Jvari Monastery stands on a rocky hilltop east of Mtskheta at 656 m, directly above the point where the Aragvi meets the Mtkvari. The name means 'cross'. According to tradition, St Nino raised a large wooden cross here in the 4th century, and the church was built over its base. The building is small and austere, with a central dome over four apses, and it became the model for a whole family of Georgian churches known as the Jvari type.

Most visitors come for the view as much as the church. From the terrace you look down on Mtskheta, Svetitskhoveli and the two rivers of different colours joining. Inside, the base of the cross still stands in the centre under the dome. Relief panels on the outer walls show the princes who paid for the building. Sunset is the best time for photographs, and early morning is the quietest.

History

A small church was built here around 545, beside the place where St Nino's cross was said to stand. The main church, the Church of the Holy Cross, followed between about 590 and 605, under the rulers of Kartli whose names appear in inscriptions on the facades. Its four-apse plan with a central dome was copied across Georgia for centuries. Jvari is part of the Historical Monuments of Mtskheta, inscribed by UNESCO in 1994.
