Two very different neighbours meet on this route. Azerbaijan, on the Caspian Sea, is mostly Muslim and Turkic-speaking, wealthy from oil, and keeps a medieval walled town at the heart of its modern capital, Baku. Georgia, by contrast, is Orthodox Christian and mountainous, and the world knows it for wine. Your first four days are in Azerbaijan, taking in Baku's Old City, the Stone Age petroglyphs of Gobustan, the Ateshgah fire temple and the Khan's Palace in Sheki. After that, Georgia takes over with Kakheti, Tbilisi and the drive up the Georgian Military Highway to Kazbegi.

Azerbaijan has not let travellers in by land since 2020, but foreigners have generally been able to exit overland into Georgia. That is why the route starts in Baku and leaves the country at the Balakan–Lagodekhi crossing. We double-check the rules before you set off; should the crossing be shut, you take the one-hour Baku–Tbilisi flight instead. Most visitors need an e-visa for Azerbaijan, whereas Georgia is visa-free for many nationalities.

Baku's seafront, much of the Old City and central Tbilisi are fairly flat and reachable by car. Gobustan, the Sheki palace, Sighnaghi's walls and Gergeti all involve steps or uneven ground; your guide can suggest viewing points from the vehicle instead.

Day by day

01Baku: arrival and the Caspian seafrontOvernight: Baku

A driver meets you at Baku airport and drives you to your central hotel. Later, as evening falls, your guide takes you along Baku Boulevard, a seafront park that curves for kilometres around the bay of the Caspian Sea. Carry on to Fountain Square and the pedestrian streets near Nizami Street, where mansions from the first oil boom of the 19th century line the way. Dinner introduces Azerbaijani food: plov, kebabs and qutab, thin pancakes stuffed with herbs or meat.

02Icherisheher and Zaha Hadid's Heydar Aliyev CenterOvernight: Baku

Your morning is spent in Icherisheher, the walled Old City of Baku, which UNESCO lists together with the Maiden Tower, a stone tower of the 12th century whose original purpose is still argued over, and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, built in the 15th century, whose grounds hold a mosque, tombs and a bathhouse. Wander lanes lined with caravanserais, carpet shops and mosques. After lunch, see the Heydar Aliyev Center, the sweeping white building designed by Zaha Hadid. As the sun sets, take the funicular up to Highland Park to look out across the bay to the three Flame Towers glowing after dark.

03Rock art, mud volcanoes and burning hillsidesOvernight: Baku

About an hour's drive south of Baku is Gobustan, where UNESCO protects more than 6,000 Stone Age engravings of hunters, boats, dancers and animals; its museum shows how they were made. Close by, local drivers bump along dirt tracks to a patch of small mud volcanoes oozing cold grey mud. In the afternoon, out on the Absheron peninsula, visit Ateshgah, a fire temple where Hindu and Zoroastrian worshippers prayed in the 17th and 18th centuries. The day ends at Yanar Dag, a slope where escaping natural gas has kept burning for decades.

04West through Shamakhi to ShekiOvernight: Sheki

Leave Baku behind and head west toward the Greater Caucasus, climbing into its foothills. Shamakhi, once the capital of the Shirvan khans, has the Juma Mosque, first raised in the 8th century and repeatedly rebuilt following earthquakes, and the Yeddi Gumbaz, a cluster of domed tombs belonging to the khans. The road then winds on through green valleys and past hazelnut orchards to Sheki, a little town of red-tiled roofs on the hillside. You stay overnight in Sheki and eat piti for dinner, a stew of lamb and chickpeas baked in a clay pot.

05The Khan's Palace, the border and SighnaghiOvernight: Sighnaghi

Start at the Khan's Palace, an 18th-century residence of the rulers of Sheki. Its walls are painted with hunting scenes, and its windows are assembled from thousands of pieces of coloured glass held in place without glue or nails. Afterwards, look round the old caravanserai, then drive to the village of Kish for its Albanian church. Next comes the drive to the Balakan–Lagodekhi frontier, where your Georgian team is waiting on the far side, and you continue into Kakheti to Sighnaghi, a hilltop town inside 18th-century walls. A welcome dinner brings your first glass of Georgian wine.

06Kakheti: St Nino's grave, a qvevri lunch and TsinandaliOvernight: Tbilisi

Your day opens at Bodbe Monastery, which holds the tomb of St Nino, the woman credited with bringing Christianity to Georgia. A walk on part of Sighnaghi's walls follows, with the Alazani Valley and the Caucasus spread out ahead. For lunch you join a family of winemakers who make their wine in qvevri, clay jars sunk into the cellar floor, a method UNESCO has recognised; the glasses hold amber Rkatsiteli and red Saperavi. Later, at Tsinandali, you tour the estate where the poet Alexander Chavchavadze lived, before crossing the mountains to Tbilisi.

07A day on foot in TbilisiOvernight: Tbilisi

Explore Tbilisi on foot today. Metekhi Church, high on the riverbank, is the starting point; from there the cable car lifts you to Narikala Fortress and its view across the Old Town. On the way down you pass the Leghvtakhevi waterfall and the domed roofs of the Abanotubani sulphur baths, continuing to Sioni Cathedral and the Anchiskhati Basilica. In the afternoon you see the gold treasury of the Georgian National Museum, then stroll over the Bridge of Peace. Your evening could end with a long, hot soak in a private bathhouse room.

08From Mtskheta up to StepantsmindaOvernight: Stepantsminda

Start in Mtskheta, the ancient capital of Kartli, with Jvari Monastery and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. The Georgian Military Highway then carries you north, past Ananuri Fortress on the Zhinvali Reservoir, up beyond Gudauri to the Friendship Monument, then across the Jvari Pass (2,379 m). In Stepantsminda you board a 4x4 that climbs to Gergeti Trinity Church, standing at 2,170 m below Mount Kazbek, whose summit reaches 5,054 m. Keen walkers can skip the car and hike the old trail up from the village in roughly ninety minutes. You spend the night in Stepantsminda after dinner.

09Gveleti Waterfall, a khinkali lunch and departure

Your last morning takes you into the Dariali Gorge, where a path of roughly half an hour leads up to the Gveleti Waterfall, pouring through a narrow slot in the granite. Then turn south again over the Jvari Pass and stop in Pasanauri for a goodbye lunch of khinkali, the dish the village is best known for. You arrive in Tbilisi in the afternoon in time for your flight. If you would rather not rush, add one more night in Tbilisi and spend the evening at a wine bar or soaking in a private bath at Abanotubani.

Good to know

Who it's for

  • Travellers curious about the contrast between Muslim, Caspian Azerbaijan and Christian, mountainous Georgia
  • Architecture fans who want Baku's Old City, Zaha Hadid's building and Sheki's painted palace on one trip
  • Wine and food lovers who want plov and piti one week and qvevri wine the next
  • Visitors comfortable with a border crossing on foot and a route that depends on current border rules

If you would rather not deal with e-visas or border uncertainty, choose Classic Georgia and stay in one country.

What to bring

  • Your Azerbaijan e-visa on paper, in addition to the PDF on your phone
  • A passport valid for at least six months beyond your trip
  • Modest clothes and a headscarf for mosques in Azerbaijan and churches in Georgia
  • A light windproof jacket for Baku, which is known for strong winds off the Caspian
  • A warm layer for Stepantsminda and the Jvari Pass
  • Some Azerbaijani manat for small purchases, since lari are not accepted there
Please note
  • The Balakan–Lagodekhi crossing is done on foot with your luggage. If the land exit is not possible on your dates, you fly from Baku to Tbilisi and the Sheki day changes.
  • Azerbaijan may deny entry to travellers who have visited the Karabakh region without its permission. Ask us if this applies to you.
  • Health insurance became compulsory for visitors to Georgia on 1 January 2026, so buy cover that runs from Baku all the way to Tbilisi.
  • July and August are very hot in Baku and Kakheti, so we do not run this tour in those months.
Borders and visasAzerbaijan expects most Western visitors to arrive with an electronic visa, requested on the government's ASAN e-visa site and usually granted in a few working days. Azerbaijan has kept its land borders closed to entry since 2020, while foreigners have generally been allowed to leave overland; the closure has been extended in steps, most recently reported to 1 October 2026. On the Georgian side, many nationalities, among them EU, UK and US citizens, need no visa. Rules can change at short notice, so check with your embassy and the official Azerbaijani sources before you travel. Read the border guide →

Questions about this tour

Is the land border between Azerbaijan and Georgia open?

Since 2020 Azerbaijan has not allowed entry over its land borders, though foreign travellers have usually been permitted to leave by road into Georgia. For this reason the tour goes from Baku to Tbilisi rather than the other way. We confirm the current rules before you travel and change to a flight if necessary.

Do I need a visa for Azerbaijan?

Most nationalities do. You apply online for an e-visa through the official ASAN portal, and it is normally issued within a few working days. Holders of EU, British and US passports, among many others, can enter Georgia visa-free.

Can I visit Armenia on the same trip?

Yes. Armenia shares a border with Georgia and is simple to add from Tbilisi. However, the Azerbaijan–Armenia border is closed, so you cannot travel directly between the two. Our three-country tour covers all three, travelling in the order Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia.

Is Azerbaijan conservative for visitors?

Baku feels cosmopolitan and easy-going, whereas smaller towns such as Sheki keep more traditional ways. In mosques, dress modestly and women should cover their hair, and always ask before taking photos of people.
