Mazeri weather through the year

SpringMar–May

In a typical year the village keeps its snow until about late March, and the weather in Mazeri stays raw well into spring. March highs are only about 6 °C and nights still freeze. April and May warm to 10 and 15 °C but bring 12 to 13 rainy days each, and meltwater fills the streams coming off Ushba. Spring suits quiet village walks rather than glacier hikes.

Highs 6° to 15° · lows −4° to 5° · 252 mm rain

SummerJun–Aug

June is green but the wettest month, about 111 mm. July and August are the time to come: highs around 23 °C, nights about 11 °C, and cloud cover near 27 to 29 percent, which gives the best odds of seeing Ushba clear. Mornings are usually the clearest part of the day, so start the Shdugra or Ushba glacier trail early.

Highs 20° to 23° · lows 8° to 11° · 314 mm rain

AutumnSep–Nov

Mazeri weather by month is at its steadiest in early autumn. September brings highs about 19 °C and nights near 7 °C, with the first yellow leaves along the river. October cools to around 14 °C with frost on some nights, and November brings highs near 6 °C and the return of snow to the valley floor.

Highs 6° to 19° · lows −2° to 7° · 283 mm rain

WinterDec–Feb

Winter in the Becho valley is snowy and grey, with half the sky clouded over in February. Highs sit around 0 to 2 °C and lows near -7 °C. Ushba can hide behind cloud for days at a time. The village is very quiet, and the road from Mestia can be slow after fresh snow, so a 4x4 driver is the sensible choice.

Best time to visit Mazeri

JFMAMJJASOND
Best weatherGoodLess pleasant or closed

The best time to visit Mazeri is July and August for hikers heading to Shdugra waterfall or the Ushba glacier, as the snow has cleared from the upper path and Ushba shows itself more often. Early September is calmer and still fairly dry. In June the river crossing on the waterfall path runs high with meltwater, so check conditions in the village. Winter suits only a snowy, restful stay.

Local weather tip

Cloud around Ushba shapes most visits. The mountain's double summit rises straight above the village and often gathers its own cloud by late morning, even when the valley floor stays bright. In July and August average cloud cover drops below 30 percent, while in February it reaches half the sky. If the view matters, stay a night and be on the trail at first light.

What to pack for Mazeri

  • Water shoes or spare socks for the river crossing
  • Rain jacket against waterfall spray and showers
  • Warm layer for 11 °C summer evenings
  • Trekking poles for the steep Shdugra path
  • Headlamp for dawn starts to catch Ushba clear

Mazeri weather: FAQ

When is the Shdugra waterfall hike possible?

Usually from late June to September, once snow clears from the upper path. July and August are the most reliable, with highs around 23 °C (73 °F). The trail includes a river crossing that runs highest with snowmelt in early summer and on warm afternoons, so start early and ask in Mazeri about water levels.

Is Mazeri colder than Mestia?

A little. Being about 160 m higher, Mazeri averages summer highs of about 23 °C (73 °F), a degree below Mestia's 24 °C (75 °F). It also collects more rain and snow, about 1,080 mm a year compared with 970 mm, though both are usually white from about November to March.

How much snow does Mazeri get in winter?

Enough to keep the ground white in a typical winter from about November to March, with drifts lasting longer on the trails above. Monthly precipitation in winter is modest, roughly 60 to 95 mm, but with daytime highs around 0 °C (32 °F) and nights near -7 °C (19 °F) it stays put. Expect snowy tracks and few services.

What is Mazeri like in September?

Calm and settled. September has the fewest rainy days of the year, about nine, with highs near 19 °C (66 °F) and nights around 7 °C (45 °F). The trails are quieter than in August, the river crossing is usually lower, and Ushba is often clear in the mornings.
