Georgia Itinerary 5 Days: Tbilisi, Kazbegi and Kakheti Day by Day

Key takeaways
  • Five days suits the east of Georgia: Tbilisi, Mtskheta, one night in Stepantsminda under Mount Kazbek and one night in Sighnaghi, with 13 to 14 hours of driving across the whole trip.
  • Adding Kutaisi or Batumi means 3 to 3.5 hours each way over the Likhi Range, so see the west only on an open-jaw ticket (into Kutaisi, out of Tbilisi) or make it the whole trip.
  • Svaneti fits into five days only on its own: fly from Natakhtari near Tbilisi (90 GEL one way, weather permitting) or drive ~240 km from Kutaisi airport.
  • Go in May, June, September or October; from late December to March, trade the Kazbegi night for two nights of skiing in Gudauri.
  • In 2026 a private driver costs roughly 200-450 GEL per car per day, while minibuses reach Stepantsminda and Sighnaghi for about 15-20 GEL but skip every sight on the way.

Five days in Georgia is the right amount of time for the east of the country, and too little to do east and west justice. This Georgia itinerary, 5 days and four nights, starts in Tbilisi, follows the Georgian Military Road past Mtskheta to a night in Stepantsminda under Mount Kazbek, returns to the capital, then ends with a night in Sighnaghi and a drive over the Gombori Pass to the airport. Every road is paved, and no day asks for more than about four hours in the car.

It is a shorter, tighter route than our 7-day itinerary: one mountain night instead of two, no Uplistsikhe, and the wine country saved for last because Tbilisi airport lies on the Kakheti side of the city. Below you will find each day with its drive times, four other ways to use five days (the west from Kutaisi, Svaneti by plane or by road, and a winter plan with Gudauri), a table that compares them, transport costs for 2026 and the best areas to sleep.

Georgia itinerary 5 days at a glance

The plan assumes five full days and a flight home on the evening of Day 5. You sleep in three places, but the suitcase moves once: leave it at your Tbilisi hotel on Day 2 and collect it on Day 3.

Prefer one Tbilisi hotel and a guide at the wheel? Our five-day Highlights of Georgia tour follows Days 1 to 3, makes Kakheti a day out from the capital and ends at the cave town of Uplistsikhe. As a private trip it starts on whatever date suits you, for a party of any size, and we can add the Sighnaghi night on request.

Is 5 days in Georgia enough? Who it suits and what you give up

Five days works for a first visit if you pick one half of the country. It suits a long weekend plus two days of leave, a stopover on the way to Armenia, and families who want the classic sights without five hotel changes.

East only, or a rushed east-west?

The Likhi Range splits Georgia near Surami. East of it, Tbilisi, Kazbegi and the Kakheti wine valley lie within about 3 hours of each other. West of it are Kutaisi, the canyons and caves of Imereti, Batumi and the road to Svaneti. Crossing takes 3 to 3.5 hours each way by car, or about 3 hours by train to Kutaisi Airport station, so a return trip eats most of one of your five days.

  • East only (our pick): Tbilisi, Mtskheta, Kazbegi and Kakheti, 13 to 14 hours of driving and two quiet evenings outside the city.
  • East and west together: you gain Kutaisi and its canyons, lose the Kazbegi night or Kakheti, and spend roughly 14 hours in a vehicle. Only worth it on an open-jaw ticket, into Kutaisi and out of Tbilisi.
  • West only or Svaneti only: a fine second trip, or a first one if a cheap flight lands you in Kutaisi. Both are below.

Tusheti, Khevsureti, Vardzia and multi-day treks need a longer trip.

Day 1: Tbilisi's Old Town, Narikala and an evening at the baths

Drop your bags and give the day to Kala, the old quarter on the right bank of the Mtkvari. If your plane landed overnight, start after lunch.

  1. Metekhi and the river
Begin at 13th-century Metekhi Church on its cliff, beside the horseback figure of King Vakhtang Gorgasali, then cross the Bridge of Peace into Rike Park.
  2. Cable car to Narikala
Cabins carry you over the river to the 4th-century fortress in minutes. Walk the ridge to Kartlis Deda, the aluminium Mother of Georgia, then take the path down.
  3. Abanotubani and the waterfall
Brick domes below the walls cover the sulphur baths that named the city (tbili means warm). Follow the Leghvtakhevi gorge to its waterfall and book a private bath room for the evening.
  4. Sioni and Anchiskhati
End among the lanes by Sioni Cathedral and 6th-century Anchiskhati, the oldest church still standing in Tbilisi, then eat in Sololaki.

For hour-by-hour timings and food stops, use our Tbilisi itinerary. The capital gets one more evening on Day 3.

Day 2: Mtskheta, the Military Road and a night under Kazbek

The finest day of the trip: ~170 km, roughly three and a half hours behind the wheel, spread over 8 to 9 hours with stops. Leave by 8:30 to reach Gergeti in the late-afternoon light. Distances are from central Tbilisi.

  1. Jvari Monastery, ~22 km
A church of about the year 600 above the meeting of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers.
  2. Svetitskhoveli, Mtskheta
The old capital of Kartli and its cathedral of 1010-1029, raised on the spot where, by tradition, Christ's robe lies buried; Mtskheta's churches are UNESCO-listed. Allow an hour.
  3. Ananuri, ~66 km
The 17th-century castle of the dukes of Aragvi above the Zhinvali Reservoir.
  4. Pasanauri, ~88 km
Lunch, in the village that claims mountain-style khinkali.
  5. Gudauri and the Friendship Monument, ~120-125 km
Past the ski resort at ~2,200 m, the curved 1983 mosaic balcony looks over the Devil's Valley.
  6. Jvari Pass, 2,379 m
The top of the road; just beyond it, mineral springs have stained the slope with orange terraces.
  7. Gergeti Trinity Church, ~155 km
A local 4x4 makes the climb to the 14th-century church (2,170 m) in some 20 minutes, roughly 50-100 GEL ($19-37) per car return in 2026; on foot allow 1 to 2 hours. On a clear evening Kazbek (5,054 m) turns pink behind it.
Pack a mountain-night bagStepantsminda (~1,740 m) tends to run 8 to 10°C colder than Tbilisi. Take a warm layer, a rain shell and walking shoes in a day bag and leave the suitcase in Tbilisi.

From December to March, check the Jvari Pass first: in each recent winter it closed completely on 10 to 17 days. A new Kvesheti-Kobi road with a 9 km tunnel will bypass it, but had no opening date in October 2026.

Day 3: A morning walk in Kazbegi, then back to Tbilisi

Skies under Kazbek are clearest early and cloud often builds after midday, so walk first and drive later, leaving by about 1 pm.

June to early October: the Juta valley

Juta lies ~20 km from Stepantsminda at ~2,200 m, up a rough side road from Sno, where giant carved stone heads stand by the river. A local 4x4 takes about 40 minutes. An easy path climbs through meadows toward the Chaukhi spires (3,842 m); walk 2 to 3 hours and turn round when you like. The road was damaged in 2025 and repairs are planned, so ask your guesthouse whether cars reach the village.

Any season: Gveleti Waterfall and the Dariali gorge

Fifteen minutes north of town, a path of about 30 minutes each way climbs to the Gveleti Waterfall. Continue to the modern Dariali Monastery by the Russian border post, then turn south. After snow the path ices over, so ask first.

Afternoon and evening in Tbilisi

The drive back takes about 3 hours. Spend the evening on what Day 1 missed: Holy Trinity Cathedral (Sameba) on the left bank, then the funicular to Mtatsminda for the city lights, or Rustaveli Avenue.

Want a guide for Juta? Our four-day Tbilisi, Mountains & Wine tour builds its third morning around the walk and ends with a Kakheti day, leaving you a free fifth day.

Day 4: Into Kakheti for Bodbe, Sighnaghi and a cellar dinner

Kakheti makes most of Georgia's wine, and today's drive is short: ~113 km, about 2 hours through Sagarejo. Sleep in and leave mid-morning.

  1. Ninotsminda Cathedral, ~57 km
The shell of a 6th-century domed church, ringed by fortress walls, at Sagarejo.
  2. Roadside bakeries, ~75 km
Ovens by the highway sell loaves straight from the clay tone, too hot to hold.
  3. Bodbe Monastery
Two kilometres before Sighnaghi, this convent among cypresses keeps the grave of Saint Nino, who converted Georgia in the 4th century. Steps drop through the woods to her spring.
  4. Sighnaghi's walls
King Erekle II ringed the hilltop town with ~4 km of walls and over twenty towers in the 18th century. Walk a stretch for the view over the Alazani valley to the Caucasus, then see the Pirosmani paintings in the Sighnaghi Museum (usually closed on Mondays).
  5. Dinner in a family cellar
Spend the evening with a winemaking family: amber Rkatsiteli and inky Saperavi from qvevri, the clay jars set into the cellar floor, then a long dinner.
Plan the ride home from the cellarGeorgia's drink-drive limit is very low. If you rented a car, leave it at the guesthouse and walk or take a taxi to the tasting.

Day 5: Tsinandali, Alaverdi and the Gombori Pass to the airport

The last loop crosses the Alazani valley to the Telavi side, then climbs the forested Gombori road toward Tbilisi: 3.5 to 4 hours and ~170-190 km, depending on whether you add Alaverdi. The airport sits on the eastern, Kakheti side of the capital, so you never cross the city.

  1. Tsinandali Estate
About 1 h 15 min from Sighnaghi, the 19th-century home of the poet-prince Alexander Chavchavadze, with a house museum, a park and an old cellar.
  2. Alaverdi Monastery
A detour of about 40 minutes there and back from Telavi: the 11th-century cathedral rises ~50 m above the vines, and its monastery cellar still ferments wine in qvevri.
  3. Telavi
Lunch in Kakheti's main town, next to Batonis Tsikhe, Erekle II's fortified palace.
  4. Gombori Pass
The ~96 km road crosses the forest at ~1,600 m past the Shuamta monasteries and Ujarma Fortress. It can shut for a day or two after snow or rockfall, as in early October 2026, so check the road status that morning; the ~156 km fallback via Gurjaani takes about as long.
Flying out before dawn?Plenty of flights leave Tbilisi in the early hours. If yours does, reverse the last two days: cross Gombori on Day 4 and sleep near Telavi, then end in Sighnaghi, ~100 km and about 1.5 hours from the airport.

Other ways to spend 5 days in Georgia: the west, Svaneti and winter

Georgia in 5 days from Kutaisi: the west

Kutaisi is Georgia's low-cost airport, and the west fills five days by itself: gorges, show caves, cliff monasteries and Racha wine, with no drive over about 3.5 hours. Sleep three nights in Kutaisi and one in Ambrolauri.

  1. Day 1: Kutaisi
Bagrati Cathedral (1003), UNESCO-listed Gelati (founded 1106) and Motsameta on its cliff. About 1 hour of driving.
  2. Day 2: Katskhi and Chiatura
The church on the ~40 m Katskhi Pillar and the cable cars of Chiatura. About 3 hours.
  3. Day 3: Okatse, Kinchkha and Prometheus
Okatse Canyon's cliff walkway, Kinchkha Waterfall and Prometheus Cave. About 2.5 hours.
  4. Day 4: Into Racha
Over the Nakerala Pass to carved Nikortsminda Cathedral (1010-1014) and a Khvanchkara tasting. About 2.5 hours.
  5. Day 5: Back to Kutaisi
Barakoni Church above the Rioni and the synagogue town of Oni, then back for your flight. About 3.5 hours.

This is our Racha & Imereti tour, run privately on any date. For a beach instead, swap Racha for Batumi, 2.5 to 3 hours by road, and fly home from there.

East and west together: into Kutaisi, out of Tbilisi

To see both halves, buy an open-jaw ticket. Day 1 Kutaisi and Gelati; Day 2 Prometheus Cave and Martvili Canyon; Day 3 east to Tbilisi (~230 km) via Uplistsikhe and Mtskheta; Day 4 a Kazbegi day trip (about 6 hours of driving) or Kakheti; Day 5 Old Tbilisi before an evening flight. It works, but no night is spent in the mountains or the vineyards.

A mountains-heavy 5 days: Svaneti by plane or by road

Upper Svaneti, where stone towers crowd Mestia and Ushguli below Shkhara (5,193 m), Georgia's highest peak, is too far to add to the east in five days. Give it the whole trip.

  • By plane: small planes sold by Vanilla Sky fly from the Natakhtari airstrip, ~23 km north of the capital, to Mestia for 90 GEL one way, with a free shuttle from central Tbilisi, a 15 kg baggage limit and take-offs only in good visibility. Day 1 Tbilisi; Day 2 fly in and walk Mestia's towers; Day 3 Ushguli, 1.5 to 2 hours each way; Day 4 the Chalaadi Glacier or Koruldi Lakes (~2,740 m); Day 5 fly back, with Jvari on the drive into Tbilisi. A cancelled return means an 8 to 9 hour drive, so book a late flight home.
  • By road: land in Kutaisi in the morning and drive ~240 km to Mestia, about 4.5 hours, via Martvili Canyon. Days 2 to 4 for Ushguli, the glacier and the lakes, then drive back on Day 5 for an evening flight. The direct minibus leaves Kutaisi at 10:00 for about 35 GEL.
  • Not by road from Tbilisi: ~460 km and 8 to 9 hours each way.

With ten days you can join Svaneti to the east, as our Grand Tour with Svaneti does.

Winter: 5 days with Gudauri

From late December to March, Juta and Truso lie under snow, but Gudauri, two hours or a little more from Tbilisi (~120 km), has Georgia's largest ski area, with lifts to 3,276 m, and the road there stays south of the Jvari Pass. Day 1: Tbilisi and a private sulphur bath. Day 2: Mtskheta and a snowy Ananuri on the way up, then the slopes. Day 3: ski, or if the pass is open, cross to Stepantsminda (~35 km) and take a 4x4 up to Gergeti in the snow. Day 4: a morning's skiing, then Tbilisi. Day 5: Sighnaghi, Bodbe and the new vintage by a cellar fire, then ~100 km to the airport.

Recent seasons ran from 20-27 December to mid-April; the 2026/27 dates were not out by 18 October 2026. Winter tyres are compulsory on listed mountain roads from 1 December to 1 March. For a full week on skis, see our Ski Week in Gudauri.

Shorter or longer trips

  • Three days: the 3-day Georgia itinerary keeps one Tbilisi hotel and visits Kazbegi and Sighnaghi as day trips.
  • Seven days: our 7-day itinerary adds Uplistsikhe, a second Kazbegi night for the Truso valley and more time in Kakheti.
  • Ten days: the 10-day Georgia itinerary keeps Tbilisi, Kakheti and Kazbegi and adds Kutaisi, three nights in Svaneti and Batumi.
  • Two weeks: the 14-day Georgia itinerary runs one way from Tbilisi to Batumi through Vardzia, Kutaisi and Svaneti.

Getting around on a Georgia 5 day trip, with 2026 costs

A car does most of the work here: Jvari, Ananuri, the Friendship Monument, Bodbe and the cellars all lie between towns, where minibuses do not stop.

Four driving days with a private car come to roughly 800-1,800 GEL ($310-690) per vehicle, plus the driver's two nights away; by minibus and shared jeep, about 100-150 GEL per person. With beds, meals and tickets, budget about 500-850 GEL ($200-325) per person as a backpacker, 1,250-2,250 GEL ($475-875) mid-range and 3,000-5,250 GEL ($1,150-2,000) with a driver-guide. Our travel budget guide has the detail.

Agree the stops in writingSend the driver your list of stops the evening before and confirm the total, the waiting time and the cost of any detour.

Where to stay in 5 days: the best areas at each stop

A double in a good guesthouse or 3-star hotel costs roughly 90-150 GEL in Tbilisi, 100-180 GEL in Stepantsminda and 80-150 GEL in Sighnaghi (2026). Book the Kazbegi night first: it sells out soonest.

  1. Tbilisi, Days 1 and 3
One hotel for both nights. Sololaki and the Old Town are close to every Day 1 sight but steep and noisy at night; Vera is calmer; Avlabari, by Sameba, faces the old town and is nearer the airport road.
  2. Stepantsminda, Day 2
The centre has cash machines, cafes and the 4x4 stand; Gergeti village, across the Tergi, is where the church path starts, with Kazbek in the window; Sno and Arsha are quieter and near the Juta turning.
  3. Kakheti, Day 4
A family guesthouse with its own marani in Sighnaghi puts dinner a few steps from bed. Telavi suits the reversed version; wine estates near Tsinandali and Kvareli are the comfort choice.
  4. Kutaisi and Mestia, for the other plans
Kutaisi: central streets near the Green Bazaar and the White Bridge. Mestia: near Seti Square, where shared jeeps leave for Ushguli in the morning.
  5. Gudauri, in winter
Near a lift or ski-in; cheaper apartments lower down are linked by shuttles.

5 days in Georgia: frequently asked questions

Is 5 days enough for Georgia?

Yes, for one half of the country. In five days you can see Tbilisi, Mtskheta, Kazbegi and Kakheti, sleeping one night in the mountains and one among the vineyards. Adding the west, Svaneti or Tusheti would put you in a car for much of the trip.

Can I see Tbilisi, Kazbegi and Batumi in 5 days?

Only by rushing. Batumi sits ~370 km west of Tbilisi (the quickest trains need about 4 hours), while Kazbegi lies north. For the sea, fly into Batumi or Kutaisi, leave from Tbilisi and drop Kazbegi or Kakheti.

Can you do Georgia in 5 days without a car?

Yes. Minibuses from Didube reach Stepantsminda in about 3 hours for roughly 15-20 GEL, and from the Navtlughi stop by Samgori metro reach Sighnaghi in about 2 hours for around 15 GEL (2026). They skip the sights in between, so hire a driver at least for the Military Road day.

How much does a Georgia 5 day trip cost?

Before flights, a mid-range traveller spends about 1,250-2,250 GEL (about $475-875) per person in 2026. Backpackers manage on 500-850 GEL (about $200-325), and boutique hotels with a driver-guide push it to 3,000-5,250 GEL (about $1,150-2,000). Sharing a car between three or four people cuts transport costs sharply.

Which airport is better for 5 days in Georgia, Tbilisi or Kutaisi?

Tbilisi, for the east plan. Kutaisi, the low-cost airport, is better for the west, for Svaneti by road, or as the arrival point of an open-jaw trip that leaves from Tbilisi.

What is the best month for a 5-day trip to Georgia?

May, June, September and October. The Juta valley is usually open from June to early October, the harvest falls in September and October, and Tbilisi is not too hot. July and August suit the mountains but bake the city.

Can I add Svaneti to 5 days in Georgia?

Not to the east plan. Make Svaneti the whole trip: fly from Natakhtari to Mestia when the weather allows, or drive ~240 km from Kutaisi airport. Ten days lets you combine it with Tbilisi, Kazbegi and Kakheti.
