine before the path drops to the ice. Do not step onto the glacier: crevasses are hidden under gravel and snow even late in summer, and stones fall from the moraine walls in the afternoon.

Retrace your steps over the pass and down the pasture to the church. The descent is hard on knees, and poles help. From the church either walk the forest path back to town or take a jeep from the car park.

Practical information

Getting there

Stepantsminda lies roughly 155 km from Tbilisi by the Military Road, a drive of 3 to 3.5 hours. Minibuses leave Didube bus station in Tbilisi through the morning, roughly hourly in summer, and cost about 15 to 20 GEL (about $6 to $7) in 2026, cash only. A seat in a shared taxi from Didube runs about 40 to 60 GEL (about $15 to $22), and a private car with driver one way costs about 220 to 350 GEL (about $80 to $130). To save the first 430 m of climbing, take a 4x4 from the Stepantsminda square to the church car park: about 50 to 80 GEL (about $19 to $30) per car return, or about 15 to 20 GEL (about $6 to $7) per seat when shared.

Getting back

The route returns the same way. The last minibuses to Tbilisi usually leave Stepantsminda between 16:00 and 18:00, so on a long glacier day plan to sleep in Stepantsminda or Gergeti, or book a driver for the evening. Jeeps wait at the church car park until early evening if your knees want a ride down the final stretch.

Water

Fill up in Stepantsminda. There is no reliable spring between the church and the Sabertse Pass, so carry 2 to 3 litres. Beyond the pass the streams are glacial melt, cloudy with silt: filter or treat before drinking, or bring enough for the whole day.

Phone signal

Mobile coverage is good in Stepantsminda, at the church and along most of the open slope to the pass, because the hillside faces the town. On the far side of the pass and near the glacier it becomes patchy. Magti usually holds the signal longest. Download an offline map before you leave.

Nearest help

Stepantsminda has a small clinic and the Kazbegi National Park visitor centre. Call 112 for police, ambulance or mountain rescue; it works without a local SIM. The nearest hospital with full services is in Tbilisi, about 3 hours away by road.

Permits

No permit and no fee for the walk inside Kazbegi National Park. Carry your passport anyway: Stepantsminda is about 11 km from the Russian border and police occasionally check papers on the Military Road. Gergeti Trinity Church is free; cover shoulders and knees, and women need a headscarf and skirt inside (wraps are lent at the gate).

Gear and safety

What to bring

  • Boots with a grippy sole; the forest path is slippery and the moraine is loose
  • Trekking poles for the 1,450 m descent
  • 2 to 3 litres of water and a filter or tablets
  • Windproof jacket, warm layer, hat and gloves even in August; the pass is often 15 degrees colder than the town
  • Sun hat, sunglasses and strong sun cream; there is no shade above the church
  • Headtorch in case the day runs late
  • Offline map with the route downloaded

Stay safe

  • Start early, ideally on the trail by 7:00. Cloud usually builds over Kazbek by late morning in summer, and thunderstorms are common after 14:00 in July and August. If you hear thunder, leave the ridge and the pass at once.
  • Stay off the glacier. Its surface hides crevasses, and every year walkers in trainers have to be helped off the ice.
  • Altitude: you climb from 1,740 m to about 3,200 m in one morning. A mild headache is common; strong headache, nausea or dizziness mean turn around.
  • Horses and their riders share the path above the church. Step to the uphill side to let them pass.
  • Shepherd dogs guard flocks on the pastures in summer. Give flocks a wide berth; if a dog rushes at you, stand still, face it calmly and let the herder deal with it.
  • In an emergency call 112. Tell them you are on the Gergeti glacier trail above Stepantsminda and give your GPS position if you can.
Shorter, longer and bad-weather options
  • Church only: Stepantsminda to Gergeti Trinity Church and back is about 7 km, 430 m up, 3 to 4 hours, difficulty 2. It is possible from April to November in dry weather and is the best choice when the high ground is in cloud.
  • Sabertse Pass only: turn back at the pass. From the church car park it is about 10 km return and 800 m of ascent, 4 to 5 hours.
  • Overnight: camp below the Sabertse Pass or near the glacier and return the next morning, when the light on Kazbek is better and the clouds have not yet formed. Bring all water treatment and a warm sleeping bag; nights drop below freezing.
  • Bad weather swap: the Truso valley walk stays lower (about 2,000 to 2,250 m) and is less exposed to storms; Gveleti waterfall in the Dariali gorge is a 1-hour walk from the road for a short rainy day.
  • Longer: the Kazbek climb continues from the glacier to the Bethlemi hut at about 3,650 m and on to the 5,054 m summit, which is a guided mountaineering trip of several days.

Emergency number in Georgia: 112. Tell your guesthouse your plan before you set off.
