Best time to visit Martvili
The best time to visit Martvili Canyon is May, September or October. Highs are a comfortable 22 to 27 °C, and these months get less rain than June and July, so boat trips are more likely to run. Arrive when the site opens to beat both the tour buses and the afternoon heat. Summer works if you plan flexibly around downpours, while winter is mild but often wet and grey.
Rain decides whether the boats run. Martvili weather by month has no truly dry season, with every month getting more than 115 mm, and the canyon's boat rides are usually paused during rain and while the river runs high afterwards. Keep your plans flexible: go on the driest morning of your stay, and ask at the visitor centre in Inchkhuri if a storm passed overnight.
What to pack for Martvili

- Shoes with grip for wet canyon walkways
- Quick-dry clothes for hot, sticky summer days
- Waterproof pouch for your phone on the boat
Martvili weather: FAQ
Do the boats at Martvili Canyon run in the rain?
Usually not. Boat rides are normally suspended during rain and while the river is high after a storm. June and July, with around 180 mm of rain each, see the most interruptions, while May and September are the most reliable. Ask at the visitor centre on the day, and have a backup such as Martvili Monastery.
What is the best month to visit Martvili Canyon?
May or September. Both have highs around 24 to 27 °C (75 to 81 °F), less rain than early summer and clearer skies, with September the clearest month at about 30 percent cloud. October is a close third, still around 22 °C (72 °F) and quieter.
Is Martvili Canyon worth visiting in winter?
It can be, if you like quiet. Afternoons are mild, around 10 °C (50 °F), nights stay just above freezing and snow is rare, but rain falls on 12 or 13 days a month. Pick a dry day and combine the canyon with Martvili Monastery and Nokalakevi.
How hot is Martvili in summer?
July and August afternoons touch about 30 °C (86 °F), with nights near 19 to 20 °C (66 to 68 °F), and the humid air makes it feel sticky. Visit the canyon in the morning, before the heat builds, and remember that swimming there is forbidden, so do not plan on a cooling dip.
