- For a first stay, sleep in Stepantsminda itself, near the marshrutka stop, cash machines and 4x4 drivers.
- Pick the Gergeti side for the church path, Arsha or Sno for quiet with a car, and Juta only from about late June to September.
- In summer 2026 a guesthouse double costs about 100-180 GEL (about $40-70) and a mid-range hotel about 200-400 GEL (about $75-155).
- Book July and August weekends early. In winter, ask about heating and keep a spare day for Jvari Pass closures.
- Eat at your guesthouse at least once. Dinner adds about 30-50 GEL (about $12-19) each and brings khinkali, khabizgina and mountain cheese.
Where to stay in Kazbegi comes down to three things: a car or no car, how much you plan to hike, and the month. On a first visit, book a room in Stepantsminda, the town everyone calls Kazbegi. The marshrutka from Tbilisi stops on its main square, with shops and 4x4 drivers close by. Hikers do well on the Gergeti side, right under the church path. Drivers can try the quiet villages of Arsha and Sno, and summer trekkers can sleep up in Juta.
Each base below gets the same checks: the feel, the views, the walk to the square, winter access, stay types and a rough 2026 price. Gudauri, ~35 km south over the Jvari Pass, is the ski-season choice. For sights and hikes, read our Kazbegi travel guide. For the drive up, see Tbilisi to Kazbegi. Prices were checked in October 2026.
Where to stay in Kazbegi: the quick answer by traveller type
Stepantsminda sits at ~1,740 m on the Tergi river, ~11 km short of the Russian border. Gergeti village faces it from the west bank, and farming villages line the main road to the south.
- First visit without a car: Stepantsminda centre. You step off the marshrutka and walk to your room.
- Hikers: the Gergeti side, where the path to Gergeti Trinity Church starts.
- Families with a car: Arsha or another village on the main road, for bigger rooms and silent nights.
- Summer trekkers: Sno, or Juta itself for sunrise under the Chaukhi peaks.
- Winter: the town centre, where everything is close without driving icy lanes. Skiers should look at Gudauri.
Stepantsminda centre: the square, shops and marshrutka stop
The centre is small: one main square, a few streets of shops, cafes and guesthouses, and newer hotels on the slopes above. It is plain rather than pretty, but it works. From the upper streets you look across the valley to the church on its ridge, with Kazbek behind.
- On foot: food shops, cash machines, the Alexander Kazbegi museum and the 4x4 drivers. The church path starts across the river, 15 to 25 minutes away.
- Winter: reachable whenever the Jvari Pass is open, and flatter than the Gergeti lanes.
- Stays: guesthouses, small hotels and the area's few large ones, including a big design hotel on the eastern slope. Expect about 100-400 GEL (about $40-155) for a double.
- Suits: first visits, travellers without a car and winter trips. Rooms on the main road hear lorries heading for the border.
Our private Tbilisi, Mountains & Wine trip spends one night in a Stepantsminda hotel with Kazbek outside the window. It runs on your dates, for a party of any size.
The Gergeti side: under the church path, across the Tergi
Gergeti village climbs the west bank, straight below the church. Many old stone houses now take guests, and timber cabins have gone up on the fields above. The lanes are steep, rough and partly unpaved.
- Views: the church stands right above you. Kazbek shows from the upper houses, though the ridge hides it from some lower ones.
- On foot: the path to the church, at 2,170 m, leaves from the village. The square is 15 to 25 minutes away over the bridge.
- Winter: the lanes ice over, and a taxi may not make it up. Ask whether your host can fetch you.
- Stays: guesthouse rooms go for about 100-180 GEL (about $40-70). Cabins and small eco-lodges cost more, about 200-400 GEL (about $75-155).
- Suits: hikers and early risers. Not ideal with heavy bags or knees that dislike slopes.
Arsha and the villages along the main road
South of town the Military Road passes a string of small villages: Arsha ~3 km out, then Sioni with its old basilica, then Kobi near the gondola base. Each has a few family guesthouses, with space, gardens and dark night skies instead of shops.
- Distance: Arsha is about 5 minutes by car from the square, Sioni about 15 and Kobi about 25. The marshrutka passes through, so ask the driver to stop.
- Winter: these villages sit on the main road, so you can reach them whenever it is open.
- Stays: a family guesthouse double is about 100-180 GEL (about $40-70).
- Suits: families with a car or driver.
Sno and the Juta valley: quiet bases for trekkers
Sno lies ~7 km south of the centre, just up the side road to Juta. It is a working farm village with stone towers, a few guesthouses and giant carved heads at its entrance. Juta, ~20 km from town and about 2,200 m up, faces the jagged Chaukhi wall.
- Getting there: about 10 minutes by car to Sno and 30 to 40 minutes to Juta. A landslide damaged the upper Juta road, so cars may stop short and a shuttle or a walk covers the rest.
- Winter: Sno usually stays reachable. Juta is snowbound from about November or December until May or June.
- Stays: Sno's guesthouses charge about 100-180 GEL (about $40-70). Juta has simple guesthouses, huts and tent camps from about late June to September, usually sold with meals.
- Suits: trekkers bound for Chaukhi or Truso, and anyone who wants silence. No marshrutka runs from town to Juta.
Our private Kazbegi Hiking Week keeps you in one Stepantsminda hotel for five nights. A driver and a mountain guide take you to Juta, Truso, Sno and the glacier viewpoint on the dates you choose.
Gudauri: the winter alternative south of the Jvari Pass
Gudauri is a ski resort at ~2,200 m, ~35 km south of Stepantsminda, or 40 to 50 minutes by car over the 2,379 m Jvari Pass. If skiing is the point, stay there: lifts, hire shops and ski schools are on the spot. Many hotels and restaurants work mainly in the snow season, and rates peak at New Year and in February.
Storms close the road on the 14 km from Gudauri to Kobi. Gudauri lies on the Tbilisi side, so it usually stays reachable when Kazbegi is cut off. Our guide to skiing in Gudauri compares its bases, and New Year in Gudauri covers the busiest week.

A guesthouse is usually a family home with a handful of rooms and breakfast included. The few large hotels add lifts, a restaurant, sometimes a pool, and terraces aimed at Kazbek. They fill first on summer weekends. For a tent, use a marked site, such as the campsite georgia.travel lists in the Dariali gorge.
Restaurants in Kazbegi and what to eat
Kazbegi is not a restaurant town. Most places to eat sit near the main square: a few cafes, restaurants with terraces facing the mountain, and hotel dining rooms. In the villages and Juta, your host's kitchen is usually the only choice.
- Khinkali: the mountain mtiuluri style, with chopped meat, onion and pepper and no green herbs. Expect about 1-2.5 GEL each in 2026.
- Khabizgina: a round, flat pie stuffed with potato mash and cheese. It came from Ossetian kitchens, and hosts here bake it often.
- Pkhlovani: a pie of greens and cheese, the easy pick for vegetarians.
- Mountain cheese: fresh farm cheese, and on some menus dambalkhacho, a mould-ripened curd cheese from the valleys further south.
- Lamb and mtsvadi: slow-cooked lamb or meat grilled on skewers, with a jug of house wine.
The guesthouse dinner habit
Most hosts cook for their guests, and it is often the best meal of the trip. Ask by lunchtime and mention any diet. Expect shared plates, bread, salad and home-made wine or chacha for about 30-50 GEL (about $12-19) a person, usually at 19:00 or 20:00.
In town, dinner for two with wine runs about 100-180 GEL (about $40-70). Many places add a service charge of 10-18%, so check the bill before you tip.
Winter tips, cash and when to book in Kazbegi
- Jvari Pass: the Gudauri to Kobi stretch closes in blizzards and avalanche danger. Over the last five winters, official notices closed it on between 10 and 17 days each winter, most of them from December to April. It was open on 26 October 2026. Check the road status before you leave, and keep a spare day.
- Heating and hot water: January nights drop to about -8°C. Ask what heats your room and whether it has its own boiler.
- Closed season: some village guesthouses and every Juta lodging close for the cold months, so confirm by message first.
- Cash: there are cash machines in Stepantsminda centre and Gudauri, but none in Sno, Juta or the side valleys. Guesthouses and 4x4 drivers usually want lari in cash, while larger hotels and most restaurants take cards.
- Insurance: foreigners must carry travel insurance for the whole stay, covering at least 30,000 GEL. Make sure it includes mountain hiking.
- Driving: winter tyre rules and chains are covered in our Tbilisi to Kazbegi guide.
When to book
- July and August weekends: Tbilisi families drive up on Friday evening, and view rooms go first. Book two to four weeks ahead. Summer rates run about a quarter to a half above spring prices.
- June and September: easier. On weekdays a week's notice is usually enough.
- Feast days: georgia.travel names Atengenoba, Kazbegoba and Gergetoba as days when crowds fill the town, so check the dates for your year.
- Winter: Kazbegi stays calm except over New Year and the Orthodox Christmas holiday (7 January), when Gudauri fills up.
