- For a first visit, sleep near the Colchis Fountain or the White Bridge, a short walk from Bagrati Cathedral, the bazaar and the museum.
- Family guesthouses set the tone. In 2026 expect about 50-100 GEL (about $19-38) for a guesthouse double, about 80-180 GEL (about $31-69) in a small central hotel and from about 150 GEL (about $58) for a boutique room.
- The airport, ~20-25 km west by road, has no hotel. A shuttle, a Bolt or a booked car reaches town in 30 to 40 minutes at any hour.
- Landing after midnight? Book the room from the evening before, and send the host your flight number.
Where to stay in Kutaisi is an easy choice for most trips. Pick the compact centre around the Colchis Fountain, or the old lanes by the White Bridge, and the cathedral, the market and the river are all on foot. Choose the slopes below Bagrati for a family guesthouse with a view, or Tskaltubo for a spa hotel near the caves. The airport sits in farmland at Kopitnari with almost nowhere to sleep, so even a 02:00 landing ends best in town.
Each of the six areas below gets one checklist: its feel, the walk to the sights, slopes, noise, typical rooms and a rough 2026 price for two. Our Kutaisi travel guide covers the sights, and the Kutaisi airport guide covers every bus from the terminal. Prices were checked in October 2026.
Where to stay in Kutaisi: the quick answer by traveller type
Kutaisi is small. Its old core runs for about a kilometre along both banks of the Rioni.
- First visit of one to three nights: the streets around the Colchis Fountain and Central Park, or the river lanes by the White Bridge.
- Views and a home-cooked breakfast: a family guesthouse on Ukimerioni Hill, below Bagrati Cathedral.
- Spa days and caves: Tskaltubo, 15 to 20 minutes from town by car.
- A hire car or a minibus day: the main roads near the central bus station, where parking is easier.
- A dawn flight with your own car: a roadside guesthouse near the airport. Everyone else should sleep in town.

Central Kutaisi: the Colchis Fountain and Central Park
The city turns around one square. In its middle stands the Colchis Fountain of 2012, covered with about 30 gilded copies of ancient finds from Vani. The Meskhishvili Theatre and the opera house face it, and Central Park, a shady boulevard where locals have gathered to talk for some 150 years, leads in. Many small hotels and rented flats lie within a few hundred metres.
- On foot: the Green Bazaar and the Kutaisi State Historical Museum in a few minutes, the White Bridge in 5 to 10, and Bagrati Cathedral in 15 to 20, uphill.
- Transport: the airport shuttle ends by the Red Bridge, about 500 m away.
- Hills and noise: flat. Main streets and summer terraces stay loud late, so ask for a room at the back.
- Stays: small hotels, guesthouses, flats and a few bigger hotels with a lift and a night desk, about 80-300 GEL (about $31-115).
- Suits: first visits, one-night stops and anyone without a car.
The Jewish quarter and the White Bridge: old Kutaisi by the Rioni
Two old neighbourhoods face each other across the water. On the centre's bank, the Jewish quarter fills the lanes where the Rioni curves below Bagrati. Jewish families are recorded here from at least 1644, and the largest of the quarter's three synagogues, from 1886, stands on Gaponov Street.
Downstream, the White Bridge leads to the right bank. A first bridge went up here in 1850, and the iron span you cross today dates from the 1870s. Beyond it, two-storey houses with wooden balconies hang over the river.
- On foot: the fountain in 5 to 10 minutes, the old cable car up to the hilltop park, and Bagrati up the slope.
- Hills and noise: gentle slopes and calm evenings once the bridge empties.
- Stays: guesthouses in restored family houses, small boutique hotels and flats, about 60-250 GEL (about $23-96).
- Suits: couples and photographers travelling light, as some lanes are stepped.
Ukimerioni Hill: guesthouses with views below Bagrati Cathedral
Bagrati Cathedral, dated 1003 by an inscription in its floor, crowns Ukimerioni Hill on the right bank. The broken walls of the old royal citadel lie beside it. The streets winding up to the church hold many of the city's family guesthouses: lived-in homes with three or four spare rooms, a garden and a terrace over the rooftops.
- On foot: Bagrati in a few minutes, and the centre in 10 to 20 minutes downhill over the river.
- Hills and noise: steep, so every walk home ends with a climb. Nights are very quiet.
- Stays: family guesthouses and a few small hotels with views, about 50-200 GEL (about $19-77).
- Suits: travellers who want a host, a view and silence.
The cathedral grounds are free and usually open until about 21:00 (2026), so sunset is a short stroll from your door.
Near Kutaisi bus station and the Kutaisi-1 and Kutaisi-2 train stations
None of the city's stations is central. Kutaisi-1 sits on Tamar Mepe Street, ~1.3 km south-east of the fountain. Kutaisi-2 lies ~3.3 km south-west, across the river on Chavchavadze Avenue, next to the central bus station.
Do not book here for the trains. In 2026 the fast Tbilisi to Batumi trains stop near Kutaisi only at the airport's own halt, and the city stations see just a few slow local trains. The bus station matters more: most long-distance minibuses leave from Chavchavadze Avenue 67, including Tbilisi every 30 to 40 minutes and Mestia once a day at about 10:00.
- On foot: shops, no sights. From Kutaisi-1 the fountain is 15 to 20 minutes away; from the bus station, take a taxi.
- Hills and noise: flat, with traffic on the main roads.
- Stays: plain hotels with parking, guesthouses and flats, about 50-180 GEL (about $19-69).
- Suits: drivers with a hire car and travellers on a morning minibus.
Tskaltubo: a spa-town base near Prometheus Cave
Tskaltubo lies ~10 km north-west of the centre. Its warm radon water, 33 to 35°C at the source, made it one of the USSR's famous spas. Grand pillared bathhouses and sanatoriums circle a big park. A few are restored hotels and many stand empty. Since 1993 some have been homes for families displaced from occupied Abkhazia, so admire them from the street.
- On foot: the spa park and its bathhouses, including Bathhouse No. 6, which was built for Stalin in 1950.
- By car: Prometheus Cave in about 10 minutes, Sataplia and central Kutaisi in 15 to 20, and the airport in about 30.
- By bus: lines 30, 34 and 44 run to Kutaisi every 15 to 20 minutes from about 07:15 to 19:00, for about 2 GEL (about $1) in 2026.
- Stays: guesthouses and simple hotels from about 70 GEL (about $27), and restored spa hotels with pools and treatments at about 250-400 GEL (about $96-154).
- Suits: spa breaks, families with a car and early starts at the caves. Restaurants are few.
Kutaisi airport hotels and night arrivals at Kopitnari
David the Builder Kutaisi International Airport stands beside the village of Kopitnari. The terminal has no hotel of its own. The closest beds are a handful of guesthouses and roadside hotels along the highway towards Samtredia, mostly 10 to 15 minutes' drive away. Around them is open farmland, and you still need a car to reach the terminal.
Night landings are routine. Over a month from mid-October 2026, 131 of 369 scheduled arrivals were due between midnight and 06:00. Town is only 30 to 40 minutes away, so a central room still wins.
Landing at 02:00: a plan that works
- Book the right date
A 02:00 landing on 15 May needs the room for the night of 14 May. Book only the night of the 15th, and at 02:00 the room is not yet yours. - Agree how you get in
Send the flight number and ask how late arrivals work: a host who waits up, a key box with a code, or a night desk. Get it in writing, with a location pin and a picture of the gate. - Choose the ride
The airport shuttle leaves every two hours on the odd hours and ends by the Red Bridge. A seat cost about 5 GEL (about $2) in 2026, paid by card only. A Bolt into town costs about 25-30 GEL (about $10-12), and a private transfer waits however late you land. - Sleep, then start slowly
Gelati, Motsameta and Sataplia all lie within ~11 km of the centre, so a late afternoon still covers two of them.
Kutaisi hotels, guesthouses and apartments: what to expect
Geostat counted 288 hotels and similar places to stay in Imereti in 2025, about one in ten of the country's 2,783. Nationwide, two in three belong to individual owners, and most Kutaisi places are family-run, with a handful of rooms.
| Stay type | Typical price per night, 2026 | Where you find most of them |
|---|---|---|
| Hostel bed | about 20-40 GEL (about $8-15) | The centre |
| Family guesthouse, double | about 50-100 GEL (about $19-38) | Ukimerioni Hill, the river quarters, Tskaltubo |
| Apartment | about 70-180 GEL (about $27-69) | The centre, the station areas |
| Small hotel, double | about 80-180 GEL (about $31-69) | The centre, the White Bridge, the station areas |
| Boutique or upper-range hotel, double | about 150-450 GEL (about $58-173) | The centre, the White Bridge |
| Spa hotel, double | about 250-400 GEL (about $96-154) | Tskaltubo |
Guesthouse breakfasts and Imeretian hosts
In a family guesthouse, breakfast is the star: warm Imeruli khachapuri, the round cheese bread born in this region, with fresh cheese, cornbread, eggs and jam. Ask whether it is included. Many hosts cook dinner on request and pour their own light white wine. Some speak little English, but most know a reliable driver.
Heating in winter, cooling in summer
Winters are mild but damp, with January nights near 4°C, and old houses feel chilly indoors. Between November and March, ask how the room is heated: central heating, a gas heater or an air conditioner that blows warm air. In July, with highs near 29°C, ask about air conditioning instead.
Kutaisi as a base for Gelati, Motsameta, Prometheus, Martvili and Okatse
Two or three nights in one bed let you fan out. Every sight below is a drive, not a walk, so the centre and Tskaltubo work equally well.
| Sight | From central Kutaisi | Drive | Handiest base |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gelati Monastery | ~11 km | about 20 min | Centre or Ukimerioni Hill |
| Motsameta Monastery | ~6 km | about 15 min | Centre |
| Sataplia | ~10 km | about 20 min | Centre or Tskaltubo |
| Prometheus Cave | ~20 km | 30-35 min | Tskaltubo, about 10 min away |
| Okatse Canyon | ~45 km | about 1 h 15 min | Centre or Tskaltubo |
| Martvili Canyon | ~45-50 km | about 1 h | Centre or Tskaltubo |
A city bus runs to Gelati five times a day, but nothing stops at the cave or canyon gates, so a driver saves hours of waiting.
Our private Kutaisi Caves and Monasteries Day Trip collects you in Kutaisi or Tskaltubo for Gelati, Motsameta, Sataplia and Prometheus Cave, for any number of people, on dates you pick.
For a full day outdoors, the Kutaisi Canyons Day Trip walks the Okatse cliff path, stops at Kinchkha Waterfall and ends in Martvili Canyon, with a boat ride when the river is calm.
Crossing the whole country? Our six-day East to West tour sleeps in Tbilisi, Kutaisi and Batumi, with a guide in your language.
When to book Kutaisi hotels, and other practical tips
- Check the walk, not the label: many listings call themselves central. Measure the route to the Colchis Fountain on a map before you pay.
- Stairs and slopes: on the hill and in the river lanes, ask where a taxi can stop and how many steps follow.
- Parking: many central places have none. With a hire car, choose a guesthouse with a yard or a hotel on a main road.
- Cash: some family guesthouses prefer lari in cash.
- Paperwork: border officers may check your travel insurance, compulsory for foreigners in 2026, with a limit of 30,000 GEL or higher.
When to book early
- July and August, Georgia's busiest travel months: book small boutique hotels a week or two ahead.
- Early May: Kutaisoba, the city festival, brings concerts and extra visitors.
- Cheapest: November to March, apart from the New Year week, when a day or two of notice usually works.
