Tbilisi Weather in January
Tbilisi weather in January brings the coldest nights of the year, hovering around 0 °C (32 °F), while afternoons climb to about 7 °C (45 °F). It is also the driest month, with roughly 16 mm of rain on four days, so dry spells far outnumber wet ones. December was a degree milder, and February adds less than two degrees. Snow is a rare visitor: some winters bring a few light falls, and they seldom last beyond a day or two.
What to wear in Tbilisi in January
The weather in Tbilisi in January calls for a warm coat, a hat and gloves in the morning, when frost can whiten parked cars in Vake and Sololaki. Underneath, wear layers you can peel off, since museums, cafes and churches are heated. Shoes with good grip help on the sloping Old Town cobbles.
What January is good for
The holidays fill the first three weeks. Fireworks crackle over every hillside at New Year, the Alilo procession sings through the centre on Christmas Day, 7 January, Old New Year follows on the night of the 13th, and Epiphany on the 19th. A soak at the Abanotubani Sulphur Baths suits the season. Mtskheta, at about 6 °C by day, makes an easy half-day trip, and Gudauri is in full ski season at around -4 °C. Beyond it, snow can close the road to Kazbegi, so check first.

Tbilisi in January: FAQ
Does it snow in Tbilisi in January?
Only occasionally. Some winters bring a light fall or two that melts within a couple of days, because afternoons usually reach about 7 °C (45 °F). For dependable snow, head roughly two hours north to Gudauri, or on into the Kazbegi valley, where January afternoons hover around freezing.
Is the road from Tbilisi to Kazbegi open in January?
Usually, but not every day. The Jvari Pass stretch between Gudauri and Kobi closes repeatedly in winter after heavy snow, mostly between December and April. Stepantsminda itself averages about 0 °C (32 °F) by day and -8 °C at night, so check the road status in the morning and keep a backup plan such as Ananuri Fortress or Mtskheta.
