Key takeaways
  • By road, Gudauri is ~120 km from Tbilisi, all of it on the Georgian Military Road. Driving takes about 2 hours in summer and 2 to 2.5 hours in winter.
  • The cheapest way up is a Stepantsminda minibus from Didube bus station, about 15 GEL (about $6). Ask the driver to stop in Gudauri.
  • From Tbilisi airport, ~135 km away, a transfer booked in advance is easiest, above all with ski bags or a night landing.
  • The law requires winter tyres on the Mleta to Kobi section, which includes the climb to the resort, from 1 December until 1 March.
  • The pass that closes most often, the Jvari, lies beyond the resort, so winter closures rarely stop you reaching Gudauri. Check the road status anyway.

To get from Tbilisi to Gudauri, ride the Stepantsminda minibus out of Didube bus station if you want the lowest fare, or book a private transfer if you want a door-to-door ride with your skis. Shared taxis, Bolt and a rental car sit in between. Every option uses the same road. It runs north up the Aragvi valley, then climbs a ladder of tight bends to the resort at about 2,200 m. In winter the trip takes 2 to 2.5 hours, and the road is open on nearly every day of the season.

This guide is for the 2026/27 ski season, when the lifts usually open in the last two weeks of December, with a short part on summer at the end. It covers fares, drive times, the winter tyre law, Jvari Pass closures, ski bags, night flights and the trip back. For lifts and pistes, read our guide to skiing in Gudauri. To weigh it against Bakuriani, see ski resorts in Georgia compared. For the village, see the Gudauri place page. We checked the facts on 29 October 2026.

How far is Gudauri from Tbilisi? Distance and drive time

Gudauri is ~120 km from central Tbilisi and ~135 km from the airport, which sits on the south-east edge of the city. The first 100 km are easy. You leave town past Mtskheta and follow the Aragvi north past the Zhinvali reservoir, Ananuri and Pasanauri. After Kvesheti and Mleta, the road climbs in hairpins for the last ~13 km.

FromDistanceSummerWinter, normal dayWinter, fresh snow
Tbilisi centre~120 kmabout 2 h2 to 2.5 h3 h or more
Tbilisi airport (TBS)~135 kmabout 2.25 habout 2.5 h3 h or more
Stepantsminda (Kazbegi)~35 kmabout 45 minabout 1 hno road while the pass is shut

In winter, the hairpins eat the time. Lorries bound for the Upper Lars border with Russia crawl up in low gear, and after a snowfall everyone queues behind them.

Arrive before darkIn December and early January the sun sets before 18:00. Aim to reach the top of the hairpins in daylight, because wet snow on the road freezes fast once the sun goes.

Marshrutka from Didube to Gudauri

Few buses run to Gudauri alone. The usual way is the minibus to Stepantsminda (Kazbegi), getting off on the way. It starts from Didube bus station, beside Didube metro, and leaves when it is full. Our Tbilisi to Kazbegi guide walks you through the bus yard, so here we cover what matters for skiers.

  1. Say Gudauri before you board
Tell the driver you are going to Gudauri. The fare is about 15 GEL (about $6) in cash. Some drivers ask for the full Stepantsminda fare, so agree the price first.
  2. Go in the morning
Vans leave about once an hour from around 08:00 or 09:00 until the late afternoon, with fewer in deep winter. Take one before noon so you arrive in daylight.
  3. Expect about 2.5 hours
There is usually one short break, often in Pasanauri. The van does not wait at Ananuri or the viewpoints.
  4. Get off on the main road
The vans stay on the highway through the resort. If your hotel is up in New Gudauri by the lifts, plan on a short taxi ride or an uphill walk. Gudauri has a small Bolt zone for hops like this.

Skis and boards on the minibus

Drivers put ski bags in the boot or tie them on the roof, often for a few lari extra. On a full van there may be no room for a long board bag at all. For a short stay, it is easier to hire skis and boots in Gudauri, where rental shops sit close to the main lifts.

Shared taxi, Bolt and taxis to Gudauri

Drivers in the Didube yard also sell seats in ordinary cars. A seat to Gudauri costs about 40-60 GEL (about $15-23), and the car goes once all four seats are sold. Look at the tyres before you get in, and agree whether the price ends on the highway or at your hotel door.

To start from your own door, order a Bolt or call a taxi for the whole car. The ride costs roughly 120-170 GEL (about $45-65), and the app shows its fare before you confirm. Drivers sometimes turn down long mountain jobs, so order early. From December to March, ask the driver to confirm winter tyres before you set off.

Tbilisi airport to Gudauri: transfers and night landings

From the airport, a Gudauri transfer booked in advance is the simplest way up. Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall holding your name and carries the ski bags to the car. You pay per car, so the cost per head falls fast as the group grows. Across the market, a sedan starts at about 170-200 GEL (about $65-75) in 2026. Our own prices are on the transfers page.

Public transport from the airport is slow. No bus runs straight to the resort. You first cross the city to Didube, which costs about 50 GEL (about $19) with the official airport taxi, then wait for a minibus with free seats.

Landing at night

Many flights reach Tbilisi between midnight and dawn. The Didube minibuses do not run at night, and the airport bus only starts again in the morning. That leaves two good choices.

  • Book a transfer that leaves straight from arrivals. On a clear night the road is quiet, and you can be asleep in Gudauri before sunrise. After heavy snow, your driver may suggest waiting for daylight.
  • Sleep in Tbilisi or by the airport, then head up in mid-morning. You see Ananuri in daylight and skip the hairpins at their iciest.

Our Ski Week in Gudauri starts with exactly this ride: a pick-up at Tbilisi airport, a stop at Ananuri and five nights close to the lifts. It runs privately for your group alone, of any size, on dates you choose, with a guide who speaks your language.

Insurance that covers skiingGeorgia requires every foreign visitor to be insured for the length of the trip, for at least 30,000 GEL. Cheap policies often exclude ski accidents, so read the small print.

Driving to Gudauri: winter tyres and chains

Driving yourself works well if you have handled snow before, but winter brings extra rules. Government decree No. 526 of 27 December 2023 lists the roads where winter tyres are compulsory from 1 December to 1 March. On the Military Road it names the section from Mleta to Kobi. So the whole climb to the resort is covered, not just the pass beyond it.

RuleWhat it means for you
Dates1 December to 1 March; the Interior Ministry can set a different period in bad weather
WhereMleta to Kobi on the Military Road, km 80 to 106 in the decree's list
TyresSnowflake symbol on every tyre, tread no shallower than 3 mm on a car, and no more than 10 years old
ChainsPolice can order them on the drive wheels in heavy snow or ice
If you break itA fine of about 100 GEL (about $38) and 5 points; police can also turn you back

Ask the rental firm in writing for winter tyres and a set of chains, then check the snowflake mark and the date on each tyre before you leave. Practise fitting the chains once in Tbilisi. Four-wheel drive helps you pull away on a slope, but it does nothing for braking on ice. The decree also lists the whole 49 km Tbilisi bypass road between Zahesi and Rustavi, which some drivers use to skirt the city.

On the hairpins, never overtake lorries on a bend, and stop only where the road is wide, since the snowploughs need room. Our Tbilisi to Kazbegi guide has more winter driving advice for this road.

Jvari Pass closures and road status: do they stop you?

Usually not. The Jvari Pass (~2,379 m) is further on, between the resort and Kobi. Most winter closures cover only that section, so Gudauri stays open to traffic from Tbilisi. In each of the last five winters, the Roads Department shut the pass to all vehicles on 10 to 17 days.

The climb from Mleta can close too, but rarely and briefly. High avalanche danger shut it for a few evening hours on 24 December 2023. Our New Year in Gudauri guide sums up the holiday road record.

Where to check before you go

  • Our road status page sums up the latest Roads Department notices for the Jvari Pass and other mountain roads.
  • The Roads Department posts every notice at georoad.gov.ge, fullest in Georgian. You can also phone +995 32 2 31 30 76.
  • Hotels and drivers in the resort tend to know first.
  • In an emergency, call 112.

A closed pass matters only if you sleep in Stepantsminda or plan a day out to Gergeti. Work continues on a bypass from Kvesheti to Kobi through a 9 km tunnel. No opening date had been given by late October 2026, so assume the old road for this winter.

Gudauri to Tbilisi: getting back on departure day

The way down is where plans fail most often. Minibuses from Stepantsminda pass through Gudauri on their way to Didube, but many are full by the time they reach the resort. You cannot book a seat, and the last van leaves Stepantsminda in the late afternoon.

  • Book your car down the day before, through your hotel or the company that brought you up.
  • In winter, leave Gudauri at least 5 hours before your flight: 2.5 hours on the road, a margin for snow or lorries, and the airport itself.
  • For a flight between midnight and 06:00, spend your last night in Tbilisi instead of driving the hairpins in the dark.
  • Ski on your last morning, not your last afternoon. The lifts run until 17:00, too late for most evening flights.
  • Taking the minibus? Wait by the shops and petrol station on the main road, and allow time for a full van or two.

Going down, the pass is behind you, so its closures cannot trap you in Gudauri. Fresh snow on the hairpins can still slow the first hour.

Stops between Tbilisi and Gudauri

With a car, the drive turns into a short day out. These stops fit easily into a transfer, in order from Tbilisi.

  1. Jvari Monastery, ~22 km
A short detour to the hilltop church above Mtskheta, built around the year 600, with the view down to where two rivers meet.
  2. Zhinvali reservoir, ~60 km
A lay-by above the lake that gives Tbilisi much of its drinking water. In a cold January its edges freeze.
  3. Ananuri, ~66 km
A walled 17th-century fortress with two churches on the shore. Climb the tower for the best view.
  4. Pasanauri, ~88 km
The village is famous for mountain khinkali, which makes it the natural lunch stop.

In winter, keep the stops short and save the climb for daylight. In summer, add the Friendship Monument, ~5 km past the resort, and the orange mineral springs below the pass.

Short of time? Our private Kazbegi Day Trip passes the reservoir and stops at Ananuri, Pasanauri and Gudauri on the way to Gergeti Trinity Church. You are back in Tbilisi the same evening.

Tbilisi to Gudauri in summer

From June to September the trip is easier, about 2 hours by car. The tyre law does not apply, minibuses run more often, and you can stop wherever you like. People come up for tandem paragliding, ridge walks and the Friendship Monument. Some lifts, among them the gondolas to Kobi, run for walkers in high summer, so check that year's dates first.

Snow can return early. In recent years the pass has closed for snow as early as the second half of November. From October on, look at the road status and the Gudauri weather before you drive up.

Tbilisi to Gudauri: frequently asked questions

How far is Gudauri from Tbilisi?

About 120 km by road from the city centre and about 135 km from Tbilisi airport. Allow around two hours in summer and up to 2.5 in winter.

What is the best way from Tbilisi airport to Gudauri?

The easiest way is a transfer booked in advance, which takes about 2.5 hours and leaves at any hour. On a budget, take a taxi to Didube bus station, then the Stepantsminda minibus.

Is there a bus from Tbilisi to Gudauri?

In practice, yes. Minibuses to Stepantsminda leave Didube bus station through the day and stop in Gudauri on request. Expect to pay about 15 GEL (about $6) in cash.

How do I get from Gudauri to Tbilisi?

Book a car or transfer the day before, through your hotel or a transfer company. Minibuses from Stepantsminda pass the resort, but they are often full and take no bookings.

Are winter tyres required on the road to Gudauri?

Yes, between 1 December and 1 March. The official list includes the Military Road from Mleta to Kobi, which covers the climb to the resort. Police can also order chains.

Does a Jvari Pass closure block the road to Gudauri?

Usually not. The pass lies beyond the resort, toward Kazbegi, and most closures cover only that stretch. The climb from Mleta closes rarely, and then mostly for a few hours.

Can I take skis on the marshrutka?

Usually, yes, in the back or on the roof, often for a small extra fee. A full van may have no space left, so hiring skis in Gudauri saves the trouble.

Yes, but it is a long day. With 4.5 to 5 hours on the road in winter, you get about 5 hours on the slopes if you leave Tbilisi by 07:30.
