Stepantsminda to Gergeti Trinity Church Walk
Kazbegi's favourite short hike: up from Stepantsminda through Gergeti village and the forest to the 14th-century Trinity Church on its saddle (around 2,170 m), facing the 5,054 m cone of Kazbek. Roughly 7 km return with 430 m of climbing, 2.5 to 4 hours.
Path to Gergeti Trinity ChurchPhoto: georgia.travelIf you only walk once in Kazbegi, walk to the church. Gergeti Trinity Church sits by itself on a grassy saddle 430 m above Stepantsminda, and from the town square you can see exactly where you are heading. The route goes through the old village of Gergeti, then climbs a steep forest path that cuts across the bends of the paved road. At the top you get the church, its bell tower, the whole Tergi valley below and, on a clear morning, the glacier-covered cone of Kazbek straight ahead.
It is graded 2 on our scale because of the gradient rather than the distance. The climb is only about 3.5 km each way, but most of the height comes in one stretch of tight, rocky zigzags that turn slick after rain or snow. Fit walkers reach the church in about an hour; with stops for photos, allow 1.5 hours up. Families with children who are used to hills manage it well.
There are two ways to make it easier. You can ride a 4x4 up the paved road and walk down, which saves your lungs, or do the opposite and save your knees. The road was paved in the late 2010s, so any ordinary car can reach the car park in dry weather, although local drivers still use 4x4s and the bends are sharp.
This walk is also the first leg of our Gergeti Glacier trail. That route carries on north from the church over open pasture to the Sabertse Pass and the moraine above the glacier, a full 8 to 10 hour day graded 4. If you are not sure you are ready for it, walk to the church first and look up the valley: you will see most of the path.

From the square, cross the bridge over the Tergi and climb into Gergeti on the far bank. Lanes between stone houses and guesthouses lead uphill; keep heading toward the church on the skyline and you will not go far wrong. Dogs doze in the street and are used to walkers.
01Forest zigzags to the churchTop of Gergeti village → Gergeti Trinity Church · ~2 km · 0.75-1 h
Above the last houses the path enters a band of birch and pine and climbs in short, steep bends, crossing the asphalt road several times. Several shortcuts have been worn into the slope: they all go to the same place, but the main path is the least eroded. The trees open out onto a grassy shoulder, and a final gentle stretch brings you to the church gate with Kazbek behind it.
01At the church and back downGergeti Trinity Church → Stepantsminda main square · ~3.5 km · 1-1.5 h
Spend half an hour or more at the top. Walk round the wall for the view down the valley, step inside if you are dressed for it, and wander a few minutes north on the open ridge for the classic photo of the church with Kazbek behind. Go down the same path, slowly on the loose sections, or take a 4x4 from the car park.
Practical information
Getting there
From Tbilisi the drive up the Military Road to Stepantsminda covers roughly 155 km and takes 3 to 3.5 hours. Minibuses (marshrutkas) depart from Didube several times each morning; a seat was 15 to 20 GEL in 2026 (roughly $6 to $7), paid in cash to the driver. Hiring a car and driver for the one-way trip runs to roughly 220 to 350 GEL in 2026 (around $80 to $130). On foot, you set off from the town square, cross the river into Gergeti and keep climbing through the village.
Getting back
Walk down the same way in 45 minutes to an hour. If your knees have had enough, 4x4 drivers wait at the church car park and ask for a fare per seat for the ride down (see the FAQ for 2026 prices), or you can arrange a whole car in advance. The last marshrutkas back to Tbilisi usually leave between 16:00 and 18:00, so a day trip by public transport needs an early bus up.
Water
Buy water in Stepantsminda before you set off; there are shops on the main square. There is no dependable spring on the forest path, and the small stalls near the church car park are not always open. Half a litre to 1 litre per person is enough on a cool day, more in July and August.
Phone signal
Good almost all the way. The path climbs a slope that faces the town, so Magti, Silknet and Cellfie usually all work, including at the church.
Nearest help
Stepantsminda, at the bottom of the path, has a small clinic, police and the Kazbegi National Park visitor centre. Dial 112 for any emergency. The paved road reaches the church car park, so a vehicle can get to you quickly if you are hurt near the top.
Permits
No permit and no ticket. Gergeti Trinity Church is free to enter, and donations are welcome. It is a working church, so keep shoulders and knees covered; inside, women should also have a skirt on and their hair covered (the gate usually lends wraps and scarves). Men take hats off. Photography is not allowed inside. Keep your passport with you, as anywhere this close to the Russian border.
Gear and safety
What to bring
- Footwear with deep tread: light boots or trail shoes, since the zigzags are dusty in August and greasy after rain
- Microspikes or crampons from November to April, when the zigzags hold packed snow and ice
- To enter the church: long trousers for men, and for women a skirt or wrap plus a headscarf
- Wind jacket or warm layer: the saddle is exposed and cooler than the town
- Sun hat and sun cream; there is little shade above the forest
- Trekking poles help on the way down
Stay safe
- The path is slippery when wet and icy in winter. Take the road or a 4x4 if conditions are bad.
- On summer days Kazbek tends to vanish into cloud before noon, and July and August bring thunder in many afternoons. Set off early for the view and be off the open saddle if a storm builds.
- Cars and 4x4s use the paved road quickly; take care each time the path crosses it.
- Do not wander onto the slopes north of the church in poor visibility; the open pasture has no markings and it is easy to lose the way back.
- Emergency number: 112.
- Easiest: take a 4x4 or taxi both ways and spend an hour at the church. Good for anyone who cannot manage 430 m of climbing.
- Half and half: ride up and walk down, or walk up and ride down, about 1 to 1.5 hours on foot.
- Longer: continue from the church across the pasture toward the Sabertse Pass and the Gergeti Glacier. Turning round at the pass makes the extra leg roughly 10 km there and back with some 800 m more climbing; the full glacier day is on our gergeti-glacier trail page.
- Rainy day: the Gveleti waterfalls in the Dariali gorge, 15 minutes north by car, are a short walk that does not need a view.
- Next day: the Truso valley or the Juta valley, both easy to reach from Stepantsminda by car.
Emergency number in Georgia: 112. Tell your guesthouse your plan before you set off.

Stepantsminda to Gergeti Trinity Church Walk: FAQ
How many hours should I allow for the Gergeti church hike?
From the square, the walk up usually takes between 60 and 90 minutes; the descent is faster. With time at the top, budget 2.5 to 4 hours in total.
Is the hike to Gergeti Trinity Church difficult?
The distance is small, the gradient is not: you gain some 430 m over roughly 3.5 km, much of it on stony zigzags under the trees. A steady pace gets anyone of ordinary fitness to the top. In wet or icy weather it is much harder, and the road is a better choice.
How much is a 4x4 to Gergeti Trinity Church?
Drivers on the square quoted 20 to 25 GEL a person for a shared seat in 2026 (roughly $7 to $9). For your own vehicle, up and down with the driver waiting, reckon on 60 to 100 GEL in 2026 (around $22 to $37). Settle the fare first.
What should I wear to visit Gergeti Trinity Church?
Cover your shoulders and knees. Women should wear a skirt and a headscarf inside the church; wraps are usually available free at the entrance. Wear proper shoes for the walk itself.
