Daylight and sunrise are for the 15th of each month (Georgia keeps UTC+4 all year). A rain day has at least 1 mm.

Lentekhi weather through the year

SpringMar–May

March is mild by day, about 11 °C, but still frosty at night, and a late snowfall is possible. April warms to 16 °C and is wet, about 120 mm, while May reaches 21 °C with rain on 12 days. The Zagar Pass stays closed until late May or June, so spring is a time for the valley itself: Tsageri, village churches and blossom.

SummerJun–Aug

Summer is the most settled season, and the weather in Lentekhi then is warm: highs run from 26 °C to about 29 °C, nights from 14 to 17 °C, and August has the clearest skies, at about 23 percent cloud. August is also wetter than July here, about 120 mm against 100 mm, so allow for the odd wet day. This is the season for crossing the Zagar Pass to Ushguli by 4x4.

AutumnSep–Nov

September is the driest month and the pick for many: around 91 mm of rain, warm afternoons near 25 °C and nights about 13 °C, and the Racha-Lechkhumi Wine Festival falls in that month. October cools to 19 °C. In November highs drop to about 12 °C, nights hover near freezing and rain picks up to about 127 mm.

Best time to visit Lentekhi

JFMAMJJASOND
Best weatherGoodLess pleasant or closed

The best time to visit Lentekhi is May to September, with May, June, August and September the most comfortable for walking around the valley. If you plan to cross the Zagar Pass to Ushguli, aim for July to September, when the road has been open for several weeks and is at its most reliable. September adds the regional wine festival, cooler nights and the driest weather of the year. Avoid winter unless you want a quiet, snowy village.

Local weather tip

The Zagar Pass is the big seasonal question here. This rough road climbs from the Tskhenistskali valley over the ridge into Upper Svaneti and down to Ushguli, and snow shuts it for much of the year. Between 2022 and 2025 it usually opened in late May or June, and snow closed it again sometime between the end of October and early December. Drive it only by 4x4, and expect temperatures to fall by about 8 °C between Lentekhi and Ushguli.

What to pack for Lentekhi

  • Light clothes for 29 °C summer days in the valley
  • Warm layer for the Zagar Pass and Ushguli
  • Rain jacket for wet April, November and December
  • Winter boots for snowy spells from December to February

Lentekhi weather: FAQ

When is the Zagar Pass open?

Usually from late May or June until somewhere between late October and early December, going by the 2022 to 2025 seasons. Opening depends on how much snow fell and how fast it melts, so check with drivers in Lentekhi or Ushguli before you go. Even in midsummer the road calls for a 4x4 and a driver who knows it.

Is Lentekhi warmer than Mestia?

Much warmer. Lentekhi lies about 740 m lower, so August afternoons reach about 29 °C (84 °F) while Mestia manages 24 °C (75 °F). In January, Lentekhi nights are near -4 °C (25 °F) rather than -7 °C (19 °F). Snow here comes and goes, while Mestia usually stays white from about November to March.

Does Lentekhi get snow?

Yes. Snow arrives in most winters, chiefly between December and February, and each spell can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Expect January afternoons of about 5 °C (41 °F) and nights around -4 °C (25 °F). December is the wettest month, around 142 mm, and on cold nights some of that falls as snow.

Is September a good month for Lentekhi?

Yes. It is the driest month, about 91 mm, with highs about 25 °C (77 °F), nights about 13 °C (55 °F) and rain on around nine days. The Zagar Pass is still open, the Racha-Lechkhumi Wine Festival takes place in the region, and the valley is quieter than in August.
