- For 3 days in Georgia, sleep in Tbilisi throughout: walk the Old Town on day 1, drive to Mtskheta and Kazbegi on day 2 and spend day 3 around Sighnaghi in Kakheti.
- Day 2 is the long one, ~310 km and about 6 hours at the wheel; day 3 is ~250 km and 4 to 4.5 hours, and it ends on the airport side of the city.
- Put Kazbegi in the middle of the weekend: if snow shuts the 2,379 m Jvari Pass, you swap it with Kakheti instead of losing it.
- Hikers should add a night in Stepantsminda, wine lovers a night in Sighnaghi, and anyone landing at Kutaisi should stay in the west instead of spending 7 to 8 hours driving to Tbilisi and back.
- In 2026 a car with a private driver runs to ~200-450 GEL (~$75-175) per day, split between everyone in it, so for three or four people the cost per head comes close to a seat on a group tour.
The best Georgia itinerary for 3 days gives one day to walking Tbilisi, one to the Georgian Military Road and Gergeti Trinity Church below Mount Kazbek, and one to the vineyards and cellars around Sighnaghi, with every night in the same Tbilisi hotel. Each trip out of the capital takes two to three hours each way on paved roads, so a long weekend can show you the city, the high Caucasus and a family wine table without changing rooms once.
Below is that plan hour by hour, with drive times that match our route guides, followed by four other ways to use 72 hours in Georgia: the Kazbegi mountains, a slower wine weekend, a history weekend of cave towns and royal churches, and a west-Georgia version for anyone landing at Kutaisi. Then come 2026 costs for drivers, tours, minibuses and rental cars, where to sleep and what to save for a longer trip.
Georgia itinerary 3 days: the plan at a glance
Tbilisi lies at the centre of the country's eastern half, with the Caucasus to the north and the wine country to the east, both within three hours. So the easiest plan is a hub and two spokes: one hotel, two long day trips and a day on foot in the capital. You never repack, and you can swap days around the weather.
| Day | Where | Highlights | Driving | Night |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Tbilisi | Kala's old lanes, the cable car to Narikala, the bath domes, sunset from Mtatsminda | None: walking, cable car, funicular and Bolt | Tbilisi |
| Day 2 | Mtskheta and Kazbegi | Jvari Monastery, Ananuri, the Jvari Pass, Gergeti Trinity Church, Svetitskhoveli | About 6 hours, ~310 km round trip | Tbilisi, or Stepantsminda |
| Day 3 | Kakheti | Ninotsminda, clay-oven bread, Bodbe, Sighnaghi's walls, lunch in a family cellar | 4 to 4.5 hours, ~250 km round trip | Tbilisi, or a flight home that evening |
Would you rather have it arranged? Our Taste of Georgia tour turns this plan into a private trip with your own guide, in your language; pick any date, bring any number of people, and let the driver be the one who skips the wine at the cellar lunch.
Is 3 days in Georgia enough? Who a long weekend suits
Three days is enough to see why people fall for Georgia, provided you accept two full days in a car. You get the capital, one high mountain valley and one wine district, but not Svaneti, the Black Sea or a real hike. The plan works best for:
- Weekend and stopover travellers: short direct flights link Tbilisi with Istanbul, the Gulf and much of Europe, so Friday to Monday is realistic.
- First-time visitors testing the country before a longer return.
- Business travellers in Tbilisi who can stay on for a Saturday and Sunday.
- Travellers giving Georgia three days of a wider Caucasus trip with Armenia.
- Families and older travellers: one hotel, short walks and a car waiting at every stop.
Hikers and beach lovers need longer: the best Kazbegi walks need a night there, and Batumi is a 5- to 6-hour drive from the capital.
Day 1: one well-planned day in Tbilisi
Spend the first day on foot in the old city: roughly 5 to 6 km of easy walking, with a cable car to the fortress and a funicular for the evening view. Our Tbilisi itinerary has more detail if you later add a second city day.
- 9:00 Sioni and Anchiskhati
Start at Freedom Square and walk down into the Old Town. Sioni Cathedral keeps the vine-stem cross linked to St Nino, and 6th-century Anchiskhati is the capital's oldest surviving church. - 10:30 Bridge of Peace and the cable car
Cross the glass footbridge to Rike Park and ride up to Narikala for ~2.5 GEL (~$1) one way in 2026, paid with a transport card or a contactless bank card. Follow the 4th-century walls west to the Mother of Georgia statue. - 14:30 Museum or Sololaki
Choose between the Colchian gold in the Georgian National Museum and an amble through Sololaki's painted 19th-century entrance halls. Rustaveli Avenue is being rebuilt until about the end of November 2026, so expect fences near the museum. - 17:00 A private bath
Reserve a private room in an Abanotubani bathhouse for an hour, ~130-200 GEL (~$50-75) for the whole room in 2026. - Sunset: Mtatsminda
Take the funicular from Chonkadze Street up to the park, ~12 GEL (~$4.50) each way for foreign visitors in 2026, and watch the lights come on before dinner in Sololaki or the Old Town.
Prefer to keep the whole weekend in the capital, plus a morning in Mtskheta? That is our Tbilisi City Break.
Day 2: Mtskheta, the Georgian Military Road and Kazbegi
The day people talk about afterwards: ~155 km north over the main Caucasus ridge, crossed at the 2,379 m Jvari Pass, to Stepantsminda (most people say Kazbegi) under the 5,054 m summit of Kazbek. Count on about 3 hours each way without stops, 10 to 11 hours door to door. Set off by 8:00, ahead of the lorries bound for the Russian border.
- 8:30 Jvari Monastery, ~22 km
A short detour climbs to the church of about 600 AD on its hilltop. From the terrace you watch the Aragvi and the Mtkvari join below the rooftops of Mtskheta. The town itself comes on the way home. - 9:45 Zhinvali lookout and Ananuri, ~66 km
Pull in above the turquoise reservoir, then walk round the 17th-century castle of the Aragvi dukes and climb its tower. Entry is free. - 12:30 Over the pass to Stepantsminda
Mineral springs have stained the slopes near the top orange. Drop into the Tergi valley and eat lunch in town, at ~1,740 m. - 14:00 Gergeti Trinity Church
A 4x4 from the main square reaches the church, built in the 14th century on a ridge at 2,170 m, in about 20 minutes, for ~50-100 GEL (~$19-37) a car, up and back, in 2026. Fit walkers can hike up in 1 to 2 hours, a climb of ~430 m, but that pushes the drive home into the dark. - 15:30 South again, with Svetitskhoveli at dusk
Head down while it is light. In Mtskheta, see Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (1010-1029), usually open until about 20:00, once the coach groups have gone.
Our Kazbegi Day Trip covers this day privately, with the 4x4 ride to Gergeti, on any date you choose.
Day 3: Sighnaghi, Bodbe and a Kakheti wine lunch
Kakheti is Georgia's main wine region, a broad valley of vineyards under the Greater Caucasus. The road east is quick: ~113 km to Sighnaghi, about 2 hours on the highway through Sagarejo. Expect a day of 9 to 10 hours with 4 to 4.5 of them driving, and leave at 9:00.
- 10:00 Ninotsminda, ~57 km
On the edge of Sagarejo, a ruined 6th-century domed church stands inside a ring of fortress walls. - 10:30 Bread from the clay oven
Bakeries along the highway slap dough onto the inner wall of a hot tone oven. Buy a long shoti loaf and eat it warm in the car. - 11:15 Bodbe Monastery, ~111 km
St Nino, the missionary who converted King Mirian of Kartli in the 4th century, is buried in the small church among the cypresses. A long stairway drops through the woods to her spring, and the climb back is steep. - 12:00 Sighnaghi's walls
Walk part of the ~4 km rampart King Erekle II built in 1762, with its 23 towers, and look across the flat Alazani Valley to the snowy wall of the Caucasus. - 16:00 Back to Tbilisi or to your flight
The highway returns you to the city in about 2 hours. Tbilisi airport lies on this side of town, ~100 km from Sighnaghi, so a flight after about 20:00 works if you leave by 16:00.
Kakheti picks its grapes, the rtveli, from about mid-September well into October. It is the finest time for this day and the busiest, so book the cellar lunch and any Sighnaghi room ahead.
Our Kakheti Wine Day Trip follows this route privately and adds the Tsinandali estate on the way back.
Other ways to spend 3 days in Georgia: mountains, wine, history or the west
Each version keeps day 1 in Tbilisi, except the west one, and builds days 2 and 3 around one interest.
Mountains: a night in Stepantsminda
Best from June to early October, when the side valleys are free of snow.
- Day 2: up the Military Road, Gergeti in the evening
Drive up with the stops above, check in, and walk to Gergeti in the late afternoon, when Kazbek turns gold and the 4x4s have thinned out. Eat khinkali and khabizgina, a cheese and potato pie, at your guesthouse. - Day 3: Truso or Juta, then home
Truso, entered at Kobi on the way back, is an almost level valley walk past orange travertines to the empty stone village of Ketrisi; a 4x4 shortens the ~22 km return trip to Zakagori. Juta, below the rock towers of Chaukhi at ~2,200 m, is steeper; ask whether cars reach the village, as the road was damaged in 2025. In poor weather, see the Gveleti waterfall and Dariali Monastery. Leave by about 16:00.
Wine: a night in Sighnaghi
Best from May to June and from mid-September to October. Our Kakheti travel guide has longer versions.
- Day 2: Bodbe, Sighnaghi and a second cellar
Follow day 3 above at half the speed, add a tasting at a winery in the valley below town, and watch the sun set over the Alazani from the walls. Sleep in Sighnaghi. - Day 3: Tsinandali, Alaverdi and the Gombori road
Cross the valley to the Chavchavadze estate at Tsinandali and the tall 11th-century cathedral of Alaverdi among the vines, or go north to Gremi and the Kvareli wine tunnel. Return over the Gombori Pass, ~96 km and 2 to 2.5 hours from Telavi, if it is open; otherwise use the longer valley road through Gurjaani.
History: cave towns, royal churches and a desert monastery
Good in any month, because no road on it crosses a high pass. July and August are fierce on the bare rock.
- Day 2: Uplistsikhe, Gori and Mtskheta
Drive west on the E60 to Uplistsikhe, ~95 km and about 1 hour 15 minutes, a town hewn from a sandstone ridge and inhabited from the first millennium BC into the 13th century; the ticket is ~15 GEL (~$5.50) in 2026. Gori, with Stalin's birth house and a hilltop fortress, is 15 minutes away. End in Mtskheta with Samtavro, Svetitskhoveli and Jvari in the evening light. - Day 3: David Gareja
Drive south-east, about 2 hours each way, into striped semi-desert hills to the monastery St David and his followers cut into the cliffs in the 6th century. When border guards allow it, a ridge path climbs to the painted caves of Udabno. Carry water and a hat.
For a gentler version, swap the Gori day for an unhurried day in Mtskheta with the cave monastery of Shio-Mgvime. Our Mtskheta Day Trip runs privately on any date.
West: a long weekend from Kutaisi airport
If a low-cost flight lands you at Kutaisi, ~20 km west of the city, stay in the west: Tbilisi is ~245 km and 3.5 to 4 hours away. Best in May, June, September and October; the caves keep about 14°C all year.
- Day 1: Kutaisi, Gelati and Motsameta
See Bagrati Cathedral on its hill, the White Bridge and the Green Bazaar, then drive 15 to 20 minutes to Gelati, the monastery and academy David the Builder founded in 1106, and on to Motsameta above its river bend. - Day 2: Prometheus Cave and a canyon
Prometheus Cave, ~20 km from town, has lit halls and an optional boat ride; a foreign adult pays ~40 GEL (~$15) in 2026. Then drive about an hour to Martvili Canyon (also ~40 GEL) or the cliff walkway at Okatse (~30 GEL, ~$11). - Day 3: choose your exit
Fly home from Kutaisi after Sataplia's dinosaur footprints; drive ~150 km to Batumi, 2.5 to 3 hours, and fly out from the coast; or cross to Tbilisi with stops at Surami, Uplistsikhe and Mtskheta, which add about 4 hours to the drive.
Our Kutaisi travel guide covers the city and its day trips in more depth.
Georgia 3-day trip plans compared: route, season and driving hours
Driving hours are totals for the three days at normal speeds without stops. Add time for summer traffic and snow.
| Plan | Route | Best season | Driving in 3 days | Nights |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Classic (recommended) | Tbilisi, Mtskheta, Kazbegi, Sighnaghi | April to October; winter with a pass check | ~10-11 h | Tbilisi |
| Mountains | Tbilisi, Kazbegi, Truso or Juta | June to early October | ~7-8 h with local 4x4 rides | Tbilisi, Stepantsminda |
| Wine | Tbilisi, Sighnaghi, Tsinandali, Telavi | May to June, mid-September to October | ~6 h | Tbilisi, Sighnaghi |
| History | Tbilisi, Uplistsikhe, Gori, Mtskheta, David Gareja | All year; best March to June and September to November | ~7 h | Tbilisi |
| West | Kutaisi, Gelati, Prometheus, Martvili or Okatse | May to June, September to October; caves all year | ~4-5 h, or ~8 h ending in Tbilisi | Kutaisi |
Which plan for which season?
- Spring (April and May): classic or history. Tbilisi is mild and Kakheti green, but Juta and Truso can still lie under snow.
- Summer (June to August): the mountains plan, or classic with early starts. Tbilisi can top 35°C in July and August, so walk the city early and late.
- Autumn (September and October): the wine plan at harvest time, or classic with autumn colour in the Kazbegi valleys. Mtskheta's church festival on 14 October fills the town.
- Winter (November to March): history or west, since neither crosses a high pass. Kazbegi still works with winter tyres and a spare day, and Gudauri, ~120 km from Tbilisi, turns day 2 into a ski day.
Getting around on a Georgia long weekend: driver, tour, minibus or rental car
Most sights sit between towns, and that decides how to travel. Prices are approximate for 2026.
| Option | Approximate cost (2026) | Best for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private driver | ~200-450 GEL (~$75-175) daily for the car and driver | Two to four people who want to stop anywhere | Many drivers do not explain the sights; agree stops and waiting time first |
| Private tour with a guide | ~450-750 GEL (~$175-290) a day for the whole group; lunch and tickets extra | First visits, families, wine days | Book a few days ahead from June to October |
| Shared group tour | ~60-150 GEL (~$23-60) per person | Solo travellers on a budget | Fixed timetable, short stops, bigger groups |
| Marshrutka (minibus) | Per seat: ~2 GEL to Mtskheta, ~15 GEL to Sighnaghi, ~15-20 GEL to Stepantsminda, ~20 GEL to Kutaisi | Reaching towns cheaply | Passes Ananuri, Bodbe and Jvari without stopping; cash only |
| Rental car | ~80-160 GEL (~$30-60) daily for a compact car, plus fuel | Confident drivers | Fast, assertive local driving; winter tyres on the Kazbegi road from 1 December to 1 March; no wine for the driver |
| Bolt and mountain 4x4s | ~25-40 GEL (~$10-15) airport to centre; ~50-100 GEL (~$19-37) per car up to Gergeti and back | Airport runs and short hops | Agree a 4x4 price before you set off |
Kazbegi minibuses leave from Didube bus station and Kakheti ones from the Navtlughi stop by Samgori metro. They are as quick as a car but skip everything between the towns. For a long weekend the sums usually favour a driver on days 2 and 3: two days at ~300 GEL make ~600 GEL (~$225), about 75 GEL (~$28) a head per day for four people.
Where to stay for 3 days in Georgia
For the classic plan, book two or three nights in one central Tbilisi hotel on a street a car can reach. Early pick-ups are much easier when the driver can pull up at the door rather than at the foot of a pedestrian lane in Kala.
- Tbilisi: Sololaki, or the Old Town streets around Freedom Square, if you want to walk everywhere; Avlabari, across the river, for cheaper guesthouses and a metro stop; Vera for quiet streets and cafes.
- Stepantsminda: the centre for drivers, shops and cash machines; Gergeti village, over the river, for calm and the church path outside the door; Sno or Arsha, a few minutes south, for farm guesthouses.
- Kakheti: Sighnaghi for the views and evening walks on the walls; Telavi for Alaverdi and Tsinandali; a family marani in a wine village for dinner with your hosts' own wine.
- Kutaisi: the centre between the White Bridge and Bagrati, so you can walk to dinner; Tskaltubo, ~10 km away, for a faded spa town with warm pools.
Book Kazbegi early from July to September and Sighnaghi for harvest weekends.
What 3 days cannot cover, and longer Georgia itineraries
These are the places people most often try to squeeze into a long weekend, and why it rarely works.
- Svaneti: Mestia is ~460 km and 8 to 9 hours from Tbilisi by road, and the ~1-hour flight from Natakhtari depends on the weather.
- Batumi and the Black Sea: ~370 km, 5 to 6 hours by car or about 4 hours on the fastest train, too far for a day trip.
- Vardzia and Borjomi: the cave monastery is ~265 km and about 4 hours away; with Borjomi on the road, it needs two days.
- Tusheti: open only in summer, by 4x4 over the ~2,950 m Abano Pass, a full day each way.
- Racha, Khevsureti and treks such as Mestia to Ushguli: allow a week or more.
If you can stay longer
- 5 days: our 5-day Georgia itinerary gives Kazbegi an overnight stay and adds more of the country west or east of Tbilisi.
- 7 days: our 7-day itinerary is the classic first week, with two nights in Kazbegi, two in Kakheti, and Uplistsikhe and Mtskheta on the way.
- 10 days: our 10-day Georgia itinerary crosses to the west for Kutaisi and the high villages of Svaneti.
- 14 days: our 14-day Georgia itinerary has time for both halves of the country, from Kakheti's cellars to Svaneti, with days to walk.
Georgia in 3 days: frequently asked questions
Is 3 days enough to see Georgia?
It is enough for a strong first taste: Tbilisi, the Kazbegi mountains and the Kakheti wine country, with two days of 4 to 6 hours in the car. It is not enough for Svaneti, Batumi or hiking beyond short walks, which need a week or more.
Can you see Kazbegi and Kakheti on a 3-day trip to Georgia?
Yes. They lie in opposite directions from Tbilisi, so visit each as its own day trip from a Tbilisi hotel. Stepantsminda is ~155 km and about 3 hours each way, Sighnaghi ~113 km and about 2 hours. Trying both on the same day does not work.
What is the best Georgia long weekend in winter?
The history plan (Uplistsikhe, Gori, Mtskheta and David Gareja) or a west-Georgia weekend from Kutaisi, as neither crosses a high pass. Kazbegi is possible with winter tyres and a spare day in case the Jvari Pass shuts, and Gudauri offers skiing from about late December.
How much does a 3-day trip to Georgia cost?
Flights aside, a mid-range traveller spends ~250-450 GEL (~$95-175) a day in 2026, so ~750-1,350 GEL (~$290-520) for three days, including a share of a driver. Backpackers using minibuses manage on ~100-170 GEL (~$40-65) a day.
Can I visit Batumi in 3 days in Georgia?
Only by making it the focus of the trip. Batumi is ~370 km from Tbilisi, about 4 hours on the fastest train, so pair it with Kutaisi instead: fly into Kutaisi, see the city and its caves, and finish in Batumi, ~150 km away.
Should I sleep in Kazbegi or go back to Tbilisi?
Go back if you want one fixed base and are happy with Gergeti and the drive. Sleep in Stepantsminda if you want to hike to Juta or Truso, or to see Kazbek in the morning, when the summit is more often clear of cloud.
Do I need a car for 72 hours in Georgia?
Not in Tbilisi, where you walk and use Bolt or the metro. For the Kazbegi and Kakheti days you want a driver or a tour, because minibuses skip everything between the towns. A rental car is cheapest, but the driver misses the wine.
What should I book before a long weekend in Georgia?
Your first night's room if you land in the small hours, a private bath in Tbilisi, a driver or tour for days 2 and 3, and the Kakheti cellar lunch at harvest time. And pack proof of health insurance for the trip: Georgia has made it compulsory for foreign tourists since 1 January 2026.
