Best time to visit Poti

JFMAMJJASOND
Best: sea 24 °C or warmerGood: sea 21–24 °CCooler sea

The best time to visit Poti for the beach is July to September: the Black Sea off Poti averages 25-27 °C, and skies are clearer than almost anywhere else on the coast. For boat trips in Kolkheti National Park and on Paliastomi Lake, May, June and early October suit better: highs of 22-26 °C and less sticky air. Come in October for Phazisoba. April is the driest month for a city stop, though too cold for swimming.

Local weather tip

Much of the weather in Poti comes down to geography. The city lies only about 2 m above sea level on the flat delta of the Rioni, and its heaviest rain falls in late summer, roughly 25 mm on each rain day in August and September. A storm can leave streets awash and wetland tracks impassable for a while. Boat trips on Paliastomi Lake usually do not run in rough weather, so keep a spare day in your plan.

What to pack for Poti

  • A compact umbrella for heavy August and September storms
  • Insect repellent for boat trips into the wetlands
  • A sun hat for clear 29 °C August days
  • Quick-drying clothes for humid summer weather
  • A warm layer for 4 °C winter nights

Poti weather: FAQ

What is the rainiest month in Poti?

September, with about 270 mm, followed by August at about 257 mm and October at about 232 mm. In the Poti weather by month those totals fall on only 10-11 days, so rain comes in heavy bursts with clear spells between; September is also the least cloudy month. April is the driest, about 85 mm.

How warm is the sea at Poti in summer?

About 23 °C (73 °F) in June, 26 °C (78 °F) in July and nearly 27 °C (80 °F) in August, with September still near 25 °C (77 °F). For a beach day, many people head a short drive south to Grigoleti or Ureki, which share the same water temperatures and have sandy shores.

Does it snow in Poti?

Very rarely, and it does not last. January nights average about 4 °C (39 °F) and days about 11 °C (51 °F), so winter is mild and damp rather than cold. Rain is the bigger factor, with 12-14 wet days a month from December to March.

When is the best weather for Kolkheti National Park?

May, June and early October usually give the best mix: highs of 22-26 °C (72-79 °F), less rain than late summer and long enough days for a boat trip on Paliastomi Lake. July and August are hot, humid and stormy, and mosquitoes are busiest then. Winter trips are possible but often grey.
