Chakvi Weather

Chakvi weather is shaped by the green wall of tea hills that rises straight behind its quiet pebble beach. Moist sea air gathers against those slopes, so July and August bring more cloud here than anywhere else on the Adjara coast, yet afternoons still reach close to 28 °C (82 °F). Winters are mild, with January nights near 4 °C (39 °F), and rain totals about 2,530 mm a year. It suits beach days mixed with forest walks.

Chakvi weather through the year

SpringMar–May

Spring is when the tea bushes on the slopes put out fresh green shoots. Afternoons warm from about 13 °C to 20 °C between March and May, and rain eases to about 108 mm in May, the driest month. It is the best season for Makhuntseti Waterfall, usually at its fullest after the wet winter, and for the Batumi Botanical Garden a short drive south. The sea is still cold at 10-17 °C.

Highs 13° to 20° · lows 6° to 13° · 407 mm rain · sea 10° to 17°

SummerJun–Aug

June has the clearest summer skies, about 36% cloud, and the sea averages about 23 °C. In July and August cloud cover rises to 43-44% as it gathers over the hills, though highs still reach 27-28 °C and the water is 26-27 °C. Expect about 11 rain days a month. On sticky afternoons the forest trails of Mtirala National Park give shade that the beach cannot.

Highs 24° to 28° · lows 18° to 21° · 538 mm rain · sea 23° to 27°

AutumnSep–Nov

September keeps the sea at about 25 °C and the air near 25 °C, but rain climbs to about 236 mm. October and November are wetter still, around 270-280 mm each, while highs ease from 22 °C to 17 °C. November brings the Late Harvest in Guria and Adjara, and the damp, mild air keeps the hillsides green well into winter.

Highs 17° to 25° · lows 9° to 18° · 787 mm rain · sea 17° to 25°

WinterDec–Feb

Winters are soft and very wet: about 322 mm falls in December, the peak of the year, and January has 15 rain days. Afternoons stay around 11-13 °C and nights around 4-6 °C, and snow seldom settles at sea level. The tracks into Mtirala get slippery and muddy, so save hikes for a dry spell and spend the wettest days in Batumi's museums.

Highs 11° to 13° · lows 4° to 6° · 796 mm rain · sea 10° to 14°

The Chakvi weather by month points to July to September as the best time to visit Chakvi for the beach, with the sea at 25-27 °C. For walking in Mtirala National Park, May and June suit better: highs of 20-24 °C and the clearest skies of the first half of the year, with May the driest month. Keda's wine villages up the valley are pleasant from May to October. Come in November for the Late Harvest festivities, and expect showers whenever you visit.

Local weather tip

The weather in Chakvi changes with height. Cloud tends to cling to the hills behind town and the famously damp Mtirala forest even when the beach below is bright, which is why the summer sky here averages 43-44% cloud, the most on the Adjara coast. Carry a rain layer on any forest walk, and do not count on wide views from the upper trails on a hazy August afternoon.

What to pack for Chakvi

  • Waterproof walking shoes for muddy Mtirala trails
  • A light rain shell, even in May
  • Swimwear and water shoes for the pebble beach
  • Repellent for summer walks among the tea bushes
  • A warm layer for damp 4 °C winter nights

Chakvi weather: FAQ

Is Chakvi cloudier than Batumi?

A little, in summer. July and August average 43-44% cloud cover in Chakvi against about 40-41% in Batumi, because cloud collects over the tea hills behind the town. Yearly rain is almost identical at roughly 2,520-2,530 mm. Chakvi is a touch colder on winter nights, about 4 °C (39 °F) in January.

Can you hike in Mtirala National Park in the rain?

You can, but trails turn slippery and muddy, and with about 11 rain days a month even in summer, wet days are common. Check the forecast and pick the morning of a dry day. April and May have the least rain, about 108-131 mm, with highs of about 17-20 °C (62-69 °F).

What is the sea temperature in Chakvi in September?

About 25 °C (77 °F), barely cooler than in August, which makes September one of the best months for a swim. The air is pleasant too, with highs near 25 °C. The catch is rain: September brings about 236 mm, so fit beach time around the showers.

How cold is Chakvi in winter?

Mild by day and cool at night. January and February afternoons average about 11 °C (51 °F) and nights about 4 °C (39 °F). Snow is rare and melts quickly at sea level. Winter is mostly a question of rain, with 13-15 wet days a month and about 322 mm in December alone.
