The best time to visit Sarpi for swimming and snorkelling is late July to mid-September, with the water at its warmest, 25-27 °C. Early September is ideal, with warm water and fewer people than in August. Anyone simply crossing the border can come in any month; May is the driest, at about 96 mm of rain. After a storm, give the sea a day or two to settle before you snorkel, as the water is usually churned and cloudy.

Local weather tip

Sarpi is squeezed between the sea and steep wooded hills, and the beach shelves quickly into deep water. Here the weather in Sarpi shows up most in the sea itself: on calm summer days you can see the rocks well below you, while after a storm waves break hard on the steep shore and visibility drops for a while. Swim only when the sea is calm, keep children close and wear water shoes on the large stones.

What to pack for Sarpi

  • Mask and snorkel for the rocks near the frontier fence
  • Water shoes for big, steeply shelving stones
  • A compact umbrella for rainy waits at the crossing
  • Breathable clothes for muggy August days
  • A windproof jacket for stormy winter visits
