Balda Canyon is a small limestone gorge on the Abasha River, about 11 km north of Martvili near the village of Meore Balda. Protected as a natural monument since 2013, it is about 1.4 km long, 25 to 30 m deep and in places only 5 to 10 m wide. The water is a vivid blue-green and very cold, running between pale, moss-covered walls. It lies close to Balda Monastery of the Dormition, and it sees far fewer visitors than Martvili Canyon, about 6 km downstream. The forested hills around the village make it feel greener and wilder.

The area around Balda is good walking country. A marked trail of about 6 km leads from Pirveli Balda to the Oniore Waterfall and the Toba cave, at about 680 m, in roughly 1.5 hours. The same protected area includes other karst sights, such as the tall Ochkhomuri Waterfall near the village of Kurzu. With a car, you can combine Balda with Martvili Canyon and Martvili Monastery for a full day around Martvili.
