Green hills come down almost to the shore behind a pebble beach about 1 km long. The water here is usually clearer than in Batumi, which makes Kvariati popular with swimmers and snorkellers. The beach is backed by guesthouses, small hotels and cafes, and sun loungers and umbrellas can be rented in summer, yet it stays quieter than the city beaches.
The shore shelves steeply and the stones are large at the water's edge, so wear water shoes and keep a close eye on children. Kvariati is busy on summer weekends but calm on weekday mornings. Pair a morning at Gonio Fortress with an afternoon on the beach, or continue a few kilometres to Sarpi at the Turkish border, which has its own beach.
